Chapter 2 :
Jason gets dragged away from patrol (and Danny) by the bats at a very poor time, they end up ok tho :)
max 2-3 chapters, short and sweet, I was just craving some Jason/Danny fluff
At this rate there was no way he was catching them before they reached the facility, which meant he had been spending the last 20 minutes of driving coming up with a simple raid plan.
He swerved through traffic and turned up a new street and weaved through the city before finally the area opened up again to just road and empty space. He wasn’t completely sure where he was right now, it wasn’t Gotham, honestly it might not be New Jersey anymore. He picked up the speed, now that he was back to a wide open road he opened up the throttle and gunned it. He wondered briefly if he could make up any time if he kept up this speed when Barbara’s voice came through his helmet again.
“Hood, they’re about to reach the facility, you’re still 30 or 40 minutes behind at least…”
He grunted in response and pushed his bike a little harder, he’d apologize with a shop day later, Danny was more important.
Roughly 10 minutes later it got worse: “His trackers just went off, I think when they took him inside, it means they’ve got some kind of block up.”
“Shit, ok. Do you think they’d come back on if they took him out again?”
“I couldn’t tell you unless it happened, I’m working on getting you the schematics, you’ll be able to see the building in a few miles, about 15-20 minutes here”
“Alright”
True to her estimate, he caught his first glimpse of the facility around 20 minutes after, and could see the whole thing moments later. It was garrish against the pale landscape of dry fields and grass. It was pristine white (he expected no less) and an odd shape, immediately he could pinpoint all of their outer level security and it’s weak spots, and he veered off the road, into the field, about a mile away from the building to drive the perimeter.
“How long has he been in there now O?”
“approximately 37 minutes now since his trackers dropped”
“Ok, 40ish minutes, they couldn’t have done much in that time right?”
Babs didn’t answer, she didn’t have to, it wouldn’t have made him feel any better.
Just as he was preparing to move in, plan in mind, Oracle spoke up again.
“Hey, just got into the camera system, their security is weak for a so-called government agency…”
“Do you have eyes on him yet?” He turned his bike towards the building.
“Looking…”
He veered up onto the street as he watched another van roll up the road, he laid his bike in the grass and crouched beside the road to wait.
“I think I’ve got him, damn, they have him in a lab already, I can’t access the camera inside but I can see him on a table through the door window, he’s still alone and unconscious”
Jason listened as he leapt out and latched onto the van as it went past, starting from the back bumper he crawled underneath and held himself over the ground close to the frame as they went through the gates and into a parking garage.
The first chance he saw., he dropped and rolled behind a pile of something, unnoticed. He spotted a hallway and crept to it.
“Get me there, I'm in” he said carefully, listening intently as Oracle directed him. His trackers had gone off inside too, but she was thankfully still connected to his helmet feed. It was slow going, the two of them trying to compare where he was to the schematics and the lab O had found.
By the time he was close he didn’t need Barbara’s help, he was close enough to hear, and feel, Danny yelling before it was cut off.
His core was still wailing and pulsing though, and Jason called back with his as best he could as he made a few more turns. He needed Danny to know he was here.
He kicked in the door when he reached it, a gun in one hand he shot the hand currently pressing a blade to Danny’s arm. The agent dropped their scalpel and the glass bottle they’d been dripping Danny’s blood into with a loud yelp. Their partner pulled a weapon out and Jason shot it out of their hand, then shot their leg. He was glad he had kept spare lethals in his bike.
Before either scientist could reboot from the sudden attack, Jason stormed forward and approached Danny, it seemed he’d fallen unconscious again.
He quickly found the release button for the table restraints and scooped Danny up the minute he was loose, his core rumbled at the little whimper Danny let out.
Obviously the agents had sounded some kind of alarm and Jason hurried out of the room, but he wasn’t running. No he was mad now, and what better way to burn out anger than by ending a few worthless, soulless freaks.
He could hear rushing footsteps, but they were still far enough away that he took a moment to look over Danny’s injuries. There were several large burns, one on the front of his shoulder and chest, and one on his upper back and lower leg that must have been the shots Jason heard over the phone, based on the state of the damage.. He was clearly bruised, from the table restraints as well as force in other places, and there was a deep, thin cut on his arm, the cut Jason had interrupted. There were several more already closed up on the other arm. Jason didn’t really want to think about why the GIW were trying to harvest Danny’s blood, but it wouldn’t matter in a few minutes.
A hoard of agents cut off the hallway in front of them, and Jason simply tossed a smoke bomb, let it spread, and fired into the cloud of it as he walked through, Danny cradled majorly with one arm as he shot blindly, core humming at the shouts of pain and obvious hits he racked up until he was leaving a cloud of smoke and bodies behind him. He continued working through the groups like this until he got to the garage, which had luckily been vacated in an attempt to cut Jason off
He quickly nabbed the keys for a van off the wall, found it, and loaded Danny in. He quickly double checked the internal doors to the garage were locked so no one could follow them, and then he hopped in, started the van, and rolled out of the garage. Once they were a decent ways away, nearly to the gate, he hit the button on his batwatch that he’d been itching for since he’d gotten Danny and gunned it towards the main road.
The explosion rocked the area just as they reached the road, turning in the direction of Jason's ditched bike. He didn't even watch as the building lit up behind them.
He stopped and got out to get his bike once he found it, and paused to watch the fire spread for only a moment before O finally hacked his comms back online and started talking. He hauled his bike into the van and got back in as she shouted at him.
“Hood what just happened? Did you blow up the facility?? Do you know how many people you probably just killed? B’s gonna kill you.”
“Yeah well, funny thing, I don’t particularly care, they were going to do much worse to Danny.”
“I get that, but that doesn’t really justify—”
“O, the way I see it, if they get to decide Danny isn’t a person, I get to decide they aren’t people either, because they aren’t. I know you’ve only been in the loop for a little while now, I’ll send you some stuff I kept from you later so you can see the whole deal, but you know what they would’ve done. Those people are monsters, they don’t have hearts, they don’t have souls, they have no regard for life or unlife, they torture innocents and have killed tens if not hundreds just by experimenting and testing and prodding.”
“I get it Jay, I do, I'm just warning you, Batman isn’t going to be happy if he finds out. And I’m worried you aren’t going to be happy when you take it in later”
“I know, I don’t care, Danny is hurt, again, and I just blew up a government base, I'll send Bruce the same shit I'm gonna send you and he can calm his tits. And I won’t regret this.”
“Hah, alright, well, in any case, the batjet is on the way to get you, piloted by one Timmy Drake, so just stay put for a minute.”
“You telling me I stole a van for nothing?”
“Yes”
“Great. Thank you O”
“Sure thing, ETA 5 minutes.”
The jet decloaked as it landed a little ways away and Tim walked out once it was settled. Jason got out of the van and popped the back bay open to pull his bike back out.
“You take this, I got him.”
Tim nodded as he took the bike and rolled to the vehicle and up the ramp.
Jason double checked the van for any of his belongings, planted an explosive to take care of any genetic material, and scooped Danny back up. He thankfully wasn’t bleeding or at risk of bleeding out, but he was weak, his core was likely a little damaged and the burns were brutal, if anything got infected he’d be fighting, so Jason was glad he didn’t have to haul them back across the state in a stolen, nasty van.
Tim’s face shifted when Jason walked on with Danny, but he didn’t say anything, just helped Jason get Danny situated in the med bay of the jet and started preparing to get the plane in the air.
They took off, and once they were up Jason triggered the bomb in the van before they got too far.
Danny was strapped (as loosely as could be safe) to a small gurney that was thoroughly secured to the wall of the jet; there was a little curtain that Jason opted to leave open as he pulled out a med kit and started cleaning the burns. Danny let out a little hiss as the alcohol hit the wound, which was both good and bad. It meant he was more conscious than assumed, but it also meant this was gonna hurt. Jason continued with the cleaning, he decided to avoid burn cream for the moment and instead just wrapped it lightly so nothing would touch the burns. He’d let Alfred and Leslie deal with actual treatment, but for now it was clean. He patched up the cuts on his arm, the one Jason had walked in on, and one that had reopened during transport. He opted to use butterfly bandaids rather than try to stitch in the air and once again settled for clean.
Once they were cruising Tim put the jet on autopilot and came back. He watched quietly as Jason cleaned Danny up a bit more, now that there wasn’t an exposed wound to stress about Jason was wiping off Danny's face and skin. He realized he was avoiding something, recognized that his brain was shut off aside from the task and that he was either compartmentalizing or having some kind of response, but he ignored that knowledge until Tim touched his shoulder.
Tim gestured behind him with his head, “your turn”
Jason frowned, but followed, Danny didn’t need anything else right now, Jason wasn’t hurt though, so there wouldn’t be much for Tim to do.
Tim sat him down in the copilot chair and turned it to the side, he got an alcohol pad and a small bandage out and applied both to what was apparently a cut on Jason’s face before checking him for any other pressing injuries.
