Ink Drawing Tutorial by Bryan Schiavone

A brief little update because I’m still working on Day 1 of Inktober. Yes I am going to try and do all 31 days with the official prompt this year. Now as you can see, this will be all be done in digital. So far I only planned to use Krita because I’m still learning Corel Painter. In addition to that, I’ve got plenty of things to do in RL and I’m going to be saving up for a new computer as it is time for an upgrade. (But buying the Nintendo Switch comes first. :P )
So I made a Blogger account...
First things first, I’m not quitting Tumblr. Tumblr has its own unique charms about it while Blogger is a bit more professional. Secondly Tumblr is more user friendly than Blogger. So why exactly did I make one? Well it’s quite simple, I did it for the money. Tumblr was never great at helping bloggers earn money as its core focus is the community. Which why I came here in the first place.
However, it seems like I was holding myself back in terms of writing posts. For the most part people like to see pictures more often than words. Unfortunately, I can be quite wordy with my posts when I want to be. Blogger has a bit of a different scene as it can be known for long worded posts.
Now with that said, I know that some people like myself are very worried that Tumblr is going to be dismantled and merge with Wordpress. Which can always happen in the far future. I don’t know how Tumblr can financially turn itself around. Thus, this is why it is one of the main reasons why I had to make this move.
So in the meantime, think of it as an extension of my Tumblr blogs. Now I currently am working on the layouts for them but I’m also trying to make a habit to keep a schedule with them. And hopefully not fail like the last time. Anyways, I’ll make sure to post the link to them later when I done with the layouts.

Alright here's day #2 of World Watercolor month which is Sunny Sky. The sky part is obvious so I added a river in a forest to make it less bland and bit more challenging.
My deviant Art link: link
I decided to do this regardless of my terrible scanner which eats paper. So for day one I did a Banded Broadbill using the colors Crimson, Ultramarine blue and Lemon with Arteza Watercolor Pencils Expert for the Primary Palette theme. And even though my initial thoughts was this was going to be terrible, it actually wasn't that bad. (My bird drawing skills aren't that great.)
How to draw Mermaids for MerMay coming up next month?
Thanks for the ask @dragonfire810 !I don’t have all that much to say about it, but I can give you a few quick tips about drawing mermaids!
I’m going to start with the anatomy since I find it’s always the best place to start. So, here is a mermaid skeleton!
The way I see it, a mermaid’s tail is going to be like an extension of the spine, just like any other tail is, but there should probably be some rib-like bones for structure. This turns out to be a bit like rotated fish anatomy, but even more like the anatomy of a snake.
Remember to keep a little bit of a butt/waist in there, that’s part of why we kept the pelvis in the anatomy; things look kinda funny if it’s all flat. The muscular part of the tail should be as long or longer than a pair of legs would be, so about the length from the top of the head to the (non-existent) crotch. The fins will continue beyond this point.
Now since the tail is built a lot like a snake it’s going to move a lot like a snake, meaning any bending or transitions are going to be smooth and make smooth shapes. No sharp transitions like at a knee bend because there are no knees to bend!
Because of the curvy shapes this makes, you’re going to want to keep straights and curves in mind to keep your drawing looking appealing.
You can learn more about straights and curves in my drawing tips from animation tutorial.
Now we get to the fins. I tend to do very simple fins, but you can get really creative with them! I highly recommend looking at real fish for inspiration, there are some crazy fish out there. But whatever shape you choose, keep the consistency/thickness of the fin in mind; they tend to bend and move like thick fabric or large petals or leaves.
And last but not least, I, personally, really like giving my mermaids a full set of cloths on top. If you wanna’ brush up on clothing you can check out my fabric and clothing tutorial.
I hope these tips are helpful. Have a great MerMay!!
I might have to try this sometime.
