You can love a character and still admit when they're wrong. I love Mello but i can acknowledge his flaws (he has none) and i can hold him accountable for his wrongdoings (he's never done anything wrong in his life) & call him out for his actions (which are always correct).

What's so special about Death Note to me is that every single thing that happened in the story was exclusively and entirely Light's fault.
Would certain things have happened regardless of his having the Death Note? Sure. Misa would still be alive but fucked in the head, L would still be doing L things, Near and Mello would still have that rivalry of theirs, the Yotsuba group would still be awful, and the world would have kept on turning.
But he didn't have to pick up the notebook. He didn't have to write those names. He didn't have to accept this. But he did.
If Light didn't pick it up, Misa might not have gone to such lengths once she got a Death Note. If Light didn't pick it up, Mikami wouldn't have been enabled to do what he did with the notebook he was given. If Light didn't pick it up, his family would still be intact.
He is why his father's dead. He is why his sister's incapacitated. He is why the world's whipped into a fucking frenzy.
It's all his fault, and he has no one to blame but himself.
