Aina Kichida (吉田愛菜, Kichida Aina) is a farmer, janitor, and kunoichi originally from Konohagakure. Unable to pursue a formal career as a ninja, she trains at home in secrecy. For a time, she is a fairly active member of the community, best known for her talents as a farmer and her care for local orphans. Despite this, she grapples with an intense loneliness that will not subside no matter how much time she spends with people. She meets Orochimaru after a series of major personal setbacks that send her on a downward spiral, including the loss of her mother. Before long, she volunteers to play double-agent in hopes of eventually making it so the Leaf and the Sound unite under the common goal of stopping Akatsuki, and so Sasuke may come home.

She is eventually exposed and forced to run, turning to Orochimaru for protection in exchange for her services. She joins Otogakure and tries to make a new home out of it, developing an uneasy relationship with Orochimaru over the following months as she attempts to sway him from taking Sasuke's body for himself. Upon realizing he would not change, and that she would never belong in Oto, she turns on Orochimaru and defects again, this time to pursue life as a hermit at sea for twelve years. Eventually, she tires of her solitude and begins the long and messy process of reconnecting with others, forging new bonds and restoring old ones as she navigates a world that has changed drastically in her absence.

"I don't like to call it livin' off the land. 'Off' implies you takin' from the land and givin' nothin' back to it. Instead, I like to call it livin' WITH the land.

Country life can be about farmin', or it can be about gatherin' from the wild. Or it can be both, like for me.

This valley...it's generous in every way. Its soil is ideal for growin' delicious vegetables. Its air and grass are perfect for raisin' animals. Its rocks are chock-full of precious minerals. Its waters teem with fresh seafood. And you won't find no better lumber south of Grampleton.

But...it ain't endless. Some natural resources can replenish, but not as quick as we use them up. Other natural resources are gone forever once they used up. So we oughtn't take more than we need. And what we do take, we gotta put back somehow. That's why I like to call it livin' with the land. Respect the land, and it'll take good care of you."

Someone said “The slow burn of becoming yourself” and I think that might be one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. It’s such a good reminder of how much it takes, how much character development, how much change, and beauty and courage it takes to reach your soul and I hope no one ever gives up on becoming themselves because it’s a never ending journey that only gets better.

This is a way away, but I'm working on Aina's first conversation with the Witch, part of which entails the Witch recalling what had happened on the day she'd caught Caroline and Rasmodius together. I just had to share this exchange with you all because I've just about made myself cry.

"She oughta be grateful I didn't do more." "Why'd ya stop at changin' her hair green?" "…I heard three heartbeats in that room. Two of 'em comin' from her. (…) Don't know what all Ras's told you 'bout me, but…I couldn't find it in me to be that cruel. No matter how mad I was at her."

Good morning, all! Come look at the new art commission I got from @lemongrass--tea: a quiet moment in the life of the elusive witch of Stardew Valley.

The witch's aesthetic is inspired by folk magic, particularly that seen in the video game South of Midnight. In the artist's own words:

South of Midnight's world is based in hoodoo and African American folklore where practitioners use needles to weave magic, hence the hat pin in place of a different tool like a wand. And the view of her examining the egg is almost a little ominous because of like the vascular creepiness of the developing fetus, but there's still warmth in her expression because I imagine she has some attachment to the little lives that she (presumably) morphs into the void chickens.

Indeed, this woman may not have a great reputation. (Admittedly, all we know about her in the game comes from her ex, Rasmodius.) But I, too, can't imagine her as a purely malicious spirit. Instead, I imagine that when she isn't busy cursing people, she tends to the unwanted children who've been turned into doves. Her distribution of Void eggs is in fact a test of one's capacity for unconditional love--something she's always longed for, and something Rasmodius failed to give her when they were married.

I guess you could say Mr. Qi's official introduction into Aina's life represents the beginning of a new chapter post-election arc. One where she stops trying so hard to make people love her and starts doing extraordinary things for the sheer enjoyment thereof. Once Aina grows to trust his intentions, their relationship is a strange yet professional one.

As a reader: This week, I had the pleasure of reading Rainy Day Feelings by Funtimefrnzy on AO3. Seen through Elliott's eyes, it's a beautiful deconstruction of the marriage mechanic in the game and a meditation on marriage in general.

As a writer: I am proud to say that I got out not one but two chapters of Pumpkins, Plums, and Petrichor. An excerpt from the latest installment, titled "Revolution":

Their eyes lock. Aina's honey-brown eyes are red and puffy with tears. Abigail tries not to let the sight of them move her. Aina is not going to cry her way out of this one. "You mind telling me what the fuck that was about?" Aina reaches up to wipe her eyes dry, then wipes the sweat from her brow. "Justice," she answers coldly with a sniff. "Justice!? I-I have to find out alongside the rest of the world that my dad isn't my real dad…and a guy I thought accepted me for me is my—on what planet is that justice!?" "They all knew, Abigail. They. All. Knew. An' they all were gon' keep treatin' you like they been without ever tellin' you th' truth. I made it right. So there." With that, Aina turns on her heel and heads for the bridge connecting her farm to an island containing her wild tree orchard. Abigail storms after her, her arms flying up along her sides. If Aina thinks that's the end of the conversation, she's got another think coming. "So—s-so what do you want, a thank you? For—you—uuugh, thanks for ruining my life, you two-faced bitch!" Aina yanks her bonnet, as red as the twilight, further down the sides of her face. She whirls around and sneers, "Aw, don' thank me! Thank your ma-n-pa! A-an' your self-righteous sperm donor, too! Ain't my fault your folks're a bunch'a liars an' cheats! Reckon that's where ya got it from! Now go away." The words hit Abigail like a barrage of quartz shards piercing her skin and breaking off in her blood. "I—I'm the liar? You go behind my back, steal my spit, shout about it to the whole world, but I'm the liar? What the hell did I do? Dad—" He's not your dad, is he? "D-Dad's the one who stole from you! And even then, how does that give you the right to—" Aina pounds a fist against one of her pine trees, that hateful glare she'd worn back on the stage returning in full force as the last of the sun sinks beneath the treeline. Soon, the glowstone ring on Abigail's left hand—a gift from Aina—will be their last source of light beyond the farmhouse. "A-a-answer me this, Ms. Knight-Wannabe: where were you when I really needed your pr'tection? You were there. I saw you! You—you heard Lewis say all those horrible rott'n things 'bout me loud an' clear…an' you didn' say nothin'. You didn' do nothin' to help me! Y-y-you jus' let 'im talk about me like I—like I was trash. Why?"