“I’m fine T…”
“Hm…there isn’t anything immediate but you still need to get checked over when we get back”
“Right…”
“Hey, are you ok? I don’t think I’ve seen you like this…”
“Heh, you probably haven't, I’m ok, just going through the motions ya know? It’s— this is how I used to like, process as Robin, I'd have a little internal response, and I’d work through it and compartmentalize, and then I’d move on. It’s just the adrenaline fading. The come down has always been weird for me…but ancients I haven't been this freaked out in a while”
“Ok…do you? Want to talk at all?”
“No, not really.”
“Ok”
They just sat in silence for a moment, Jason staring at the floor and Tim watching him. After a while he finally felt like he could breathe a little better and spoke up.
“Hey, thank you, Tim. For like, everything today, for helping get me out, for listening, for offering help, for coming to get us. I um, I don’t know how well it would've gone, driving us back.”
“Course Jay, what’s family for?”
“Heh, careful, I’m not exactly happy with our family right now.”
“Aside from Bruce.”
“And Dick”
“Dick didn’t do anything wrong, you just. You kinda spiralled, like fully freaked out and flailed before we got you in the chair, we thought you were having a seizure or some kind of attack or something…he was just concerned and confused, you basically broke down and fainted on him, I think he was worried about you running off on your own, and what we could hear from that phone call was worrying…but he wasn’t going to stop you, not fully.”
“Hm, I guess you’re right. And I doubt it was fully his idea to kidnap me…”
“I think that was Damian actually.”
“That checks out.”
“Haha yeah”
Tim gave him an odd look then, and although Jason knew better, he still asked, “what?”
“...how come I didn’t know you were gay?”
“Pft what? Who said I’m gay?” he was. Jason was gay. Queer. He was also just really funny. Like so funny.
“Your boyfriend back there.”
“He’s unconscious, he can’t tell you anything.”
“Fine sorry, the way you look at him and touch him told me.”
“Oh did it?”
“Yeah.”
Jason snickered and ruffled Tim’s hair.
“Yeah ok, you’re right, obviously. If it makes you feel better, no one else knew either, aside from Babs. And maybe Cass.”
“How did you keep a whole partner hidden for so long? Romantic and caped”
“Well it helps that he has invisibility, and that I have him stationed on the route farthest from the border and told him not to interact with any of you. he’s part time on patrol too, he handles more of my office work, and we’ve been working on a few projects together that he’s been obsessing over a bit. Also we’ve had Barb on our team”
“Ok yeah, but like, does anyone else even know you’re not straight?”
“Gay or queer works, and before this incident they didn't. I’m guessing they’ll figure it out pretty quick now, but again, no one aside from Barbie—”
“Hey, I say it everytime, Don’t call me Barbie, how’s it going there?” Oracle interrupted over the cockpit intercom.
“We’re good Babs, he’s in the back on the gurney, got him cleaned up and wrapped, ‘m gonna let Leslie and Alf handle full treatment.”
“Good idea, Leslie’s on her way to the manor right now, and Alfred’s prepping the med bay, he wants to know if there's anything especially dire or specific that needs treating and prep for”
“Nothing that’s gonna kill him in the next 12 hours, honestly unless any of this gets infected he should be fine, main issue is burns, two big patches on his upper back and on his chest, smaller one on his lower left leg, I’ll have to help with treating those, if you wanna send someone to get our home medkit that would be helpful. He’s got a decent amount of external bruising and general battery, and some minor surgical cuts. They took some blood from him too, don't know how much, but a drip or something might be good. The biggest thing I’m worried about is internal issues, I– I’m not gonna lie, the amount of time he’s been down and out for has me a little worried.”
“Got it, Alfred’s on it, Cass is heading to get your med kit, I’m gonna head to the manor to meet you guys, figured you’d appreciate some back up.”
They’d been off planet and out of town for nearly 2 and a half months now and it was nice to be back, back where he—they—belonged.
He felt light and re-energized as he raced over rooftops, and though it could have just been the ectoplasm boost, he couldn’t help but think it was also the feeling of being home, settled, finding it’s way back into his bones.
It had been a great night so far, mainly consisting of petty crime and check-ins with goons, leaders, and workers.
He slowed as his pager buzzed, coming to a stop as he answered the check in, right on time, per usual.
It felt nice to go through the motions of the usual check in with Jason, relaying everything important and catching each other up on the night so far, the routine felt nice, comfortable.
They moved on from their respective places, dancing through their territory effortlessly in sync despite not being near each other, this had to be Danny’s favorite part of this job, knowing Hood, Jason, was still right there, sensing his movements and reveling in the fact that even apart they worked so smoothly together.
It made him feel warm and good, safe, he had Hood’s back and Hood had his, it was how they worked, and nothing came between that.
He paused for a breather and checked his screen. Hood was heading towards the cave, along with the rest of the bats. He didn’t like that, usually Jason told him or at least paged him if he was gonna be occupied or out of their zone, that probably meant he’d been coerced into going, which meant he was gonna be pissed off when he got home. He frowned at his screen, already mentally planning out what to do for Jay when they got back.
He heard shouting a little ways up and got moving again.
He peered into the alley before dropping down between a mugger and their victim. Danny expertly disarmed the attacker and knocked them out, they were pretty young, definitely just desperate. Hopefully getting stopped and having their weapon and mask taken away would stop any future attempts. He helped the victim up, a woman in her forties or fifties who was clearly just trying to get home. Luckily she didn’t seem too shaken, Gothamites, but he offered to walk her home anyway, and felt better when she agreed.
They chatted lightly as they walked and soon he was waving as she slipped into her apartment building.
He was almost back on his route when he heard them.
Before he could even process there was a green ray being shot up at him, barely missing his face as it shot past him into the sky. He snarled as he leapt over the alley and took off running. He thought he’d made some good ground, but soon he reached a gap too wide on a roof too short, and there were agents on every side, he dodged as best he could from his higher ground, before he eventually realized he was gonna have to fight his way through and make a run through the streets, surely they couldn’t keep up with him through the alleys of Crime Alley.
Danny ducked behind something on the roof and quickly typed a few messages to Jason, praying he’d be able to make it. Although Danny could likely handle this just fine, there were a lot of agents.
The fight was short and dirty, he clawed his way through and ran again, thankfully they had to thin out groups a bit to try and keep up with him through thin alleys and corners, but they definitely had a way of tracking him with how hard they were to shake.
He was temporarily safe, and very out of breath, when his pager finally buzzed.
He fumbled to get it out and press answer, but the sound of the call connecting felt like a deep breath.
“Hood? Where are you? Fuck there’s so many— “ Danny could hear them getting closer again, he caught a glimpse of white around a corner and took off again, pager held low in his hand as he dashed.
“Fuck, Hood, no time, how fast can you get here?” he was still running, he wasn’t even sure Jason could understand a word he was saying through his ragged breathing.
“Soul, crap I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m a little tied up right now are you ok? I can try to hurry but the bats have me literally tied up in the cave, and I might’ve had another panic attack, where are you?”
“Yeah, ok, that’s a good excuse I guess, you’re forgiven, not to gloss over that, but if you could get out or send someone that would be really great, I don’t know how much longer I can—” a new group of agents was suddenly in front of him, cutting off his initial route “—shit they really come out of nowhere, listen I’m on Fourth and Gains and I- Aghhk, shit! Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck”
Ohhhkayyy that hurt, that hurt really bad. One of them got him in the back, the spatter of it grazing over his shoulder and arm as well, lighting his skin up with a cold burn and a crawling sense of wrong he wasn’t used to. Ghost ecto-rays burned hot. He teleported out of desperation, groaning as he landed and doing his best to not keel over with the dizziness teleporting left him with.
Having nerfed powers really sucked at times like these.
“Soul? Soulbird are you hit? Fuck” Danny took a slow breath as he moved down the new alley he’d teleported himself to as fast as he could manage, they would catch up soon, he had only moved a few blocks and the cold-hot burn was spreading.
“Ok, ok, I’m ok,” Danny hissed in pain as he stumbled and only hoped Jason hadn’t heard it.
“Fuck, there’s no way I’m outrunning them right now, but I finally triangulated their closest base, sending you the location now,”
“No Da– Soul, you can’t– they can’t get you like this,” ancients, Danny hated making Jason sound that sad.
“I know, kinda pathetic right? It’s ok, I know you’ve got me, there’s the location, I’ll do my best to keep my trackers online, love you, see you so— ah shit–“ He was cut off by another shot hitting his ankle, he hadn’t noticed them getting close again. He made some kind of desperate, pained noise as he dropped, his pager slipping from his hand and landing somewhere else as he was converged on by way more agents than Danny thought possible.
He just barely stayed conscious enough to note his trackers hadn’t been touched as he was tied up and tossed in a GIW van, the sting of the shots, along with the ache of the syringe they’d plunged into his neck pulled him into darkness after the van started moving.
Jason was a little scared of how amazing the date was, of how amazing Danny was so far. More than anything he was afraid of how good he felt after.
Of course, this was immediately dashed by who was sitting in his living room when he got home.
Multiple whos. Watching him walk into his own apartment at 10:30 in the morning, grinning like a dope, wearing borrowed clothes, and probably reeking of unknown alpha. Fuck. fuuuccckkkk.
