“Allow me to impart this bit of advice,” Ciel normally didn’t deal out advice the way he was now. But something about her reminded him of when he only needed someone who was wiser. “Should you every find yourself consumed by a need for vengeance, it is only a temporary salve. Once you get what you wanted you will feel nothing, only an… emptiness.”

The only sign of any sort of surprise at being addressed with this sort of ‘advice’ was the subtle widening of brightly colored eyes; her expression comfortably null as she allowed the words to digest for a moment. At this instant in time, Kaneko felt no real pull towards a sense of vengeance. But she couldn’t deny that she wasn’t the type to simply turn the other cheek towards those who have wronged her, especially given her occupation.

“… Forgive me, but I don’t believe you know me well enough to make such statements, wouldn’t you say?” She closes her eyes for a moment, not waiting too long before she’s speaking again. “--- But I suppose that isn’t worthless enough for me to toss aside… I shall keep this in mind. Perhaps you speak from some sort of experience?”

BEING SOMEONE WHO ALSO worked heavily in the field of intelligence, Izumo often found himself spending more time than he’d actually like to spend with Izaya Orihara. In fact, he rarely could get away with a single trip to Ikebukuro without needing the man for something or another. Of course, this time was a little bit … different. Izaya was the one here, in Shizume, leaving Izumo little option but to make his best efforts to babysit the man, lest he stir up more conflict than was able to be cleaned up upon his departure. Of course, tailing Izaya meant a good bit of interaction with that shadow of his, and Izumo figured it about time that they actually got acquainted properly – rather than in passing. 

❝So,❞ He mused, taking a long drag of his cigarette as he observed the information-broker typing with worrying speed on three different computers, ❝What do you do? With your time, I mean. When you’re not babysitting this maniac.❞

Kaneko pauses in her idle fidgeting – having been picking absently at her fingernails – before glancing over towards the man as he spoke, considering his question with a small hum. Izumo’s presence was becoming more and more familiar the more he needed Izaya’s services. ( To be fair, there were many who regularly requested Izaya’s services… he was just one of the more tolerable. ) Business was Business, and while she was technically involved, most of the interaction took place between him and her boss, with only small words of acknowledgement or greetings passing between them. Being in the others’ domain made circumstances rather different, and while she’s a bit surprised that he bothered to pick up conversation with her, she’s a little grateful. Being in a new city was leaving her a little off balance… if only because of who she was supposed to look after and how infamous he tended to make himself.

A short scoff of amusement leaves her lips at the last words that leave his mouth, lips curling into a subtle smile. “—I doubt my personal hobbies will interest you.” She begins, switching position so she could cross one leg over the other. “… However, one of the things I tend to do to spend whatever extra time I have dabbling more in the arts. I keep a sketch book on me at all times because… you never know.” Even now, in an unfamiliar city, she could be ditched for a few hours… Izaya still held her dearest affections, but he knew how to test her nerves for sure. Purple eyes flicker back to him, the faint hint of curiosity shining through. “… Do you have any personal hobbies?”

The quietly changing expressions which flashed across Kaneko’s face each held their own story, yet Io couldn’t begin to decipher them. In that moment, he realized just how little he knew concerning her, and it was rather jarring. For all of the time they had spent with one another ( doing small things around the city, taking trips, visiting museums ), he understood so little about her. So preoccupied had Io been with becoming acquainted with Japan that he had failed to become as acquainted with Kaneko as he ought. It was an embarrassing revelation, one which he took no pride in. While he greatly enjoyed getting know others, their time with one another had done little to reveal any pressing details about her. Was that Io’s fault, or simply by her own design? It was the sort of inquiry better left unvoiced. Instead, he determined that he would spend the day figuring out all that Kaneko was willing to tell him. Although it might be little, it would be, at the very least, an excellent key to learning more about her.

“Of course! That sounds excellent.” He tiled his head slightly, a small yet amused grin coaxed onto his lips. “I’ve never been to your apartment before. Have we been anywhere nearby it?” Io could feel anticipation welling within him. Knowing where someone lived could be considered the type of information given to friends — was that what they were becoming? He rather hoped so. Although she might be reluctant to share too much ( an assumption posited through observation of their days with one another ), he supposed he could be satisfied with whatever she deemed comfortable enough to inform him of. If Kaneko was as private in her personal life as she was on the job, Io had best count himself lucky, as it was. “Thank you.” The words slipped from his tongue before he could think to reign them back in. A quiet flush rising along his cheekbones at his own indiscretion, he attempted to explain himself. “What I mean is, it’s not as though you have to do this. Spending time with me like this isn’t part of your job.”

