Daylight - Harry Styles
If I was a bluebird I would fly to you / You be the spoon, dip you in honey so I could be stickin to you / Daylight
zarasafin:
Giggling as they untangled, quietly debating which One Direction boy Blue resembled the most, Zara’s hand slid from his cheek and lazily smoothed down the collar of his shirt. This was one of her favourites of his, but she always loved the way Blue dressed. Between the two of them, they didn’t have much interest following trends or falling in with what was particularly popular; they simply liked what they liked, loved what they loved, and didn’t have a care in the world for how others perceived those quirks.
“Hmmm, Niall,” Zara’s voice was low as she contemplated the soft blond, conjuring him up in her mind. After a suitable pause, she shook her head. “Nope, pretty sure Lottie hates that guy. Didn’t Hailee Steinfeld write a song about him? Lottie loves her. Thinks she’s really hot!”
As she smiled up at her best friend, the tips of her toes pressed to the ground, Zara became all too aware of all of the envious eyes on her. This was how it had always been, being best friends with Blue. She knew he was handsome — sexy, even — and that women loathed the way the two of them clung to each other, always assuming that Zara was his girlfriend. Of course, that wasn’t the case, but she wasn’t going to correct them if Blue wasn’t interested.
“You’re gonna be the best dad in the world, y’know?” she agreed, nodding absently before bringing her gaze back to his smiling face.
Zara loved kids, and she knew Blue did too. They’d discussed it so often in the past, how many kids they’d each have, how they’d grow up together just the same as the two of them had. Looking at the dazed, dreamy look on her best friends face, she couldn’t help but wonder if the time would come soon rather than later for him.
“Did you see the little girl with the Princess Leia buns? She was right in front of me, the sweetest face in the world! She looked almost like if you mixed the two of us up and made a baby!” Zara laughed, clapping delightedly at the memory of the child.
The lazy way Zara always found a way to touch Blue made him light up, her fingers tugging at his collar. It was rare not to find the two all tangled up in each other. They were always finding ways to link arms, bump hips, lips brushing lips or Blue tugging at the hem of her dress as they stumbled home together. Wherever Zara went, Blue followed, and vice versa.
“Well, I’ll never bring it up again in Lottie’s presence.” Blue giggled, trying to keep his voice sincere as he promised. Lottie had become a really good friend to Zara, and he supposed, to himself. The first time he’d met Lottie he’d been wildly jealous of her, of Zara’s obvious attraction to her, but it was hard not to become quickly enamoured by her chaos. And with Lottie, came Alex, her much gentler other half, who calmed her down but more often than not, indulged her. He liked them both a lot.
Blue’s book tucked under his armpit for safekeeping, his free hand came up to tuck a wayward strand of hair behind her ear. He beamed - “so I can see your pretty face” - his fingers brushing her cheek lightly. To an outsider, they looked like a young couple, very much in love. Inside their bubble, Blue remained painfully oblivious.
“I hope so!” Blue said, thinking of how his Mums had always told him to slow down. But Blue wanted to experience everything fast and sooner rather than later, publishing and babies and travelling the world, all at the tender age of twenty seven. He’d always thought if he wanted to live, he better start doing it now. Adding a kid or two wouldn’t slow him down, he wanted them to have adventures, too.
Blue gasped excitedly at the memory, nodding along with her, his nose practically brushing her own at the lack of distance between them.
“She sooo did! You know what? We would have really cute babies.” he smirked at the thought, imagining a little girl with Zara’s eyes, his nose. “And they’d be so stylish, just like their Mama. And we could name her like, Kenobi. Or Rainbow. Unless we have a boy. Although, Kenobi works for any gender.”
zarasafin:
When Blue had asked Zara to come along today, it had felt like a no brained. A harsher person might have laughed, teased him even, for even doubting that she would be there. Not Zara, though. Zara only beamed across at him, heart bursting with pride and the sheer notion that her best friend would want her there. She rarely left his side in the 27 years that they’d been best friends, but she’d still been so earnest in her reassurance, wanting Blue to know with complete certainty that he had her support.