He tried to back out the door and escape, but Dick was faster, jumping up and grabbing him to manhandle him back into the apartment with a menacing grin. Officer Grayson perp walked him to the couch and forced him to sit down, where he was immediately grabbed by Cass on one side and Tim on the other, arms pinned. In theory he could force his way out of this, but that took more energy than just taking whatever they had planned. So he behaved. For now.
“Well, well, well. What do we have here?” Dick drawled, and Jason already regretted deciding to comply. “Where oh where have you been all night?”
“N–Nowhere.” Jason avoided Dick’s eyes to the best of his ability. Obviously he knew that lie wouldn’t work, he wasn’t even trying, but he figured he could squeeze a few more minutes of peace out of this interaction if he dragged it out well enough. Especially since Dick, a beta, currently had no idea he was covered in pheromones. That would change in a minute when he asked one of the goddamn blood hounds on either side of him to report a scent check, but for the moment Jason was safe.
“Cass! Report!”
Oh boy.
Cass cleared her throat softly and raised her hand: “Alpha, sir! Strong! All over him, the clothes too, mint, pine, ozone. Not familiar.”
“Just one alpha?”
“Yes.”
“Hmm, Tim? Anything to report?”
“Like Cass said, singular unknown alpha pheromones all over him. His own scent is subdued now, but it was sweeter than normal when he walked in.”
“This is so creepy you guys.” Jason slumped back into the couch as Dick considered the reports, pacing.
“Hmm, uh-huh, I see.” Dick, ever one for drama, laid out the facts, “so: you were out all night, with a strange alpha, and came back late into the morning, wearing a stranger’s clothes and reeking of said unknown alpha, while your own scent has changed? …What do you have to say for yourself?”
The odds so far were not in Jason’s favor. The evidence was heavily stacked against him.
“I don’t have to tell you anything.” He said defiantly, still trying to drag it out. Dick’s disappointed look told him he wouldn’t be holding out much longer.
“Jay…don't tell me you…got pollened? Or drugged?! Kidnapped?!?”
“What? No! None of those, I didn’t even patrol yesterday…”
“Then was it a— a date? An actual date? With an alpha?! Aww little wing!”
“Nah come on Dick, it was probably just a hook up, you know Jason.”
Logically Jason knew he was being baited into telling the truth, and that Tim was just saying that to get him to spit it out and defend himself, but something about the way he said it, like Jason couldn’t have possibly gotten an actual date with an actual alpha, completely ticked him off.
“No, it was a date, an actual date, with an alpha.” He said, slumping further into the couch to try and hide his blush.
Based on the way Tim and Cass grinned and looked at each other, Jason had walked right into the trap. Obviously Tim didn’t think of him like that. They’d had conversations about that kind of thing enough times for Tim to know that was an insecurity, which was exactly why he’d used it to poke an admission out of him. The little brat.
Dick gasped softly, “Really? It was a date? Oh my gosh Jay that’s great! You have to tell us about it! And about them! Was the date fun? Are they nice? How’d you meet?”
“Slow down Dickhead, sit down, I’m done being interrogated" he grumbled, shaking Cass and Tim off of him but not making to leave. He could do this. He could have a normal conversation with people he cared about, about someone else he was starting to care about. Dick settled in the arm chair and Jason took a breath.
“His name is Danny, we sat next to each other on my flight home a few weeks ago. He helped me not freak out on the flight and we talked and stuff on the plane, he asked me for my number and if he could take me on a date, and we’ve been texting. Last night was the first time we were both free so we went out.”
“Aww meet cute! And? How was the date?”
“Uhh it was— it was good…really good. He paid, took me out to dinner, and we got gelato. Then we went back to his place and watched a movie andI fell asleep on the couch, so he put me to bed and I ended up staying the night…”
Tim and Cass exchanged a look again, “Is that all that happened?” Cass drawled and Jason sighed, hiding his face with his hands.
“We may have made out a little bit…”
A series of teasing ooh’s went around before Tim prompted him further with an eyebrow raised, “and?”
“And nothing, he asked about boundaries and I said I didn’t feel comfortable going too far, especially since we were going to see each other more, so we just made out and watched a movie.”
“Holy communication.”
“Yeah, uh, it caught me off guard a few times, he seems very good at communication and boundaries.” Unlike everyone else in their family, clearly.
“But it was good? You had fun? You felt good?” Always trust Dick to be worried.
“I…I think last night was the best I’ve ever felt with anyone, ever. He made me feel so…I don’t know, me? Like every time I got even a little insecure he just knew? And immediately made it go away and I just– I think I really like him guys.” Jason admitted, feeling good enough to feel like being vulnerable with his family, even as he embarrassedly sank further into the couch. It’s insane what Danny was doing to him. Why was he suddenly a real person after getting some dick? Not even. After getting some kisses? Some– some affection? That's all it took? Really?
Ridiculous.
Before he could come back from his thoughts there were arms around him. Dick had gotten up from the arm chair and wrapped his stupid octopus arms around all three of them. There was no escape
“That's great Little Wing. You look really happy, I’m glad you found someone who’s doing that for you and making you feel safe, you deserve it.”
Wow. Maybe he really did just need some affection. Jason usually doesn’t enjoy unexpected hugs; ever since he was a kid they bothered him, when he’d be expected to hug someone, or if someone touched him without asking. Sometimes it really made his skin crawl, especially after—you know—dying, not to mention the lazarus side effects too. But this was nice, and Dick sounded so genuinely happy for him it was hard to believe. God this family was terrible about being open and sincere.
“...does that mean you guys won’t be creepy and investigate him?” Jason asked hopefully. All three of them laughed.
“Hahaha oh Jason. Not even a little bit, that alpha’s getting vetted like he just applied to join the Justice League.”
“We’re gonna look into him more thoroughly than any up and coming rogue” Tim tacked on helpfully.
“He’s getting followed home.” Great. Thank you Cass. God forbid anyone have a partner in this family.
“...I hate you all” they laughed again and released him. Dick stood and headed for the kitchen, announcing he was making coffee as he waved a hand in Jason’s direction. “Jason, make us breakfast, we’ve been here all morning waiting for you.” Like they hadn’t chosen to be here waiting instead of eating breakfast at home.
“Ooh yess. I’m starving, Dick will you make me a mug too?” Heh, maybe Alfred had put a coffee ban on Tim again. Not that Tim usually drank coffee, but when he was desperate and out of energy drinks he'd take just about anything.
“On it, what should we have for breakfast? Or brunch now? Brunch?” Dick called, already heading for the kitchen.
“French toast! French toast!”
“Ooh yeah, good idea Cass, Jason, do you have fruit to put on top? You do, right? And whipped cream?”
The attack force got up and started raiding the kitchen, Jason sighed as he started obeying their demands. If princess Cassandra wants french toast, french toast she will get.
“Will you guys at least go easy on a shovel talk if you ever meet him?” He tried one last effort to protect Danny, desperate, hopeful that french toast would bring out the compassion in their hearts. They blinked in response.
“Why would we do that? Some strange alpha is putting his hands on my baby brother and you expect me not to shovel talk him? Impossible”
“Inconcievable”
“I’ll bring the shovel personally.”
“This house is a fucking prison” Jason grumbled, his siblings snickered at his reference while they fished berries out of his fridge and made coffee. Cass was nice enough to make tea for both of them, and fixed his for him while he cooked. He supposed this wasn’t too bad after all. It was a good morning, he’d had a great night, and his kitchen was full of people he cared about, laughter, and french toast. It wasn’t bad at all. Maybe this was where Jason Todd's life finally took a permanent turn for the better.
Sorry for the wait I guess lol? I forgot I split the first chapter up on Tumblr and hadn't posted the rest, but the whole of what I have done is up on Ao3 and has been :)
“A um, personal issue came up, but I dealt with it. Nothing too difficult, I had the bulk of it finished up pretty early on, the situation was just pretty widespread so it took some time to tackle all of it physically.”
Jason just hoped they'd accept that.
“Hm. I want a report with real answers by the end of the week.”
“And what makes you think I’m going to do that? Like I said, it was personal, and it wasn’t a mission you administered, you don’t just have a right to everything I do, especially not case work.”
“What did you do? You only get this cagey when you’ve done something”
“I didn’t do anything Dickhead, nothing non-bat approved at least, kept everything completely pg with only a few, minor, very minor explosions. I don’t even think anyone died, not that they wouldn’t deserve it.”
Dick and Bruce were both giving him the distrustful, squinty look that would make almost anyone fold; if they were wearing dominoes, and if he was anyone.
He practically had training to withstand their stupid squinty eyes, plus everything got a lot less intimidating when you could replicate it.