New DA layout incoming = Same problems
Okay it’s time to talk about Deviant Art new layout called Eclipse. But before I talk about let me give you some history. I have always HATED Deviant Art’s current layout. I never liked the colors or the new logo. Anyways the color combination was making feel sick. The new logo feels completely unoriginal and gives me racist vibes to it which I can’t unsee. Not to mention the new system of submitting art was complicated.
Now with all that said, lets get into Eclipse. From what I can see, Wix had a ton of influence on the new layout. Which is good and it gets Deviant Art’s layout from being dated. So that’s a plus in my book and the new customization tools look well done as it should be.
However, it feels like they are beating around the bush. Which is the submission process. I don’t know if there are plans to make it more user friendly yet. I hope it either will be in the future or they finally fixed the current issue with the system. Which the issue is handling multiple files in one submission. The other problem that most people hate is the Popular section but I don’t think that will be fixed. Then there is the whole mature setting debate but that’s a different discussion altogether.
Overall, I think it’s a good update so far but I’m still up in the air about coming back to Deviant Art.
Well Krita is being wonky...
Okay so I was in the middle of doing some big projects on Krita when it started crashing over and over again. I assume that it will be fixed when 4.2 update goes live but right now it’s currently in the testing phase. So I don’t know when that it will be fixed which is a kinda a bummer right now. However, that doesn’t mean that I’m going on an art hiatus though. I just bought Corel Painter 2019 and it has a bit of a learning curve to it. It certainly not like Krita so I hope Krita gets updated soon. But in the meantime I’ll use Painter since I bought it and all.
I’m also considering of making a new Deviant art account. :)
Here’s a phone case design that I working on right now. I’ve gotta say that this thing so far has taken a very long time but that’s what happens when I stare at rocks. <3
Grassy Rock Tutorial by BelieveTheHorror
Some advice for drawing people who have both hair… and horns!! :O
Also, you may feel more comfortable drawing the whole horn first, and that’s fine too! Mostly the point is just to try to draw the hair growing around the horn, rather than under it.
Hope this helps!
Sometimes things just get old
For this new years resolution, I wanted to take my art to a new level. So I decided to practice basic shapes for character design. Primarily because I just suck at it and it severely fails in comparison to my background art. Which is really bad if you want to sell your art. No one wants to buy a stiff, unemotional greeting card because you couldn’t bring to character to life.
So I had to take action. This elephant in the room needed to go. I cannot accept the way my character art is anymore. I do not like it at all and I decided to research the problem. And one of the problems that I found was a little odd but easily fixable.
I never really put into thought that my tablet would be one the issues. My current tablet is an old Wacom Bamboo Pen (Model CTL-460/K). Which is about ten years old if not more. This is a pretty decent old age for a tablet or any electronic device. Not mention, I loved it to death. So when I didn’t realize that my tablet was having connection issues I thought it was my art level. I found out later on after Inktober that it was my tablet causing issues.
So I bought a new tablet and I’ll talk about that experience later. But in the meantime let’s quote Homer Simpson “NOOOOOOO!”
Tuesday Tips - Cape It Simple!
I don’t need to add too much explanation today. A cape, cloak or long coat simplifies the silhouette of most character, gives them a unique look or presence and conceals a lot of the overall anatomy. Keep track of the character underneath to know where to fold, drop or stretch the fabric. The fabric itself should play a role too. Different behave differently. Movement and gravity are key to “ground” your character in the environment and make it look believable. -Norm @grizandnorm #capeitsimple #100tuesdaytipsbook #100tuesdaytips #arttutorial #arttips

Inktober aftermath
Sorry for being a few days late for posting this! I had some shopping to do in RL. So without further ado lets get started. Okay so this was my first attempt at Inktober and I knew right off the bat I wasn’t going to do 31 drawings. Which is why I did four drawings. Unfortunately I forgot to calculate the amount of other things I had to do and almost all of pictures actually show for it. My bad on that part.
Now as for materials, I used a sketch pencil, Cason Biggie sketchpad (which is garbage BTW), Cason XL Mixed Media and some Sakura Micron Pens.