She loved listening to the animated way in which he shared his story, seamlessly tapping into each character and personality, each voice and accent spilling from his lips as though it were his own natural cadence. Zara had chosen to stand at the back of the room, wanting all of the focus to be on Blue and his work, no distractions, but also because she’d wanted desperately to observe. She loved watching the tiny faces light up around her — an impact that Blue appeared to have on people of all ages — and found her chest ache for the youthful innocence that surrounded her. Children bounced on the spot, hands clapping together clumsily in celebrating, some of them even tugging at the hem of Blue’s trousers as he passed them by, desperate for his attention, for a smile.
Zara understood that feeling all too well, even after so long. It was a smile she’d spend her whole life losing herself in.
“Hey there, rockstar,” Zara beamed, immediately wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
A warmth spread in her chest, as it always did when Blue held her, and she instinctively buried her face against his neck, breathing him for a moment before pulling back.
“You were amazing, Bluebird!” she exclaimed, drawing a hand up to cup his cheek. “I actually think I might have some competition for your biggest fan these days, all those mums were looking at you the way you look at Harry Styles!”
With a quick peck to his cheek, she insisted, “I am so proud of you!”
Blue didn’t hesitate to pull Zara into an enthusiastic hug the moment she wrapped her arms around him. Her long hair tickling his nose as his thumb lightly brushed the small of her back, Blue even allowed himself to close his eyes for a moment, as though he could draw out the hug. He knew every inch of Zara so well, the smattering of freckles on her shoulder, what each quirk of her lips meant, and the circle of her arms. He gave her one last squeeze before she drew back.
“Oh, stop!” Blue blushed under her congratulatory gaze, his hands resting on her hips. Blue couldn’t have wriggled away even if he had wanted to. “I’m no Harry Styles.”
As Blue and Zara disentangled themselves from one another, he smoothed a hand down the front of his shirt. It was one of his gaudier shirt choices - a blue bowling shirt patterned with cartoon whales, probably Blue’s favourite animal. It tended to go over well with the kids, but women often looked over it with a mocking eye. It didn’t matter though, Zara always said he looked especially handsome in it.
He looked around, eyes landing on one of the Mums in attendance. She seemed to be taking a particularly long time to zip her daughter’s coat up, casting furtive glances at the two of them every now and again. Blue smiled bashfully, looking away.
“Maybe I’m not Harry Styles, but I guess I could be like, Niall Horan.” he murmured to Zara, catching her hand in his. Pledging his allegiance. The Mum was pretty, but he had plans with Zara, so he’d be leaving with Zara.
Swinging their hands between them, he inclined his body towards Zara, turning his back on the little reading area, and the woman he’d noticed.
“Weren’t all the babies so cute?” he cooed, starry eyed. “I’m gonna have like, ten, one day.”
It was mid-morning, the sun streaming in through a row of windows, casting light on bookshelves and paper streamers, and a dozen tiny faces peered up at Blue. All with sticky fingers and runny noses and wide, carefree smiles, parents huddled together, feet treading the edge of a multi-coloured carpet. All staring at him, some with amusement, others with confusion, wondering who this daft young man was. Too young to have published a book, surely. Younger than them, baby-faced and bright eyed. But here he was, book aloft, gesticulating wildly for the entertainment of toddlers, his voice sweet and lilting for some characters, low and gruff for others, chest swelling with pride when the group laughed in unison.
“And as the children, tucked into beds so neatly, tired from the day’s adventure, the birds sang their goodnight tune ever so sweetly.” Blue finished, and was met with a crescendo of pudgy hands clapping together. A dark-haired little girl in the back, mouth open and drooling, was startled awake. Parents performed muted little claps in the back, as though afraid to disobey the rules and puncture through the silence of the library.
Blue beamed, running a hand through his floppy hair, offering up a smile for everyone in attendance. As he lifted his head above the row of toddlers, to the place where he knew she’d be, the place where he felt intrinsically drawn, he offered Zara the biggest smile of all.
Children were scooped up into awaiting arms, and as they smiled and chirped their cursory ‘thank you!’’s after being much prodded from parents, Blue felt a pin-prick of longing in his chest, just a little. Blue knew he was young, but that still didn’t stop him from wanting.
He made his way through the crowd, clutching his book, to where Zara was waiting. His face immediately split into a wide smile, although he’d only been at her side a mere half an hour ago. It felt like too long.
“Hello again,” Blue greeted her, his free hand immediately seizing her waist. “Did you like it?”
Zara had heard And The Birds Sang Sweetly a million times, no doubt, but her opinion was still the only one that mattered.