He gave them a squinty face back, “I’m not lying, stop squinting at me, you’re not entitled to my personal life just cuz you can’t trust me”
“Woah, first of all, no one said they don’t trust you Jay”
“No, but you didn’t not say so, I can read between the lines Dicky, and I get it, I wouldn’t trust me either, but I’d at least have the decency to not pretend I did. I get that you guys are concerned but I have seriously been better. I know you’ve seen that. I’ve proven myself over and over again, that I’m fully in control and following my limits, and yet you still treat me like I’m some wild animal. I haven't slipped, I haven't hurt anyone unnecessarily, I have shown so much restraint, I haven't even had an episode in months. I haven’t killed in at least a year and I don't even carry lethals on me anymore! How many times am I gonna have to prove I’m good and trying and doing better before you stop watching me for signs I’m going to snap? I don’t— I don’t want to hurt any of you, and you make it really damn hard not to get mad sometimes and I just, I feel like I can’t talk to you anymore, I feel like, I can’t show any emotions aside from snark and like, nonchalant happiness, because you either assume I’m going to go fucking crazy, or relapse killing or something, or that I’ve been fucking possesed.”
He didn't know what he was saying anymore, but he knew he wasn’t being interrupted and he needed to say some of this, he continued, “I’m a person. I’m not a barely tamed animal or something, I’m a person, I’ve gone to therapy, I’ve gotten help, I put in the work for that, I can fucking handle having emotions, I can get angry without going crazy and you just– can’t see that, can you? I've apologized, and made up for my mistakes and the harm I caused, and I’ve backed away and made myself small just for you to accept me. I am trying so hard, and it feels like everyone else has figured that out but you two, and I’m sick of feeling like everyone’s tiptoeing around me! I’m not going to bite your hand off if you touch me, or trigger me by accident or something. I know, I have given plenty of reasons to be wary, but in the last two or three years? I’ve turned it around, I have given you so many new reasons to trust me again, I have shown you how much I can control, and I feel like I have proven I’m better, but what is it going to take for you to believe that? I just, I don’t understand what else you—”
His rant was abruptly cut off by his pager going off.
Shit. Danny. Jason never told him he was—
He pulled out the pager, barely getting to read the message before it was swiped out of his hands by Dick who landed from his overdramatic flip several feet away with the saddest, kicked puppy disappointment face ever, at least he looked a little bit cowed after Jason’s rant.
But Jason was pissed now. He took a deep breath, eyes shut and everything, before turning to face his older brother.
“Please give that back, it’s urgent.”
“Nope, we’re having a conversation, you can have it back when we’re done. Did you have anything else to say or can I say something now?”
“Shit, Dick, please, I need to read that, the first message I saw was concerning enough, I at least need to respond so no one’s waiting on me.
He did his best to push some desperation into his voice.
Dick hesitated then, but still denied him. “You’re people are smart, they can figure it out right?”
“I mean yes, but—“ it buzzed in Dick’s hand again, the man refusing to look at it, apparently afraid of verifying his claims. “Shit Dick please, please give it back, I cant- something is wrong please—“
“Nope, not until we’re done talking, they’ll be fine” he slipped it into a pocket, the device disappearing, “and we’re gonna have an actual conversation this time, not a rant”
Jason whipped back to look at the rest of the table desperately, the only message Jason had seen had three letters in it that Jason really didn’t want to consider the implications of until he had Danny home safe and sound.
Bruce and Alfred wore similar looks to Dick, although Bruce looked more like he was choking on something.
“Dick, maybe you should—” Tim spoke up at the same time Cass started signing “Important.”
“No Tim, we need to talk about this, your guys can handle themselves for a few minutes Jason.”
At least they tried.
“Shit fine, make me break my fucking promise.” He grabbed his helmet and made for the vehicle pad, he kept a bike here exactly for emergencies like this.
Before he could make it far enough though Dick was tackling him again, this time he really fought back, he was not going to let them make him too late to help Danny.
He kicked and punched and genuinely yelled as he was dragged back in and literally tied up.
He was a bat though, and like any good bat he was out of the ropes and running within a few minutes, he made it several feet before he was being shoved back to the ground, handcuffed, and tied up with literal cables.
He yelled. He yelled and screamed and fought for them to let him go. He was honestly banking on them assuming he was having a PTSD or anxiety attack of some kind and letting him go. Honestly he was probably having one for real anyways.
He was going to be too late, he could practically feel the pager vibrating in Dick’s pocket as they attempted to get him to calm down and it was driving him further up the wall, he felt a knot tighten in his chest, core whirring frantically as he panicked. He felt sick, his vision was blurred and splotchy and he could tell he was breathing but it felt like he was drowning. Jason’s skin crawled and burned as he squirmed, to no avail, the restraints around him felt suffocating, like they were shrinking. He was going to be sick. Jason was pretty sure he was crying now, he didn't really care, he couldn’t- Danny was– he was– Dick please—
—“Deep breath Jay, come on, there ya go, deep breath in, deep breath out.”
His eyes refocused and Jason followed Dicks breathing instructions, even as his heart raced faster, his vision was clearing but they were wasting time–
“Shhh, you’re ok, deep breath, I’m sorry we tied you up, you were freaking out a little bit.”
“Let me go”
“Jay—“
“Please, please let me go right fucking now or I swear to god someone is going to get hurt.”
“Jason you’re still—“
“Fuck at least let me call! Please, I need— I need to know- fuck, fuck please”
He was begging, he knew he was, he felt so out of it now, everything blurring as he asked again, eventually the handcuffs around his wrists were removed and he was given the pager, he had never pressed the call button faster.
It rang an agonizing three times before Soul picked up, out of breath and obviously still fighting, “Hood? Where are you? Fuck there’s so many— “ he cut off to run and the other end went quiet for a moment as the device was lowered from his ear.
When Danny’s voice came back through he was breathing harder than before and his voice sounded worn.
“Fuck, Hood, no time, how fast can you get here?”
“Soul, crap I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, I’m a little tied up right now are you ok? I can try to hurry but the bats have me literally tied up in the cave, and I might’ve had another panic attack, where are you?”
“Yeah, ok, that’s a good excuse I guess, you’re forgiven, not to gloss over that, but if you could get out or send someone that would be really great, I don’t know how much longer I can— shit they really come out of nowhere, listen I’m on Fourth and Gains and I- Aghhk, shit! Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck”
“Soul? Soulbird are you hit? Fuck”
“Ok, ok, I’m ok,” he hissed in pain and Jason’s skin crawled, he was too late, Danny was hurt, “fuck, there’s no way I’m outrunning them right now, but I finally triangulated their closest base, sending you the location now,”
“No Da– Soul, you can’t– they can’t get you like this,”
“I know, kinda pathetic right? It’s ok, I know you’ve got me, there’s the location, I’ll do my best to keep my trackers online, love you, see you so— ah shit–“ his voice cut off with a thud, presumably the phone getting thrown to the ground, before Jason could even respond.
He hung up, they had him now and Jason had to get him back. He found the location and pulled it up, luckily Danny’s tracker was currently still online as well. Shit they were moving fast.
He looked up at the grim faces of his family, about to start begging for freedom again, when Barbara’s blessed voice spilled from the speakers,
“Hey guys, as fun as this has been to watch, Hood definitely needs to go, now. I’m finding him Jay”
God he loved her.
Dick and Bruce still looked somewhat reluctant, doubt likely made worse by the fact that Jason was still shaking from whatever kind of attack he’d just had and probably looked extra homicidal by now, but those freaks took his boyfriend and he’d be damned if anything else happened to him tonight.
Thankfully Tim had already been moving to free him, with Alfred and Duke at his heels.
“Jason maybe you should wait a minute, you’re still a little shaky, we can—”
“No Dick. He needed to go the first time he said he did. I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention Jay, both of his trackers are still online but they’re moving fast, I don’t know if you can catch them before they reach their destination but that’s your easiest shot at getting him out. I’m sending the route to your devices”
He stood quickly once he was fully able, moving around the cave to collect his things and then some.
“Thank you, Oracle, you’re forgiven, give me the details once I’m on my way,”
“Sure, hurry.
Bruce almost looked prepared to try and stop him again, and every stressor of the evening came to a full stop as Jason cut him off.
“I swear to the ancients I’m going to kick your ass a new time for every wound he has, and so help you god if he dies, or worse, even I don’t know what I’d do but I doubt I’ll come back from it any sort of whole. This is not how you have conversations, maybe next time you wanna talk to me you try listening first, or asking.”
He made his way to the vehicle pad swiftly, several other members trailing behind him quietly, either as moral support or in case he needed anything else.
“We could help you, you know, I’ll come with you Jason, just tell me what’s going on on the way.”
“Sorry Timmers, this isn’t your guy’s fight, I can handle it, thanks though…if I need backup, I’ll call.”
He popped his helmet on, swung onto his bike and tore through the tunnels.
Warning: Slightly smutty (they makeout and get off)
Part 1
Part 2-
Jason’s breath hitched as he was gently pushed against the wall, and sighed as soft lips pressed into his a moment later, a knee slotting between his and hands slowly roaming his shoulders and sides.
He eagerly pressed into it, he had been waiting for this, after all, for weeks now.
Danny had in fact texted him, and unfortunately they’d both been busy the last two weeks since the flight, but they had finally gotten a date planned. Danny picked him up and took him out to dinner at a decently nice place for someone on an almost full ride scholarship. Jason tried to pay for dinner instead and Danny told him he could pay next time. A trade off. And a seamless invitation for more dates.
