Okay, #kuretakezig pens have changed everything. I actually didn't start painting with watercolor until recently and I try not to say I've wasted really good paper and paints because it was a learning process, but I did. Don’t go to art school — I. M. H. O.

The traditional approach is failing us. It’s time for a change.

A friend shared this article with me today, which was perfect timing because I’ve spent the last few days ignoring phone calls from art schools I requested more information from. 

It was inspiring to read, (I bought some of the books he recommended plus some others that sounded interesting) although I think there are still many other free resources out there such as Coursera. 

Anyway, hopefully some other artists out there will find this useful and I’ll comment more once I’ve read some of the books on the list.

Drawing with charcoal has become my new favorite tool. I’ll do a quick outline using a charcoal pencil, go over with water, let it dry, then fill in with color.

Or the reverse, paint my first water color layer then outline with a charcoal pencil. It adds such a dramatic contrast

Shark Cookies

I made these yummy shark cookies last night in lieu of studying for finals. Unfortunately the gills I made weren't visible through the frosting. I'll have to try again during Shark Week.

Recipe for cookies:

1 cup butter

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1 egg 2 1/2 cup flower (sifted)

Splash o' vanilla

*Add a little strawberry or raspberry jam near the mouth for that bloody affect 

Let dough sit for a 3-4 hours or over night before rolling out and cutting shapes! Bake at 350 degrees.

Frosting:

2 tablespoons melted butter

1 tablespoon milk (more if you want thinner)

Splash of vanilla

1 cup powdered sugar