Picture #1:
When I decided to do Inktober I should had thrown this sketch pad in the GARBAGE. This is my really old Cason Biggie and its 50lb paper. It was so terrible to work with it felt like I was digging in the paper with the pens. Not to mention, IT WAS FALLING APART! So I did a really cheesy drawing of Pumpkins, dead trees, tombstones and some clouds. All of which, doesn’t reflect my art level at all.
Picture #2:
Now with all the frustration with the other pad I bought a brand new pad. Which I regret not buying this earlier. The new one is much easier to work with. No more digging into paper here. Unfortunately, I only worded the first drawing. I think I was called this one path.
Picture #3:
This one was an epic fail on my end. I forgot to do some research on drawing mountains. I also need to look how to ink clouds correctly because that didn’t work out right either.
Picture #4:
This is the last one that I did for Inktober and I’m mostly happy about it. I actually had some time to really go out on this. So as you can see, there’s a lot more detail. Not to mention, I was watching some Bob Ross videos gave some ideas how to ink mountain and it did an okay job. As for the mistake that I did was accidentally using the wrong size of micron pen.
Now that’s it for today. I hoped you liked my first trip through Inktober. If you did, then I hope you do some for yourself if you didn’t already. I might do it again next year. And remember I did this for some fun this isn’t my full extent of how I draw. So it wouldn’t be fair to critique this one. :P
Silly audio “issues”
So I decided I wanted to do Inktober because I just wanted to at least get something on Youtube. Well I got all the video clips of me the drawing the picture and that turned out great. The foldable monopod worked fantastic and visually it looks almost like any Youtube video with the exception that the table is really small. Which is nothing I can worry about but I can’t control the situation.
However when I get to recording the audio I often stutter but this wasn’t the entirely the case here. For several months now I’ve been saying the wrong words. As for what reason, I’m not entirely sure but it could be my crooked teeth that’s causing it. I’ve been trying so hard to hide my lisp that this has been happening. So it’s high time that I need to get braces as I really need to talk clearly and not like a person with a severe mental handicap on the streets. (Which is a really sad on how my hometown treats people with high functioning mental illness with a speech problem.)
And of course we can’t that background noise. So I end up getting airplanes (because I live near the airport) and cars (because I live next to a small busy intersection). Unfortunately I don’t think I can control that one unless I do the audio early. Which would mean that none of videos would be on time.
And apparently it’s gonna rain tomorrow so there might not be any light either...
but I’ll doubt that will stop me from doing the challenge.
I feel like someone is me telling NOT to do any Youtube videos. Ugh!
Oh and quick thing, I’m not doing the official list but am planning to make one up as I go. :)
Some good news today!
I’m sorry for not posting for awhile. The whole situation from the move was pretty intense and extremely stressful for me. I don’t like being a burden and being the center of attention in family arguments. Not to mention all the “this person is terrible” comments. That is just petty and LAME and I didn’t want that for me. Gossip is just plain garbage and there is no point in making anyone walk on eggshells everyday. So with that out of the way let’s talk about the good news.
Okay so last March I bought an Apeman A80 and boy did it have a serious heating problem. Not mention a problem with the attachments being messed up. Not to mention, strange electrical crackling noises which is NEVER good. So all this means that I had a factory defect and should’ve asked and gotten a replacement. However, that didn’t happen and that was entirely my own fault.
So I decided to buy the new version of the Apeman A80. That way I can give a proper look through. First thing I noticed is passed quality sticker which is a good clue that it might not be a defect. Then I decided to check the attachments and everything was goo on that end as well. I also checked for electrical problems as well and everything turned out fine. Which means there is defect what so ever and I don’t have to bug customer service about it.
Now that said I also bought a smart tree smart pole X1S for top down shots for Youtube videos and it does the trick. Just keep in mind that it isn’t very tall and that its just a foldable selfie stick with a tripod attachment. But with a little bit a creativity you can do many things with this.
Anyways that all the good news that I have so far as I need to start working on videos and some more updating on StitchnDabble.