It was great. The food was delicious and the restaurant was cozy and surprisingly quiet. Their conversations were light and comfortable. Afterwards they found a dessert shop and got gelato and walked around the small shopping center they were in. (And if Jason had the hand that wasn’t holding Danny’s on his gun for most of the walk that was nobody’s business)
And now, finally, they were back at Danny’s place. A cute little two bedroom apartment that absolutely screamed Danny, despite Jason only catching a glimpse before the alpha’s surprisingly strong hands were pressing him to the wall near the entryway.
Anyway Jason was in heaven.
He kissed back as the pace of the kiss changed and when they broke for air Danny ducked to kiss at Jason’s jaw, and Jason let his hands wander up until he found Danny’s scent blockers, picking at them with a disappointed grunt.
Danny chuckled and peered back up at him with a glimmer in his eye before guiding Jason’s hands away from his neck and leaning up to kiss him again. Danny brought a hand to the back of Jason’s neck and he felt his stomach drop out pleasantly at the implication of getting scruffed again, exactly the way he’d wanted to.
Would that be considered a kink? Probably.
Unfortunately, Danny just grinned into the kiss and moved his hand away without actually squeezing, and Jason almost whined outright. He barely held it in.
This was probably bad. How was he already reduced to such a state with just a little kissing. I mean, sure it’d been a while since the last time he’d had sex, and he wasn’t exactly used to being the one getting pushed against a wall, that was usually his job. But still.
Danny’s thigh pressed in harder along with his lips and Jason pressed back.
He felt Danny’s tongue slip out of his mouth and opened his own in allowance, a delighted shiver running down his spine when Danny’s tongue slotted into his mouth. He let Danny control it for a minute before he responded, and then they were fully making out against Danny’s wall.
Jason was in heaven.
He found his way back to picking at Danny’s patches and this time he did whine a little when Danny pulled away to chuckle and remove his hands again.
“You enjoying yourself? If I take mine off I want yours off too, fair?”
Jason reached up and peeled his own off easily, watching as Danny grinned and pulled his own off. He plucked Jason’s out of his hand, peeling off one of his wrist patches as he did, and slipped away to put them on the counter, leaving Jason leaning up against a wall with jelly legs and heart eyes.
Yeah this was really bad. but it was so so good too.
“Here give me your coat, we may as well get more comfortable, yeah?”
Jason obediently handed his jacket over and watched as Danny went to hang it up next to his, openly admiring the man’s body.
“Come on, let’s move to the couch. Can I get you anything? Tea? Water? Coffee? Or would you rather just keep making out?”
“…keep making out. Maybe tea later, but definitely keep making out”
Danny laughed brightly and took his hand, guiding him to the living room. Surprisingly Danny sat down first and gestured for Jason to either straddle him or sit beside him. Jason almost just sank to his knees in front of him but chose to carefully settle on his lap instead.
It was– it was nice, to be honest. Despite Jason being bigger it was comfortable, and made him feel…well, made him feel good yes, but also so much like an omega—a proper omega—it felt strange.
Danny should be sitting on his lap right now. He’s probably crushing him like this.
But Danny just leaned up and pressed a nose to Jason’s gland, then a kiss, before tilting his head down and kissing him.
“This ok?”
“Yes yeah, it’s…it’s nice, are you ok? I know I’m—“
“Yeah, I’m all good, I’m great Jason”
“Ok. Ok great”
“What do you want? I mean like, out of the whole night? Boundaries, expectations, you know. and for the record I’m not gonna treat this like a hookup, no matter what you want to do or how far we end up going. I’ll still want to see you again later. You owe me a date too”
“I um— I don’t think I want to like, fuck tonight. I mean it’s the first date, and to be honest I have scars and shit that I don’t love people seeing…it might be a while before…not that I don’t want to, I just already feel kind of out of my depth here.”
“Sure ok, that’s fine, we can make out some more and watch a movie or something? And just so you know I have scars too, obviously I respect that boundary and insecurity, but when you do let me see, I promise it won’t be a problem”
“…I believe you. Make out and movie sounds great”
“Ok good, then let’s get back to kissing, you’re really good at it”
“Mmph” Jason sighed as Danny pulled him back into a kiss, tongues sliding together easily again. Jason shifted on his lap and pressed closer, enjoying the warmth between their bodies, the heat spreading through his skin and stomach, and the tingles Danny’s roaming hands left in their wake.
Danny's hands dropped to his thighs and smoothed up towards his body and Jason felt the heat grow immediately, stomach tensing as his dick twitched and a wash of slick ended up in his boxers, sticky when he shifted. He wanted more.
He pulled back to breath and ducked to take advantage of the missing scent blockers, pressing his nose in before kissing and nipping. He pulled Danny’s shirt collar down so he could drop a hickey on his collarbone and he hummed at the shiver he got out of that. He hummed again when Danny’s hand found his scruff, heavy and warm and perfect.
This time when he pressed into it eagerly, Danny obliged, scruffing him like he had on the plane only a thousand times better, Jason did purr this time as he nuzzled into his neck, melting into it. Danny’s amused hum and answering rumble settled into his skin, another rush of wet left him and when he shifted his hips he could feel Danny’s hard on pressed against his crotch.
If it wasn’t a kink before it definitely was now.
Danny released his neck and drew him back up into a kiss, and this time when he slipped their tongues together Jason rocked down, grinding into Danny. Danny grunted softly and grabbed his hips, pulling him closer, strength Jason hadn’t expected once again making an appearance as they made out. The kissing grew faster then, needier, and after a bit longer Danny was rocking his hips into Jason too, grinding and kissing and touching and god it was amazing. Jason hadn’t felt this good in a while, especially when Danny pulled away, grabbed his hips, and ground up hard, bulge brushing not just his omega chub, but putting pleasant pressure on his cunt too as he nibbled at Jason’s jaw and pulse point.
He rocked up until Jason thought he was about to cum in his pants about it, then he slowed down a bit and started kissing him again, a hand on his ass pulled him closer, earning a grunt and a little trilling purr.
Jason squirmed a bit and Danny pulled back with a low chuckle that set Jason’s blood on fire. “You’re not used to this are you? Too used to being in charge hm?”
He nuzzled into Jason's neck and licked a teasing stripe up the side of his throat to his ear. He pressed some open mouth kisses to the spot just below Jason’s earlobe as his hands shifted to his waist, guiding him to grind down properly again. Danny nipped at his scent gland and left hickeys on his collar bone before coming back up for more kisses. They stayed like that for a while, lazy kissing and grinding and touching until they both had enough. The next time Danny scruffed him, Jason came in his jeans, Danny apparently not far behind, the two of them rocking against each other through the ends of their orgasms and laughing softly as they collapsed into each other, like teenagers. Jason wanted to stay there forever, warm and sated in Danny’s lap, but eventually he started getting uncomfortable. Danny kissed him slowly and offered him a shower and a change of clothes, which he happily accepted.
When he came out Danny was back on the couch, also showered and changed, and Jason sat back down beside him with a sigh.
“Hey, feel better?”
“Yeah, thank you, I feel great.”
“Good, I’m glad…ok, option time, it's been a long day, so if you want to just go home, that's fine, or we could still watch a movie”
Jason groaned as he stretched, “mm movie, I don't want to go home yet.”
“Ok! Ok great, what do you want to watch?”
“Uhhh, anything? I don’t know. You pick”
Danny did pick, some random lighthearted animated movie. He went and got them snacks and started the movie, and the longer it played the closer Jason got to Danny, slowly wilting into him. Soon enough Danny was stretched out long ways on the couch, Jason on top of him, pillowed on his chest and wrapped in his arms, scent, and warmth. It was heaven. He didn’t even know when he fell asleep, only that he woke up to Danny settling him into a bed and pulling him close, and then again to sunlight streaming through the blinds, warm arms around him and the best night of sleep he'd had in a while behind him.
Jason made them breakfast and Danny drove him home, dropping him off with a kiss and plans for date two. Jason was a little scared of how amazing the date was, of how amazing Danny was so far. More than anything he was afraid of how good he felt after.
Of course this was immediately dashed by who was sitting in his living room when he got home.
Jason hated flying. No matter how many times he did it, it made him feel sick.
Especially things like take off, landing, and turbulence.
Now usually he would have a family member or a friend with him, usually they used the bat plane, or a justice league plane or spaceship. Even Bruce’s private jets were pretty smooth, less scary.
But he was flying commercial today. By himself, sat in the aisle seat next to a stranger.
The plane had been delayed 45 minutes now because the pilots got delayed on their last flight, and the longer they sat the more the anxiety and anticipation grew.
Thank god he’d worn scent patches. Thank god almost everyone wore scent patches. He was starting to become convinced his neighbor would be able to smell his stress anyway and that was just making him self conscious, which was making him more anxious. Not good. Why was he doing this again?
Because he needed to get home that’s why. He’d been visiting Roy and Lian, and usually he’d just use Zeta tubes, but they were having maintenance done this week and were only being used for actual hero business and emergencies, so he had to fly home now.
