a/n: did you miss me? (donโt answer that). so beyond happy to be writing again! this will likely be my last time writing for anime characters so letโs make it a good one! go easy on me, this is my first real post in about 3 years :) shoutout to everyone who begged me for a part 2!
โAny further questions?โ Your boss asked. You looked around at the various video chat screens before you, everyone shaking their heads and ready log off.
โWell if thatโs it, hope you all have a great weekend-โ
You slammed the screen of your computer shut before your boss could get another word out. You enjoyed the convenience of working from home until it meant almost every day ended with unpaid overtime conversations that didnโt concern you. It wasnโt like your older, married, co-workers had other jobs to get to. They had families and children. And you had a shift at Hanami House in an hour.
You had been living alone for almost two years. It was an overnight switch from sharing every aspect of your life with someone to now the only human interaction you really had was when you went to work. And they werenโt just someone to you. They were your everything.
When they left, you had to learn how to start over. For the first few days, you packed his lunch out of habit. You would grab your phone to call him when it was late and he still wasnโt home. And you would still serve a second plate that no one would eat.
You had to get a second job to make ends meet. You dreamed that by now youโd be chasing kids around your house, not chasing rent payments. You knew that him leaving was going to be hard, you just had no idea it would be this hard.
You rushed to shower and get dressed in your uniform. You were serving today, which you didnโt mind. You liked getting to engage in small talk, and the weekly check wasnโt half bad either.
You tied your apron around your waist, made sure your notebook and pens were accounted for, slipped on your shoes and ran out the door.
Hanami House was just a few blocks away. The sun was just beginning to set, creating a shimmering film on the world around you. You took a deep breath of the evening air before entering the restaurant.
โY/N-san! I didnโt think you were working today?โ said Hanako. You placed your bags behind the counter and clocked in.
โRumi asked me to cover her while she gets over a cold,โ you explained. Hanako sighed.
โYou know she just calls in sick because she knows youโll take her shift.โ
Hanako has owned Hanami House for 4 years, since her parents passed it down to her. However, with that came giving her young niece, Rumi, a job.
โDoesnโt matter much to me as long as the checks clear to my account,โ you smiled. You looked over the seating chart and found your section. You had a reservation coming in a couple minutes so you quickly made sure their table was set up before checking over the specials menu.
You heard the little bell above the door ring back and forth, signally the arrival of customers. You quickly checked yourself in the mirror.
โY/N, your 7 oโclock reservation is here!โ called the hostess. You exhaled and made your way to the table.
โGood evening, my name is Y/N and Iโฆโ
As you looked up from your notepad, you were met with those pulsing red eyes. You would have recognized those eyes in your sleep. You prayed you would never come face to face with those eyes again. What was worse is that he kept staring back at you.
You regained consciousness when you realized he wasnโt alone.
โUh, hello?โ The lady with him snapped her freshly polished nails in your face. โEyes on me sweetheart, itโs rude to stare at Pro Heroes. Two beers and after you drop them off donโt come back until I wave you down.โ
Katsuki Bakugou looked down at the table as he started to play with his utensils. You werenโt even sure if you said anything in response. You just turned around and walked back into the kitchen.
โY/N, you alright? You look like youโve seen a ghost,โ said Hanako. You pressed your back onto the industrial freezer and slowly slid down to your knees. Hananko knelt next to you.
โI knew that you were over working yourself and now youโve completely lost it. I canโt lose my best employee!โ She teased. You looked up at Hanako, wiping the tears from your eyes. She helped you to your feet
โIโm fine. I thought I knew someone out there butโฆI donโt recognize them at all.โ
You knew you had no choice but to serve them and you were cursing out Rumi for calling in sick. You quickly collected yourself and grabbed the two beers. Bakugou never used to drink when you were together. He said he didnโt like the taste.
โHere are those beersโฆโ
You placed each glass on the table, despite your shaking hands.
โAnything else I can-โ
โI think we are gonna do the duo sushi platter and letโs get extra wasabi on that. Anything else Bakugou?โ
You turned to look at him, his eyes still staring down in front of him. He slowly looked up at you, clearing his throat.
โUh, just miso to startโฆ please.โ He gulped. You nodded.
โOkay Iโll get that started for you,โ you smiled awkwardly.
As you took the menus and began to leave the table, you noticed something that made your heart drop to your stomach. The lady had a bouquet of red roses in her purse. They didnโt have thorns.
โPretty flowers,โ you blurted out. She smiled at you, taking them out of her purse.
โAwe thank you! Men these days just donโt buy flowers for their ladies like they used to, isnโt that right Bakugou?โ
You turned back at him, watching the sweat drip down his forehead. You could hear him cracking his knuckles under the table.
โThatโs right,โ he said plainly. You quickly excused yourself, placed their order, and hid in the back until they finished eating.
Your night felt excruciatingly long after Bakugou and his date left. All that raced through your mind was the millions of questions you had. Most of which started with why.
You wiped down your last table and switched off the lights before closing the restaurant. You often would be the last person here, letting Hanako go home to her family.
