A message from Elijah Wood on the enduring quality of LOTR.
I have made some memes to commemorate the day

Hey folks, I’m in a pretty deep hole with an emergency vet bill. Thankfully my sweet cat (who has served as my pfp for years) is going to be fine, but my bank account is a different story. If anyone wants to help out, here’s my GoFundMe:
Hi! I’m Hannah and I just got hit upside the head with a crazy emergency vet bill. My sweet… Hannah R needs your support for Aid Sir Catrick
The Ring: If I had a quarter for every time a hobbit picked me up, I’d have two quarters. The Ring: Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Of all the bearers of Sauron’s ring, 4 of them were hobbits.
I was wrong. It’s 5. Not 4
The lineage of ring bearers is as follows.
Sauron.
Isildur
Deagol
Sméagol
Bilbo
Frodo
Samwise
I love how Deagol counts as a ring bearer even though he had it in his possession for all of like five seconds
He held it for the rest of of his life!
[Image description: Tweet by @banalplay saying “but something happened then that the ring did not intend. it was picked up by the most unlikely creature imaginable: a hobbit, the same fuckin thing that just had it for like 500 years.” End Image Description.] Link to original here. Otherwise reblogging for the final rb there, which made me cackle.
From the ring’s perspective:
1. Home, the finger of my creator and other self.
2. Well, I don’t like it but I can work with this. Cause some trouble, get some revenge, find my way home, this is fine.
3. What the fuck is you?
4. Right personality, wrong species, I don’t know what you are but I hate you and I don’t know why you’re so resistant to my powers.
5. NO NO NO there are goblins everywhere how did I find another one of THESE horrible things. This one’s even more resistant than the last one and also disgustingly nice. I suffer.
6. Listen, I’ll cooperate, just get me the fuck out of this hellhole full of small cheerful people my power doesn’t work on properly. No, not like that. I hate you. Please stop.
7. FUCK
8. (Frodo again) I still hate you with every molecule of my mortal form but at least you’re not number seven. Think I’m starting to get through finally.
9. (Smeagol again) YES it’s you I actually missed you now get me back to the Master and NO FUCK NO I HATE YOOOOUUUUU…. *fzt*
you CHAIN The One Ring?! you chain it like the prisoner?! oh! OH! trauma! deep psychological trauma for hobbits for One Thousand Years!
Eowyn/Faramir was one of the first ships I was truly obsessed with, and am still obsessed with. Faramir has lived the past year of his life in the shadow of the Nazgul, burdened by grief, fighting a desperate war that knows he's going to lose, hating that he has to fight at all but still doing it to protect his men (many of whom will die anyway), to obey his father (who doesn't love him), to defend his city (which is probably doomed.) He bears up heroically under his burden, he doesn't have illusions, he tolerates hopelessness so well that he's not even tempted by the ring: if no actions can avert the inevitable destruction, he might as well act righteously. He holds up under the burden, and he holds others upright as well, but it's sickening him, and the sickening dread that he fights every day has a voice and shape, black wings in the sky.
And then Eowyn shows up having killed one of those.
Conversely:
Eowyn's narrative asks a question.
We first meet her as someone reaching for something her society has told her is the highest ideal, and not for her. She defies her uncle and her King to fight in his name and win glory on the battlefield; and she performs one of the greatest feats of arms we see on the page in slaying the Witch-King, but in so doing, we see her lose the man who was like a father to her and face the pain and loss that is the true face of war.
She's earned glory as much as any child of Rohan, but it's hard to want it in the same way when you've seen what it costs; so what does that victory mean, if it's going to be too painful to treat it as a trophy?
An entire book ago, someone answered that question - someone articulated a reason to honour a warrior without glorifying war.
“I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend."

Tolkien writing male characters' moral decay and eventual decline: he stopped listening to his wife
“Boromir apologist” he doesn’t have anything to apologize for????? He fell victim to evil ringTM like once. and then immediately redeemed himself. Guys come on.
Not to be autistic on main but the valar putting the moon and then later the sun in the sky after the elves have walked under starlight for eons??? Wtf man. That's like the ultimate turning the main light on without asking after everyone's gotten used to ambient fairy lights. On a *cosmic* level. If I were an elf I would not stand for that shit personally.
I love the concept of Tooks. "Everybody in the Shire is very very businesslike and respectable and has no use for adventures except for this one entire family of mad lads who also run the municipal government"
The decision by the kings of Arnor to name the Tooks rightful thanes of the Shire was actually a 3000-IQ play by the Witch-King of Angmar to keep the Tooks far the fuck away from him
Ya gotta get 'em from where they'll least expected it
Hi I’d like to talk to @alotofmomos - I just want to talk
Part: 186/?
absolutely flabbergasting to see people who have so enthusiastically succumbed to despair. like okay denethor, but some of us are gonna actually face the armies of mordor in battle nonetheless.
It’s easy to forget JRR Tolkien was a fairly prolific academic translator with an interest in early medieval literature and philology. It’s so inspiring that he found time to write The Hobbit while fighting for his life over Beowulf.
JRR Tolkien’s introductory notes for Sir Gawain and the Green Knight are like “This is a superb little poem. I really enjoy the author’s ability to weave existing narratives within folklore into one cohesive tale. This was fun!” and his lectures and notes on Beowulf are lowkey like “Translating and analyzing this was my Waterloo. I have been looking at it for 40 years. I am Sisyphus and this poem is my burden. All of you are misinterpreting it. Me too probably. God help us all.”
i am not immune to Character Who Has Been Called from the Start to do an Act of Good that They Will Not Survive.

J. R. R. Tolkien: no, my books aren't about the war I experienced. It's just a story
J. R. R. Tolkien's works: you cannot go home, war ends entire bloodlines, you are mourning the death of your brother alone, you dug into the earth and permanently scored the land, you cannot explain what you have been through, you cannot go home, "that wound will never fully heal. He will carry it the rest of his life", leaving the women behind does not save them, the young die first, you cannot go home, the parent will bury their child, you have lost the wives and you will never connect with them again, "how shall any tower withstand such numbers and such reckless hate?", you are not the same, you cannot go home, you can never go home, your father will only side with those he sees as worthy bloodlines and you cannot change his mind, it is more meaningful Not to kill, sometimes your sacrifice accomplishes nothing, you cannot go home
I’m rereading LOTR for the first time since I was a kid, and I have so many thoughts…
First off, I get why PJ cut the Crickhollow plotline in the film but the context is so funny 😭
Merry in the movie: “Heehee we got caught stealing from Farmer Maggot and now we’re going with you, I guess!”
Merry in the book: “We know everything. I found out about the Ring by reading Bilbo’s secret documents and Sam has been spying on you for months. We’re coming with you into darkness and danger whether you like it or not.”