Maybe he should’ve just extended his trip until they were back online.
They finally started moving with the taxi, slowly making their way to the runway after an hour of waiting in the most uncomfortable airplane seats Jason has ever had the displeasure of sitting in, and his pulse spikes. Hands shaking.
It’s so stupid. He shoots and fights people for a living, he risks his life constantly. He does way scarier stuff on the daily without flinching. He should be able to handle airplanes. He should be fine.
It’s not like he even has any trauma or anything. (Regardless of the fact that he took a commercial plane just like this to Ethiopia and hit insane turbulence all the way there. Regardless of the fact the plane lurching made his heart race and his stomach drop the same way the Joker did. It's probably not anything to do with any of his trauma at all).
The guy across the aisle laughed obnoxiously at something on his phone and Jason’s head throbbed with the noise, adrenaline, and strange scents. His senses had gotten stronger after being in Nanda Parbat, between the lazarus pit and assassin training, which was just another reason planes and airports were his worst enemy.
He was pretty sure they were getting set down on the runway, and he lifted a hand to his neck preemptively. He’s not sure when he figured out he could kind of scruff himself to calm himself down, but he’d be damned if he wasn’t going to abuse the trick.
There was a kid with a nasty cough a few rows up that made him wish he’d worn a face mask or something. Someone’s baby was already crying in the back and someone had food that smelled weird.
They finally started moving, speeding up for take off, and Jason ducked his head a little and grasped the back of his neck, letting the weight and pressure of the motion settle him slightly as they pick up speed, the sound of the engines grating and the rumble of the plane—the seat, the floor—rattles through him.
He’d just closed his eyes when he felt fingers brush the hand on his neck and smelled a surprisingly soothing alpha scent. He glanced up to see the man in the middle seat beside him looking at him with a concentrated, but worried furrowed brow as he batted Jason’s hand away from his own scruff. For some reason Jason let him, and after his hand was moved the man took up the job, pinching the back of his neck perfectly and letting Jason go limp into his seat as they shakily lifted into the air and started climbing.
It was so perfect he nearly purred, and the combination of surprise, comfort, and instinct had Jason completely forgetting about his aerophobia for a moment.
Once they were steadier in the air and flying smoothly the guy let go, and Jason took a breath before looking at him.
“You ok man?” The stranger asked, settling back into his own seat.
“Yeah, uh thanks for that.”
“For sure. I have a friend who’s terrified of flying, like has to be dragged onto the plane, and he always makes me do that kinda thing for him too.”
Now that Jason’s looking at him with a clear mind, the guy is cute. Like really cute, pretty even, especially for an alpha. He’s not bulky but he is tall, his knees just slightly encroaching on Jason’s space, as usually happens on crowded flights. Slightly muscular, something of a swimmers build, but not a stereotypical alpha, he was fit in a way that Jason liked, not hulking, just enough muscle to get whatever job he does with it done. He had a unique scent too, cool and minty, slightly earthy almost, like a garden after rain. Although Jason couldn’t really smell it anymore, he liked it, it was nice.
Not to mention the scruff? That was hot as fuck, not that he’s had many, but that may be the best scruff Jason’s ever had. His mom did it infrequently, and Bruce only did it when he was either really scared, or really in trouble when he was a teen. Most alphas don’t bother with him because of his build, and the few that do are typically hookups who aren’t really focused on things like scruffing and affection.
But this random guy just, did it, just like that, cause Jason looked scared.
“I’m Danny by the way”
“Jason,” he held a hand out and the guy took it to shake. His hand was cold and his grip was easy, not crushing or dominating.
“Nice to meet you,” pretty smile: check.
“You too.”
“Are you from Gotham or visiting?” polite and sociable: check.
“I’m from Gotham, coming home from visiting Star, what about you?”
“Oh nice ok, I’m going to school in Gotham. My sister lives in Star though, and I get a longer break than her so I went out there.” Talkative?: check.
“Oh ok, nice, GU?”
“Yup,” he answered wryly. Funny?: check.
Jason chuckled at his dry tone and face. “You like it?”
“It’s ok, I mean it’s still Gotham, but the campus is nice, and I’m getting a fat scholarship. Plus the program I’m in is pretty good compared to some other schools so, yeah I like it well enough. I’ve never really loved school to begin with though so that makes me biased”
“Ha fair enough, I’ve been considering starting some classes there but I don’t know yet.”
“Oh really? Wait, how old are you?”
“22, a little old I know, but it was always the goal, I just didn’t quite get to it ya know?”
“Oh cool ok, I’m 21, just turned haha. I don’t think that’s too old, I’ve seen people over, like, 40 in some classes and stuff, you’d be fine.”
“You think so?”
“Yeah, I think if you want to and you have the time and means you may as well.”
“Maybe I’ll look into it some more when I get home…”
Danny smiled brightly and Jason had to fight not to picture him smiling at Jason like that while holding him down and scruffing him. He failed.
“Where are you from originally? Gotham doesn’t get many transplants in it for fun, it takes a certain type.”
“Oh I’m sure. Illinois, middle of nowhere, moved out when my sister got an apartment when I was 17ish.”
“Damn. Midwest. Interesting,” Jason noted, Illinois was kind of far to end up in Gotham.
“Yup. I like to claim Star as home more though. It feels more like home, well, my sister feels more like home.”
“Yeah I get that. Parents,” Jason sighed sarcastically.
“Parents,” Danny agreed in the same tone. They both laughed.
They chatted a bit more through the flight, but it shifted when they started hitting turbulence about an hour in. It didn’t start off too bad, just a few bumps, but then it got rough enough the seat belt sign flicked on and someone over the intercom was warning everyone to remain seated and buckled.
Jason flinched at a particularly lurching spot, and suddenly there was a hand on his neck again. He pressed into it, despite the blush that it brought to his face and the heat it shot through him, and released a shaky breath as Danny’s hand pressed into his scruff again.
They spent the rest of the flight like that, Danny easily and instinctively scruffing him, touching him, off and on when they hit rough patches. In between they chatted, every once in a while doing their own thing and falling quiet. Danny was reading a book and at some point Jason had started reading along, Danny easily shifting so he could see.
Somehow at some point he ended up half asleep with his head on Danny’s shoulder and when he fully came too Danny had his phone in one hand playing a game and his other hand resting against Jason’s neck, fingers idly playing with the ends of his hair.
He didn’t really want to wake up yet actually.
The intercom had just come on to tell them they were heading into their final descent when Danny turned to him with a smile, pulling his phone out.
“Can I get your number? Pretty please? I’d like to see you again.”
Jason’s first response was to say ‘yes absolutely’ and snatch the phone to enter his info, but then he remembered who he was, and who he was talking to.
Him, an oversized, built like a brick wall omega, and the most gorgeous alpha he’d ever seen.
“…you should know I’m an omega.”
Danny just laughed, “yes, I gathered from the way you melted the first time. Plus your scent leaked through your patches when you first got super freaked out.”
“Oh.” Jason said like an idiot.
“I’d still like your number, and to see you again. And to clarify when I see you again it will be to take you on a date, hopefully. Assuming that’s ok with you.”
“I— yeah. Ok, yes.”
Danny chuckled as Jason gingerly took his phone and typed into it, entering his number and his name. He watched avidly as Danny took it back, smiled, and added emojis to his contact name.
He scruffed him one last time as they hit the usual Gotham turbulence and Jason let himself fully melt into it again.
They sat and waited and shuffled off the plane together, and unfortunately they were going different directions when they got out, but Danny took his hand and squeezed before he walked away, leaving Jason with a kiss to his knuckles and an easy “I’ll text you” that left Jason standing like a fool in the middle of the airport for a few minutes.
Apparently he was still blushing when he got in the car because Dick, who had insisted on coming to pick him up, gave him a signature raised brow, teasing smirk combo.
Jason brushed it off. Like hell was he telling his older brother he let a stranger scruff him for half the flight and got his number afterward. He'd get protective and naggy and Dick-y.
Not that Jason would really blame him. This was a potentially dangerous situation. An unknown alpha, touching Jason so casually, Jason letting him for some reason. It was risky. It was weird. People were afraid of Jason. He was big and scarred and mean. People avoided him. It was odd.
And yet, despite the oddity and the risk, Jason found himself thinking that maybe flying wasn’t so bad after all.
It was a good night too, the sky was about as clear as it got in Gotham and there was a nice breeze that ensured he wasn’t overheating, though he had ended up stripping his jacket off pretty quick after starting.
He had, so far, only run into small incidents, and had mostly been checking in with his people while Soul handled the majority of those.
Everything had been ok with his team and his working girls, and for now the night had been—dare he say—quiet.
He paged Soulbird for their usual check in and waited for the comms to open.
“Hey Hood, all good here. Been—that which will not be named—all evening, couple of muggings and trades here and there but I got it handled, how’s it look on your end?”
“The same, checked in with the usuals, everythin’s all clear, ‘sides from a couple more reported sightin’s of the douches in white but sounds like they’ve been lying low since our last run.”