As soon as Io spoke, he was hit with the reality that maybe she would realize that fact and leave him on his own. After all, Kaneko was only looking out for him in the first place due to her occupation, not due to any feelings of a personal nature. He was used to being surrounded by bodyguards, people protecting him because of his position, yet it hit him harder now. Perhaps it was the fact that Io had come to rely on her, as alone as he was in Japan. However, it felt deeper than that, even if he couldn’t quite place the reason why. “But I’m glad that you are. I like being around you.” With a nod of his head, he continued, “Maybe he could do something else, too, like go to a movie afterwards. I haven’t been to the cinema in ages.”

“Hm? My apartment?” A quick flash of apprehension courses through her, but it disappears as quickly as it festered. She was cautious when it came to such questions naturally… for reasons that Io probably had no knowledge about. ( And she intended to keep it that way for a number of reasons. ) She can’t help but mirror his grin with a small smile of her own, shrugging a shoulder as a small snort passes through her nostrils. “--- Here and there. I live near the art museum that we visited at one point, so we passed by it… it’s nothing spectacular.”

It was probably gonna be the most she spoke about it, especially out in the open as such; and she was surprised at herself for speaking what she did about it at all. His curiosity seemed innocent--- she could picture him probably asking the same thing if she was someone else. ( And to be completely fair, she had brought it up first. ) Even so… she trusted him. Which seemed a bit backwards, given their respective roles, but she had to admit to herself that she wouldn’t be as lax with these things – such as ‘celebrating their birthdays’, bringing up her favorite place to eat – if he had proven to be somebody that she couldn’t trust.

And besides… Io’s questions didn’t call for a need to feel alarmed. Not entirely unwelcome, however she couldn’t imagine as to why he wanted to know so much about her. Her favorite food? Favorite place to eat? His curiosity was puzzling to her, although she couldn’t help but feel a small warmth in her chest at the prospect.

But she wouldn’t let herself get carried away. The last time she let her guard down for someone, it led her to her current situation…

Her eyes widen a fraction at the others next few words, a bit surprised at the honesty. He was right—doing this wasn’t part of the job, and she could easily say no and turn heel and leave. ( At the end of the day, anyhow. ) She falters for a moment, fingers picking almost anxious at the end of her sweater, although it’s the only sign of discomfort that she allows to slip over her person. ( Uncomfortable? Just from hearing something she already knew?? But why…?) “Aa… Well, if you’d prefer me to distant myself a bit more, I could---“

Her words die in her throat, mouth hanging open a fraction as her words are immediately rendered useless; his response – more so to his own words than to hers – dispelled any doubt that had been dredged up just moments ago. Her mind couldn’t help but whisper that maybe something was wrong with him--- her? He liked being around her?? A look of soft confusion colors her expression, a thin brow quirking as another blush burns at her skin, purple eyes that were settled on him flickering downward, before glancing off to the side.

“Oh… Well… it’s been awhile since I’ve seen a movie as well…” Years, if she was being completely honest. “--- If that’s what you want, we can do that too. Although… I can’t say that I know what recent titles are playing at the moment… unless there was something you were looking forward to seeing specifically?”

“Hah! You kidding. I spotted you a mile away. Sweetheart you’re a little obvious. You new to the profession or what?” Saya was known for being brash and unpredictable. Just as much as her moods were. Even more so, she had always had a good eye for detail. It was ingrained in her to notice every little detail about a person. Without further conversation Saya pulled her favorite blade from her boot and showed it to the other girl. 

“C’mon, show me what you got, huh?” 

“Wha--- Hey!” Pink tinted Kaneko’s cheeks as her expression shifts into an incredulous glare, the others comments catching her off guard. ‘Obvious’? ‘New to the Profession’? Who did this girl think she was?? Irritation spiked in the girl’s heart as she pursed her lips, biting back venomous words that threatened to escape, knowing that she shouldn’t take it too much to heart. Although the comment managed to make her curious on top of the annoyance—if the other could make such an accurate observation, how long exactly where they in the profession?

