“Infinium...” It echoed through my head. Another element to the list. Something about it sent a shiver down my spine. I knew all the possible elements, natural and created. I knew their names in the tongues of all civilisations. I knew how each one felt. The natural elements were sweet, warm, easily moulded under my hands. The created ones were bitter and cold, they made me sick. They scratched at my bones and burnt like acid through my veins. But this. Infinium... It consumed me. Crushed me in a vice so tight I felt like I might collapse inwards. I was drowning, I was sure of it. My fingers twitched for it, to bend it into something, but I couldn’t. My body refused to move, my mind refused to form the command. With each passing second I wanted to scream. For control, for relief... For an escape from its unyielding grip. Then it ended and I was starring into familiar electric blue eyes. Slender hands rested on my shoulders.
“Dart’e...”
The other god searched my face. “Are you alright?”
His words sounded like we were under water. I shook my head to rid the feeling.
“I’m fine...”
He looked me over once more before smiling. “If you say so.”
=====================
I watched quietly as Khonsu moved the moon further through the sky, orbiting the Earth in its endless cycle. Dart’e sat beside me silently. Lost in the stream of his ever growing knowledge, for if the people knew it, then so too would he. I turned my own gaze to the stars. Staring at the empty void between them I felt the slow constricting of my body. Darkness crept into my vision until I could see nothing. I wasn’t sure if I cried out when something began to crush my core. I could feel something firm under my hand but my mind couldn’t place it. I know I sobbed then, as the sensation grew and my body began to burn. Then suddenly it ended and I was curled against Dart’e’s chest, crying into the bright green dress shirt he liked to wear. I slowly raised my head. Khonsu stood staring at me, his eyes filled with fear, worry, confusion. He looked to the sky. I followed his gaze. The stars were different. Some had gone out. Others had been moved. I had no explanation when Asteria and Urania demanded to know what I had done with them.
===============
Sometimes we enjoyed travelling the human world. There was so much to see and so much to do. I smiled politely and hummed as Electra excitedly pointed out a new type of device in a window. I closed my eyes and sighed, a dull ache in the base of my skull.
“PERI!”
I looked to the goddess. She narrowed neon green eyes at me.
“Are you even listening?”
“Of course...” I reached up and rubbed at my neck, trying to ease the feeling.
Suddenly it was too bright. I blinked against it, clenching my eyes against the tiny explosions of light. My stomach churned. I clamped one hand over my mouth and reached out to Electra with the other. My legs gave out then. She lowered me to the pavement and knelt beside me, hands hovering but not knowing where to touch.
“What’s wrong?”
I tried to talk, to answer that I wasn’t sure. That I didn’t know. When I moved my hand and opened my mouth I retched. Molten metal dripped from my mouth and pooled before me.
==============================
I lay staring up at the stars, tracing their new patterns with my eyes. I tried to ignore the raised voices outside the room.
“HE’S GROWN UNSTABLE! ARE WE SUPPOSED TO WAIT UNTIL HE KILLS ONE OF US?” Asteria demanded.
Dart’e’s voice was quieter. It dripped with venom as he spoke.
“Are you suggesting we kill him?”
“If we need to.” Urania confirmed. “Better him than the rest of us. Better him than the universe.”
“You ca...”
Electra’s voice faded away as my head began to ache. The constricting sensation set in once again. I tried to call for the others. I wasn’t sure if I made any noise. I didn’t truly need to breath, but as the vice grew tighter, I struggled to take in air. I wasn’t aware of moving, but my hands found their way into my hair. I gripped the strands, nails digging into my scalp as I screamed. It echoed around me, infinite and silent. I rolled onto my side and curled tightly into myself. The crushing feeling engulfed my core and I clenched my eyes against the darkness. Light exploded behind my lids. Time didn’t exist then. It was as though everything stopped. It started again when gentle hands pried my own from my hair and pulled me against a familiar green clad chest.