“Alright, I’m gonna keep moving then, see you in a bit.”
“Ok, be careful, I don’t trust it yet, our luck combined is too shitty for a night this good…”
“Haha, that’s for sure, I’ll be fine, you watch out too, b-t-dubs the bats seem antsy tonight and I caught a couple too close to the edge already, they might know something we don’t?”
“Ugh ok, I’ll check in with O real quick, see if she knows anything, thanks for the heads up, I think I’d know by now if somethin’ was goin’ down but-”
“Never hurts! Ope, just heard something a few streets over, love you babe I’ll see you later, kisses”
“Love you,”
Jason sighed as his comm clicked back off, letting himself smile for a moment before paging Babs, man it was a good night, she opened comms almost immediately, and Jason took back everything he said about a good night because he could hear her smirk through the earpiece.
“So, ‘babe’, what did you need?”
“Fuck. I told him not to say stuff like that over comms and you’re the reason for that rule.”
“Glad to know I inspire such caution, anyways you wanted to know what the creepers are up to right?”
“Yeah, Soul said they were antsy, and close.”
“Hmm, we’ll they’re not wrong, they are close, I think I’ll let them tell you why they’re antsy themselves though.”
“O wha-”
The comm clicked off at the same moment that Jason was getting tackled to the roof by Nightwing, quickly followed by Red Robin, dogpile style.
They worked to flip him on his back and pin him, and though he could probably fight them off, he was trying to better about hurting his family and he had a feeling he would not be able to control his strength very well in his current position.
He squirmed for all it was worth though.
Once he stopped moving they both sighed in relief and Batman, in the flesh, appeared to hover over him.
“What the fuck?”
“Sorry Jason, this is an intervention” Dick solemnly informed him. Hell he even looked remorseful, no matter how played up it was for the joke.
“A fucking what? For what? What did I do this time??”
Batman grunted once, looked at Dick, and suddenly Jason was being hauled to his feet and marched towards where the car must be parked.
He dug his heels into the roof and attempted to shake their grip but then Batman was behind him pushing him forwards as the other two pulled.
“Don’t- don’t I get a phone call??”
“Tt, you’re not going to prison Todd” and the demon has appeared, great.
“That’s what it fucking feels like!”
Apparently now that the baby was here he couldn’t say that word, as at least three different voices chided: “Language,” including Alfred over comms.
“Alf- agent A? I thought I could trust you??”
“Ouch, betrayal”
“Shut it baby bird, can I at least drive on my own? I don't wanna leave my bike, but I pinky-promise I’ll come back to the cave with you.”
They promptly stopped walking, Dick and Tim both swiveling around with pinkies raised.
Jason sighed, raising his own and locking both into theirs at the same time. The two grinned at him with a vigor he could only imagine having lately as they dropped their iron grips and ran off. Bruce stayed only long enough to nudge him from behind before following the others to their stashed vehicles, occasionally one of them would look back to double check he was actually moving, Damian stayed behind him the entire way.
He had pinky promised, and he was curious anyways, Danny could handle himself, though he should probably give him a heads up, maybe tell him to finish up for the night since he'd be lacking backup…
He paused astride his bike to page Danny while she warmed up a bit, and was quickly met with a katana poking into his back.
“Keep moving Todd, we are already running behind, and you promised.”
“I know I know, I’m going baby bat, I gotta make sure my guys know I’ll be out for a bit.”
“Tt, you can do that at the cave.”
Jason doubted he could but the blade pushed further against his kevlar the longer they waited there and he made the wise decision to start moving, slipping his patrol pager away and shifting to put up the kickstand. While he knew Damian wouldn’t actually stab him (probably) he was still better safe than sorry.
They made it to the cave soon after and he was beginning to regret being curious. The meeting table was all set up and everyone was there, including Duke (he needs to go to bed!!) and Alfred.
As he entered the cave every pair of eyes in the room turned to him and he wouldn’t be surprised if the actual bats on the ceiling were staring too.
He chuckled awkwardly as he made his way to the table, noting the only saving grace: Alfred had made cookies.
He snagged the plate as he moved to sit next to Duke and, coincidentally, across from Cass. Screw it, this was his intervention, they were his cookies and his favorite siblings.
He sat down and let Duke and Cass steal a cookie, “Duke, dude, the hell are you doin’ up right now narrows?”
Duke shrugged, chewing his cookie in thought, “I was curious, they said they were staging an intervention and I wanted the context, plus I don’t have anything going on tomorrow that I need to be particularly awake for.”
Jason pulled his helmet off so his disappointed-concern face would have the full effect, Duke, for his part, looked effectively cowed but did not even glance at the elevator.
Jason sighed, running a hand through his hair as he turned back to face the room, “can we get this thing started then? I have shi-stuff to finish up tonight”
“I don’t know ‘babe’, do you even know what we’re starting?”
Thiiss…was gonna be a long night. He saw Dick mouth ‘babe?’ Across the table as he sat down, grabbing for the cookies that Jason shoved further away, his intervention, his cookies.
“No, I don’t know what it is but I figure the sooner we start the sooner we finish and I can go back to my job”
Babs snickered, he hated when she had fresh blackmail, ignoring it was the best method for now, though he would likely regret that.
“Ah yes, your ‘job’, we should probably let you get back to that, in that case, Bruce, why don’t you start us off”
He gracefully resisted the urge to groan at her teasing and decided to focus on the confusion it was causing the rest of his family.
“Hm. Jason, we– I, have noticed you growing distant lately, I’ve been worried that you’re pulling away again and Dick agreed. So we wanted to talk, check in.”
Jaosn snorted softly, “so you kidnapped me?”
“Ha, yeah”
He shot a look at Tim and immediately backed off when Alfred shot him a worse one, he silently slid the cookie plate to the baby bird as Dick took up the lead on conversation.
“So, now that you’re here, what’s up? It feels like it’s been awhile since you’ve properly checked in”
That just wasn’t true, it’s been awhile since they’ve checked in with him, he’s checked in as much as he's been around, which has been admittedly very little lately but that doesn’t make the lack of communication completely his fault.
“Honestly? A lot, been busy mostly, hence the lack of communication, was off-world for about a month working on some stuff, and then I was out of the country and state even longer trying to deal with a whole other situation, but I’ve been good, just busy.”
This was his favorite game, emotional manipulation with the bat family, they guilt trip him, he gaslights them, it’s a cycle, a nice stable pattern.
Currently he was playing: let me open up about one thing so I don’t have to about anything else, they were playing: where have you been, young man? You don’t call, you don’t write…
“Oh ok, how was your mission? Er, missions?”
“Fine. Tiring. Glad to be home. It was just a lot of work, and we were gone for so long, it was starting to drain me. I've got a decent break now though, hopefully at least.”
Before Dick could ask anymore questions Bruce spoke up, “I knew about the off world mission, but what else did you have after? You were meant to return immediately once it was over. And the rest of your team did.”
Ah, great, a hard question, ancients this was gonna be a long night.
Danny looked up at the door in front of him with dread and nearly considered turning back when an image flashed through his head to remind him why he was here.
He was staring down the barrel of a bulky silver gun at a faceless woman with short red hair. Her finger moved and Danny squeezed his eyes shut to avoid seeing it play out again.
After calming himself down he returned his thoughts to the door, shaky and completely ready to run at the first signs of plotting, he rings the doorbell.
After a few moments he can hear clamoring and footsteps before they stop right in front of the door, several locks click and Vlad finally opened the door to an exhausted, tense, somewhat crying Danny Fenton.
Vlad only let his surprise show for a moment before it turned to honest concern as he ushered him inside, he sat Danny down in a cozy sitting room and disappeared into what could only be the kitchen.
Vlad returned a moment later with two steaming mugs, he set one in front of Danny before standing above him and staring down.
Danny hesitantly looks up at Vlad, screwing his face up to portray his confusion. Vlad gave him that squinty, sort of pouty concern again before signing and kneeling down to look Danny in the eye.
“Are you hurt anywhere?”
Danny shook his head, “Not hurt. Just tired” and lost.
Vlad studied him, obviously looking for a lie, before huffing slightly and standing up again upon finding no tells that it wasn’t the truth, he moved and sat carefully next to Danny, gently setting his own mug down beside the boy’s and turning to look at him.
Danny looked back. Vlad sighed, “I’m not going to hurt you, little badger, I promise you’ll be safe here”
He spoke softly and though Danny should know better he couldn’t help but trust it. He felt his exhaustion catching up, and all of his anxiety and … slowing down and suddenly he was just tired. And sad.
He felt his chest heave and tears start slipping down his face as Vlad reached out to him.
Hesitantly the man put a hand on his shoulder and pulled him closer when Danny leaned into it. Danny sobbed against him for a while until he wore himself out and Vlad guided him to a room. He promptly passed out on the bed, tears drying slowly. He slept all night for the first time in who knows how long.
——————————
Danny woke up sore and still tired, he slowly came back to awareness and barely avoided panic as everything registered.
He slowly dragged himself out of the bed and to the bathroom to wash his face. Once he felt more awake and clean he slipped out of the room and down the hall to the stairs.