She was almost compelled to voice this question before her eyes flickered down to the others boot, her expression immediately shifting upon seeing the blade; a look of almost childish excitement washing over her. “W… Wow… That’s really beautiful…!” Kaneko almost reached for it, but held herself back, clearing her throat before reaching in her back pocket and taking out her own signature blade, holding it out.

“Mine’s… probably not as impressive, but it gets the job done. I have a couple more—I tend to only carry about 4 on my person generally.” Sometimes more when on an assignment. “That’s an interesting model though--- I don’t believe I’ve seen such a blade around here. Is it foreign?”

People watching tended to be apart of the job, especially right before an assignment. It was pretty easy to blend it—many didn’t bother to give her more than second glance in most places. She would have had no qualms about staying outside to do this, but… well, to put it bluntly--- she didn’t want to. And besides, there was something so… captivating about the inside of a tattoo parlor. Not that she’s been inside many—but maybe that was what drew her to stay put in her seat, a leg pulled up onto the chair with her as she inspects various designs littering the wall, little black sketch book out just in case she got spontaneously bursts of inspiration. Maybe she’d consider getting one someday…

Violet eyes glance over towards the man when he speaks, as though just noticing him for the first time. She inspects him for a moment before turning her gaze back onto the walls. “--- Perhaps I just like sitting in wait.”

“Oi, oi you there!” Saya called out to the girl. She was excited and rightfully so. The petite kitsune was looking at a woman much like herself. There were tell tale signs. She could tell the woman had weapons on her. She had training scars and the calloused hands of an assassin such as herself. 

“You got any shiny knives? I’ll show you mine if you show me yours!” She tried to bribe the girl in hopes that she could get her hands on something much nicer than her own worn out knives and sword. 

Kaneko glances over her shoulder when she is addressed, brows furrowing as she did not recognize the voice – and once her eyes rested upon the other – nor the person who had beckoned her. Her appearance was… strange, to say the very least. ( And honestly, if she had been anyone else she might of even bee ‘freaked out’ by the very sight of those ears alone, but… well, she’s seen some pretty outlandish things aside from this. )

She’s fully ready to ignore her and continue on her way, but the mention of ‘knives’ manages to stop her in her tracks, an intrigued shiver seeming to rush up her spine. ( There was also a twinge of suspicion: how would she know that she had knives on her? ) Kaneko turns on her heels and approaches the other, trying to keep her expression neutral despite the twinkle in her eye.

“… I may have some worth sharing.” The assassin takes pride in her knives; sees it as a duty to keep them in top shape. “Although I’m a bit surprised that you’d make such an offer in board daylight.”

Cute Bruiser / Little Miss Badass / Badass Adorable ( They all overlap, so I choose them all instead of one lol ) – Kaneko is only 19 and 5’4” tall, and is pretty damn capable of driving most of her opponents and targets to their knees. You wouldn’t expect it, given her appearance. ( She complains that she looks like she’s 12 instead of 19 most of the time. ) And she’s been taunted and underestimated due to her ‘cute’ appearance. But she’s extremely talented when it comes to combat, and is more than capable of handling herself; especially when armed with her favorite knife.

Black Sheep – Out of her immediate family, Kaneko is the only one to rebel and go against their initial expectations and rules. Even though it was triggered by an outside source and her unhealthy desire to please him(them), she still manages to completely reject her role in her family and become completely estranged from them altogether. 

All Girls Want Bad Boys/Did you Actually Believe?/What does she see in him? – These are all more prone to her ‘main’ verse more than anything, as Kaneko’s feelings towards Izaya is anything but healthy. Izaya is the furthest thing from a good person – at least to those that he sees as disposable. She’s much too blind by her infatuated view towards him to realize that he may just toying around with her, and that she’s essentially being manipulated for his own purposes. People from the outside might notice it if they know who Izaya is and what he does, hence the last trope too.

Tsundere/Yandere – I personally always get torn when trying to decide if Kaneko is either a Yandere or a Tsundere, but I think the best way to go about it is to label her as somewhere in between. Like a Yandere, she can be really obsessive and controlling when it comes to the object of her affection, and depending on exactly how toxic the relationship or pining might be, she’d have no qualms about becoming violent for their benefit as well. And like a Tsundere, she can be very hot and cold; and can have a cold exterior with some sweetness that pokes out here and there. ( Usually with those she’s growing fond of. )