As you turned to lock the door, you heard quiet footsteps approaching you. You knew exactly who it was.
โUh, Y/N?โ
You hated how much your heart jumped when he said your name. You loved how he would say your name.
โCan we talk?โ He asked quietly. You could faintly see his reflection in the glass of the door. You sighed.
โFine. Letโs go.โ
Bakugou walked you to a bar next door. You sat next to each other, ordering another beer to get through this conversation. He cleared his throat.
โSo-โ
โWhat do you want Bakugou?โ You stated plainly. He rubbed the back of his neck.
โI didnโt expect to see you.โ
โYeah well sorry that my job interfered with your date-โ
โIt was not a date. And I thought you worked at that tech company?โ
You looked down at your drink.
โHad to get a second job after you left meโฆโ
Your voice faded into the bar chatter. Bakugou opened his mouth but no words came out. You rolled your eyes.
โLook, itโs clear this is just a huge waste of time and we have nothing worth discussing so Iโm leav-โ
As you started to get up from your seat, Bakugou grabbed your wrist.
โNo, please stay.โ
Bakugouโs eyes begged you not to leave. They practically pleaded for you to stay. You carefully sat back down.
โFine, then if we are gonna talk, letโs talk,โ you said.
Suddenly, no questions came to mind.
โI thought you didnโt drink,โ you stated. Bakugou nodded.
โI didnโt until after you. I still donโt really like it.โ
โThen why do you do it?โ
โI donโt knowโฆ I just started drinking when I would think of you. Figured since I didnโtโ like the taste it would be like an incentive to not think about you. But now I think I have Stockholm syndrome.โ
You couldnโt tell if he was joking or serious, but as he gulped down half of the pint, you knew.
โWho was that woman you were with?โ You asked. Bakugou chuckled.
โGod sheโs awful. It was some lame sponsorship deal Kirishima set me up with, but if that means I have to sit through another dinner with her, she can kiss my ass.โ
โBut the roses?โ You mumbled. Bakugou sighed.
โHer husband had them delivered before our meeting. I can see how that looked badโฆโ
โDonโt flatter yourself asshole. I could probably count on one hand the amount of times you bought me flowers during the 5 years we were together.โ You huffed.
โThe flowers you picked were always prettier than what I could find in the store,โ he replied. You looked into his eyes, tears forming in your own.
โBakugouโฆ when you left me, I-,โ
You took a deep breath, trying to collect your thoughts.
โThe day you left me was the same day I lost everything. Iโm not talking about money or stability, Iโm talking about how I lost the one thing that meant the world to me. Bakugou, I loved you. I know those words may not mean much to you but they meant a lot to me. Do you have any idea how pathetic I felt begging you to stay? Begging the one person I shared everything with to give me the common decency of not walking out on me? And you still did! You slept in my bed, you kissed my crying face and then walked out my door. All because you didnโt love me anymore.โ
โY/N-โ
โIโm not done speaking. You told me you didnโt love me. Bakugou I thought I was gonna marry you. I thought that you were my person, and maybe thatโs still true but you made it alarmingly clear that I am not yours. I just canโt believe it took me so long to realize that. I have worked too hard putting myself back together just for you to walk back into my life.โ
You caught your breath, taking a sip of your drink. Bakugou kept eye contact as you spoke. He waited for the clear to speak.
โY/N, I know that the way I ended things was wrong, and I am sorry. I know I should have gone about it better but Iโฆ I just didnโt want to hurt you. Iโm realizing that I ended up hurting you more. I donโt think anything I can say will take your hurt away, but I was hurting too Y/N. I was unhappy and I felt like I had no way out. I know thatโs not a good excuse but itโs all Iโve got.โ
Your heart broke after each word he spoke, the pain resembling what you felt the day he left. Bakugou finished his drink and before he could wave the bartender down, you put his hand down.
โSo what was the point of us talkingโ you asked, sniffling. Bakugou looked directly at you.
โI want you to take me back.โ
You scoffed.
โYouโre drunk.โ
โI am not.โ
Youโd thought long and hard about what you might do if this situation arose. If he had said that two years ago, your answer would have been much different.
โNo.โ You said plainly. Bakugou furrowed his brows.
โNo?โ
โNo.โ You repeated. Bakugou looked around, embarrassed.
โCan I ask why-โ
โFucking hell Bakugou did you not just hear anything I said? You want me to take you back? So what? You can tell me you donโt love me in a couple weeks and I gotta start all over again? No fucking way, you arenโt worth the aggravation.โ
You grabbed your coat and bag and began to make your way through the door. Bakugou trailed behind you.
โY/N Iโm sorry!โ He shouted down the street at you. You stopped in your tracks.
โLook I know I messed up! I lost the best thing Iโve ever had all because I got too much in my head. I know Iโll never love someone the way I loved you. Please.โ
His panting breath lingered behind you. You took a deep breath and turned to face him. Bakugou had a ray of hope behind those deep red eyes. He had the same look you had when you begged him to stay. You almost liked how sad he looked.
โFor their sake Bakugou, I hope you donโt love them like me.โ
