Though when she was a child, that’s how her mother and her mother’s mother explained it. “Think about you being happy, then what you’d wear that makes you happy or when you are sad, what would you look like or wear? It sounds silly but that’s how your energy can look, even if your face says something else.” Maddie would continue, but felt like they’d be there hours and to going anywhere with it, “So you were part of the fight?!” the sentence slipped out, “i mean you were in a fight?” she tried to recover poorly, “Not like my floor mates and I have been talking about it.”

“Oohhhhh.” Xander said his eye slighing up. He loved learning about magic and was kind of disappointed that he couldn’t sit in on the girls lessons to hear all the theory, but it wasn’t his place. “That makes so much sense. I love learning about all this magic stuff it’s so exciting.” Xander said with a grin. Xander shook is head. “Well it wasn’t so much of a fight...I would call it more of a scuffle. I mean a few punches were thrown but it wasn’t like anyone got hurt.”

The end of school was coming up and that meant a round of ‘fun’ activities before they all went to their respective homes for a couple months.”I mean, obviously you’ll be getting my first and last dance, but I promised Olivia the rest.”

“You want a prom?” Alfie raised an eyebrow, a smirk pulling on one side of his mouth. “You realise they usually require a date, and, sorry to disappoint, but I’ll be taken.”

That’s like double the amount of people that will want to take me, so that’s like....two people.” Xander said confidently. “And If No one asks me I can like drown my sorrows in watered down punch and you’ll feel sorry for me and give me a slow dance anyway.”

“You pulled them out of the fire,” Emma said with caution, her voice light and slow. It was statement aimed more to herself than to the boy beside her, a realization that shook her perception regarding one Xander Sterling. It was one thing to know that he did not cause the fire, and it was another to discover that the resident Dumfries troublemaker actually saved a few students during the incident. It was uncharacteristic, to say the least, but Emma was not one to judge since she did not personally know the guy. She had only heard of him through the talks that spiraled inside the campus.

“Sterling.” Emma stared straight at him, head cocked to the side. “How come nobody defended you? I understand that you have a rather indecent reputation,” she pointed out, making a face at the obvious. “But that does not give them the right to accuse you of the damnedest incident that ever happened in Dumfries.” The way she said it seemed like it was the most natural judgment in the world. Emma wished it was that easy.

She sat up straighter, reaching for the goggles and pulling them over her eyes. Emma focused her attention on reading the experiment on the paper before her. “It seems like I am not the only unfortunate soul here with a messed up life,” she murmured, low enough to be whisper yet audible enough to be noticed. It was a soft-spoken sentiment laced with forlorn as if Emma was scared to realize that someone other than her had such an awful life. She hoped such a person never existed at all. Pitiful, Emma thought gloomily.

“Don’t sound so surprised. I’m a fucking shithead but I’m not a psychopath.” Xander said with a sigh. He was sick of trying to explain that to his peers. To even some of the boys that he himself had pulled out of the fire. Xander hoped that the culprit would be caught soon and that he would be liberated from the sneers and judging eyes.

“People did. Alfie defended me, some of the other boys that I’m friends with but as soon as Mr. Monero called the cops on me a lot of kids changed their opinion on the matter when I was made a suspect.” He explained remembering when he had just come back form the station that he had never felt more alone. “I mean I hated the teachers and i hated the school work, but Dumfries was my home.” And now it’s just gone. Xander though his eyes flicked out the window in the direction of where the charred ruins of Dumfies was.

Xander’s ears picked up on her little comment. “Oh trust me you ave no idea how messed up my life is.” Xander sighed following the directions on the experiment writing down the results.

Like most fire signs.” Though she couldn’t say that I looked up your birthday last week, not to mention taking to her roommate about you. Though she wasn’t fully lying—after all he did have a warmth about him, a glow of aura that was definitely attractive. “Oh yeah…” their conversation went on, “I heard about what people are saying and frankly I find it disgusting.” her eyes fell down into her cup, “If it’s a consolation, I wouldn’t peg you as an arsonist…far too, obvious for that.”

