repeatedly severing a person's mind was meant to get you further and further from your outie self to the point where you are literally just a blank slate? but Gemma doesn't want to be disconnected from her life she longs to see her husband and their home and get back to their life together. she tries to escape. her innies are longing for something someone and the love is transcending severance. that's why she goes with mark during cold harbor, even when she's suppose to be the most separated from her true self and the overhead voice tells her not to trust that man. but she does trust that man. her innies cannot be separated from the love she has for her life on the outside.

but mark s... mark s is everything lumon wanted out of gemma's repeated severance. and he was only severed once. but mark created mark s with a purpose, mark s was meant to forget all of his attachments and love and grief and longings. that's why he turns away from gemma instead of going with her while she begs for him to turn around.

now... what could lumon do if they severed him again? and again? and again? what if mark was the next cold harbor? he already has a group of people who love him and can perform the data refinement. Irving B, Dylan G, and Helly R. and if Gemma even attempts to save her husband they'll have her too.

My dad read me stuff like the lord of the rings and the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and Sherlock Holmes as bedtime stories when I was a kid and I dunno what sort of effect that had on my development but whatever it did I think I’m making it everyone else’s problem

Reading chapter books one chapter a night to his kids was I think also an excuse for my dad to read some books he’d never gotten around to reading by himself. Did he know how sexual the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series can possibly get? No. We learned that together as a family.
