new project I’m working on
Researcher 4438 — Full Character & Story Summary
Premise:
A trans man named only by his research designation, Researcher 4438, becomes trapped inside an endless beach resort similar in feeling to the Backrooms. He was part of a scientific research team investigating the impossible environment, but the resort separated him from the others and left him stranded.
The resort is beautiful, endless, and deeply wrong:
Infinite hotel rooms and beaches
Perfect vacation aesthetics with impossible architecture
Environmental anomalies that can alter reality
Weather changes that make no sense
Rooms that appear when needed but never quite work normally
The danger is not constant violence.
The danger is that reality itself is unreliable.
4438 is a scientist first.
He refers to himself only by his designation because that is what he was assigned during the mission.
To the entities, however, 4438 becomes his name.
They do not actually understand human numbers. Their symbols and sounds are only vaguely similar to “4438,” like how humans write animal noises as meow, bark, or yip.
Their symbol for him likely means something closer to:
“The small yellow traveler who arrived from elsewhere.”
When 4438 enters the resort, he refuses to remove his yellow hazmat suit.
Not because he knows the environment is dangerous.
Because he doesn't know it isn't.
unknown environmental effects
Eventually, the suit fails.
The air stops flowing into it.
4438 is forced to remove his helmet because he is suffocating.
That is how he discovers:
The entities are fascinated because they initially think the suit is his body.
Their understanding goes through several stages:
The yellow hazmat suit is his exoskeleton
The helmet is the only detachable part
His normal clothes are his skin
Humans have removable coverings that are not part of them
4438 has to painstakingly explain:
Humans become even more confusing to them because humans can create artificial protection and wear it voluntarily.
The entities are all one species but have wildly different appearances.
Missing normal facial features
Deeply uncanny-valley inducing
Roughly velociraptor-sized
Expressive through body language
Despite their appearances, they are not naturally hostile.
At first, they treat 4438 like an unknown endangered animal.
Their observations are something like:
Small.
Soft.
Strange.
Yellow shell.
Makes noises.
Drinks bitter liquid.
Needs assistance.
They do not understand that he is intelligent at first.
4438 brought three boxes of instant coffee packets.
He expected a research mission.
He did not expect months trapped in another reality.
He runs out after the first month.
Coffee = functional 4438.
So they attempt to recreate coffee.
4438’s biggest survival problem is not always the anomalies.
“I have been trapped in an impossible dimension and I need caffeine.”
The Entities Learning Human Emotion
The entities recognize fear perfectly.
They understand it instinctively.
One day they surround 4438 because they want to observe an emotion they understand.
They are not trying to hurt him.
They simply do not understand that surrounding someone can create fear.
They just lack human social context.
He uses breathing techniques to calm himself and chooses communication instead of panic.
This becomes a turning point.
The first time an entity touches 4438, it looks almost like it was dared.
Slowly touches his hazmat suit.
4438 does not react negatively.
The entity touches him again.
4438 eventually touches it back.
To the entities, this is enormous.
The “small yellow creature” acknowledged them.
They begin seeking more interaction.
4438 and the Entities Becoming Friends
The entities start leaving him:
4438 initially thinks this is just resource behavior.
They just communicate differently.
One night, the resort becomes freezing cold.
4438 cannot maintain his body temperature and curls up to conserve heat.
Their species already sleeps in piles for warmth.
They carefully pick him up and bring him into their sleeping pile.
This is the moment they realize how different humans are.
They already knew he was small.
But holding him makes them understand:
He is tiny compared to them.
They begin treating him almost like humans treat a tiny animal:
Not because they think he is useless.
He is a small creature they care about.
Human Instincts They Discover
The entities are fascinated by human behavior.
Especially when 4438 sleeps.
They discover humans have comfort behaviors:
rubbing limbs together for friction
rocking themselves for comfort
nuzzling into safe spaces
4438 unknowingly does these while asleep.
The entities recognize this because younger members of their species do similar things.
The researcher is not just intelligent.
He is also an animal with instincts.
They think 4438 has no hair.
They think he only has head hair.
They discover humans are covered in tiny sensory hairs.
some areas grow more densely
Humans are weird to them because we have:
constantly changing external features
Body Modification & Scars
The entities understand scars.
They notice horizontal scars on 4438’s chest.
He voluntarily changed his body.
This introduces them to a new human concept:
They learn humans can intentionally change themselves.
Not because they are damaged.
The body is not always something a person simply has.
Sometimes it is something a person chooses.
4438’s biggest long-term problem is that he has no access to his hormone therapy.
Before the mission, he used HRT and medication to maintain the body he felt comfortable in.
He brought enough supplies expecting a normal research mission.
He did not expect to be trapped for months.
Without access, his body begins changing away from the state he had chosen.
This is one of the hardest things for him to explain.
“My body is changing.”
“I changed it before.”
“I want it to stay changed.”
The entities do not fully understand the biology.
But they understand one thing:
4438 is distressed because something important to him is changing.
4438 studying an unknown environment.
An unknown environment studying 4438.
The entities begin by seeing him as:
Strange little yellow creature.
They never fully understand humans.
But they learn that 4438 is not just a specimen.
And 4438 learns that the terrifying creatures of the endless beach resort are not monsters.
They are just another species trying, in their own impossible way, to say:
“You are small. You are strange. You are confusing. But you belong with us.”