“Oh....okay.” Xander said a little bit of a confused look on his face not knowing what an aura was. “I’m not really sure what an Aura is but thank you very much.” He said with a smile. He felt a little better and a bit more at ease when she believed that he didn’t start the fire. “Thanks that means a lot. I’m getting better at handling the accusations. I mean I didn’t even punch Tommy yesterday when he accused me.”

Her eyebrows shot up at the sight of the scars marring Xander’s skin. They were very much up close, Emma could as well touch them. She was no stranger to the Dumfries plight, and everyone certainly knew of it, too. After all, it was the predicament that left the whole Dumfries community knocking at the doors of Wardlaw. With such an incident, it was ineffable that rumors sprang regarding the infamous suspect of the arson, the pyromaniac, they said. People knew very well how to play the blame game as it was human nature, sadly so. It just so happened that Xander Sterling, the resident Dumfries troublemaker (or so they say), was the one who took the blame for the worst. He was at the wrong place at wrong time, Emma believed. Xander Sterling was innocent until proven guilty like every body else. Emma was never one to accuse people with just mere assumptions, especially in such a serious case like arson. As far as she was concerned, rumors are nothing but toxic.

Emma was too occupied with her thoughts to realize her hands moving to their own accord, fingers trailing the scars on Xander’s arm. Startled, her hands jerked back as if electrified. She cursed at herself for such a peculiar display of stupidity, especially around the opposite sex. Emma cleared her throat. “I cannot comprehend how you got those,” she simply said, her tone more of a question rather than a statement. She glanced at his scars before peering at Xander.

Xander noticed her touching his arm but he ignored it focusing on reading over the experiment. He pulled his arm away to grab some equipment. “What you don’t knwo how I got them?” Xander asked sounding rather surprised. Most people had managed to hear the story of how he’d manged to get injured. Though many people believed he got the marks on is skin by setting the fire. “Well Let’s go back to March shall we?” Xander asked beginning to set up the experiment. He bit his lip and thought back to the night of the fire. “Alfie and I were woken up by the smell of smoke. The room was hazy so clearly something was wrong. So our wing mostly gets back and I count the boys. We’re missing a good few when we get outside.” He said measuring out the chemicals. “So I run back in and start pulling the missing boys out of the fire.”

Even the boys that Xander had helped to get out of the burning school had seamed to forgotten that it was him that pulled them out. “And I’m not talking just once or twice. I’m talking seven or eight times. It took both Alfie and Mr.Monroe to hold me back from going back in again because it had gotten too dangerous.”

Xander sighed as he wrote down what he and his partner needed for the chemistry experiment the teacher hat assigned them to do. Out of everyone why was he stuck with Emma. His best friend was on the other side of the lab. He really hated not being able to choose his own partner. “Right okay. Safety first.” Xander said pulling the set of goggles over his eyes remembering one of those ‘It’s not cool to lose an eye” Posters that were up in the Chem Lab at Dumfies. He rolled up his shirt sleeves. The burns from where the Dumfries fire had licked his skin had left nasty scars. Ones that he was going to be stuck with for life. “Don’t spill anything on your arm.” He said to Emma bringing over a few bottles of Chemicals. “You don’t want to end up with something like this.” He said gesturing to his own arms.”

God Dumfries’ boys were definitely as good looking as Wardlaw was magical—but Maddie wouldn’t dare say that out loud. “Xander Sterling, Ares, which is ironic cause of it’s element.” Maddie’s face grimace slightly, feeling that those words crept from her lips on accident. “Sorry. I’m Madilyn Walsh but everyone calls me Maddie.”

“How did you know I was an Ari-” Xander stopped and shook his head. “Magic thing I suppose yeah? Like Charles Xavier or something?” Xander asked taking another sip of his coffee. He was some how always surprised every day by the fact that there was always something new to learn about magic. “Never mind it’s cool Maddie. It’s not like you’re accusing me of doing the thing. I’ll let it slide.” He winked.