He found the kitchen and consequently Vlad in the kitchen, he only hoped the man was better at cooking than his— the Fentons as he watched him stir something on the stove.
As Danny inched further into the room Vlad caught onto his presence and slowly turned to face him with a soft smile.
Danny looked up at him owlishly as Vlad used his head to gesture Danny to the seats at the counter before returning to the pan.
Danny slunk to the counter and sat down, fiddling with his sleeves and zoning out on the nice countertops.
Soon Vlad was playing food and setting it down in front of him, slowly sliding it into his field of vision. Danny’s eyes refocused to a plate of warm food, a fried egg, hashbrowns and toast.
He slowly sat up and reached for the utensils placed with it as Vlad took a seat next to him with a similar plate and a mug of coffee.
They ate in silence and Vlad directed him to the game/tv room before he left for work.
It was nice, peaceful. Vlad told him not to worry about ghosts for a bit. It stressed Danny out to no end but he was still happy to take the break.
At some point he had made his way back to his room for a nap. It was warm and quiet and he was so so tired.
——————————
One month later
It had been a month since Danny had run to Vlad and Danny has been 18 for two weeks now which meant his parents couldn’t touch him.
Vlad had taken him (and the cops) to go get what he wanted from the Fenton house, luckily they hadn’t been home. They had been trying to reach him though, claiming they missed their son, they missed him alright, or Danny wouldn’t be nearly as whole as he is.
So now he had his things. And his life. And a guaranteed room in Vlad’s mansion and his castle in Wisconsin.
Vlad had pulled him out of school for his last semester so he could try and catch up online a little bit before graduation. Which meant he didn’t really see Sam and Tuck anymore but they met up when they could and called.
Danny and Vlad had been in Wisconsin for a few weeks now, they were both in need of a break so they left Amity, Red had it covered and Danny had been somewhat succeeding in moderating the ghosts so only smaller animals and less destructive beings slipped through without permission.
Danny took a deep breath as he finished up the last of his school work for the week, now that he has time and could work at his own pace he was excelling.
He was on track to graduate early (though he wouldn’t) and he had started taking some preliminary college courses in his free time as well, which he had a lot of.
Danny was thriving.
Vlad knocked on his door.
“Hey, we’re going to a thing this weekend, we both need to get out of the house— err castle.”
Danny snickered, he did feel cooped up though, “what’s the thing? And where?”
“We’re going whether—“ He began “no I know, just curious.”
“Ah, ok, it’s a business party of sorts, for networking and all such efforts, it will be in Chicago I think, or was it Gotham…?”
“Uhh that’s a pretty big difference in location, and an important distinction, I’m down to hit up the crown city of crime but I’d like to be prepared first thank you.” Danny chuckled
Vlad hummed before he came to his final decision, “I think it must be Chicago, I would have remembered for sure if it was Gotham, I shall check nonetheless but I’m nearly 90% certain it’s Chicago. I’ll be right back,” was the last thing Vlad declared as he turned back out of Danny’s room and left to find a device with whatever email or such he had received about it.
Danny laughed to himself at the man’s antics before he got back, he considered the idea of the event more, a rich people ‘networking’ party. Mannn that sounds like a blast he thought sarcastically.
Was he gonna have to wear a suit??
Before he could think anymore Vlad reappeared with his phone and a tablet open looking through it.
“Ah here we go,” he muttered to himself before looking back at Danny, “it’s Chicago, it’s more of a rich people event than business, and it sounds like some younger people have been invited, so maybe some kids around your age…” he trailed off as he scrolled through more, Danny just gave him a look,
“I’m not technically a kid anymore.”
“Hush…it’s formal attire, we’ll have to get you a suit, I’ll take you to my tailor and pick you something nice…there will be food and refreshments but no full meal, good that means we won’t be forced to sit at a table and eat with a bunch of people…”
He trailed off again as he kept looking through it. He hummed softly as he took in information and Danny grabbed his phone as he felt it buzz
Sammy Wammy ;3
Sam
Hey can you call rn?
Danny
Give me a minute
Vlad and I are discussing stuff
Sam
Ok cool text me when ur good!
Danny
Will Do! <33
He quickly texted Sam back as Vlad started talking again
“I just got a flight set up, the gala is on Saturday evening but our flight is Friday morning, we’ll get there and have some extra time to recover before hand… the hotel is provided with the invite so it’s easy and close, I already put in for our room so all we have to do is check in on Friday when we get there…”
He hummed as he looked over what Danny assumed to be either a checklist or just notes, “you should start packing either tonight or tomorrow, I’ll call my tailor and we can go in tomorrow so start thinking about what you want, I’ll help you with that in a moment, I have some thoughts on color and style to suggest but ultimately Jacie will help tomorrow as well…we’ll get shoes and accessories then as well so for now…”
He looked through the list again, a slight furrow in his eyebrows as he went through what they needed to do in the next two days before the trip
“Hum, I think those are the biggest points, I’m not too concerned about your manners or anything, just be you and the rich people can suck it if they’re miffed,” Danny sputtered, “you know you’re a rich person too right? You fit right in with all those gala folks…”
Vlad turned a look on him, “that doesn’t mean I have to like them, or like myself for that matter, I despise these events becuase of the image I am forced to portray, you, my young, vulnerable Danny, have no image to your name yet, that means you have complete freedom this weekend, I’d prefer you be respectful and not drag my name but if you do something foolish I will not hesitate to verbally disown you in the face of the situation.”
Danny laughed again, it felt good, had he not been laughing before? “Honestly that’s fair, I won’t do anything stupid though, I’d rather not have a bunch of pissed off rich people on my ass.”
Vlad nodded approvingly before double checking the list, “ah do you have your work done for the week yet?”
“Yep, just finished up before you came in”
“Even your prep work for the college classes?”
“Yep!”
Vlad studied him for a moment, before smiling and nodding, “good, keep that up and you’ll get somewhere with it, I want better for you Danny, you deserve to get further than I ever did, and further away from those bast—“
His eyes glowed a bit as he cut himself off with a snarl, Danny gave him a sad look, he appreciated the anger, honestly, it was nice having someone aside from Sam or Tuck getting angry on his behalf, it was even better having Vlad do it and still stay in control so easily, Danny had stopped getting angry after meeting Dan, the fear of what he might become worse than any rage he felt.
Even though he knew deep down it couldn’t happen again already, he was here with Vlad and he had yet to feel bad enough to ask for half of him to be removed (like a coward) besides, Danny’s Vlad would never agree to such a thing, in fact Danny had made him swear he wouldn’t ever let Danny do that, and he had promised, even though he was confused.
Vlad walked around his bed to pat his shoulder and Danny initiated a loose hug, he appreciated that too, Vlad let him initiate everything and he respected his boundaries so well too. It was nice having someone who acknowledged that he didn’t always want to talk or be touched.
Vlad had made a lot of progress towards redemption in the last couple of years, even more so in the last month, Danny was proud of him, and thankful for the dedication to be better for him

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
Robin woke up slowly, he blinked through the green and opened his eyes to a warmly lit room, as he looked around he realized it was a library, and from the little couch he was asleep on it seemed endless. He got up off the couch and stretched, aiming to explore further, when he was hit with a sharp pain between his eyes, he vision went blurry and dark for a moment before it cleared up and he suddenly remembered where he was.
This was his library, his lair. He had died and now he lived here, he knew he had died so why did it feel so wrong? He began to walk around, eventually finding the door that led to his personal area, the rest of the library was public.
He looked in the mirror he had in the room and usually it was nice to see the Robin suit, clean and undamaged, but now it just felt…off, wrong somehow, like he wasn’t supposed to be wearing it.
He heard a door open and shut somewhere and soft, clicky footsteps that made him feel fuzzy and his head swim with familiarity. He cautiously slipped out of the room, shutting the door behind him and walking back through the shelves until he saw him and froze.
Standing in front of him was a tall young man, he had soft features and kind, tired, eyes that seemed to glow softly. His hair was a celestial white and he was dressed like royalty. Maybe he was royalty. Robin felt another burst of pain as he tried to remember who this was.
When his vision refocused the man was closer, and looking at him like there was something very sad happening, Robin wasn’t sure why he was so sad but he wanted him to stop. There wasn't anything sad here.
“Jason.” The man spoke softly, he had a nice voice, smooth and sad. Why did that name make his head hurt again? Was that his name? Robin figured it was.
The man walked closer to him, and the logical part of Robin’s brain was telling him not to let the unknown man get any closer, however the rest of him was buzzing with warmth and safety. He knew he knew this man, he just couldn’t remember why, he felt familiar in a way that said he wasn’t someone Robin knew in life, but someone he knew in death.
The man stopped in front of him and kneeled down, cupping Robin’s face with his pretty hands, his rings felt cool againt his cheeks and Robin felt safer than he had in probably a long time. It was nice. He liked this man.
But he was looking at him all sad again and he didn’t like that.
“Jason, you’re not supposed to be here”
Robin pulled back slightly, of course he was meant to be here! It was his lair.
“This is my lair, where else am I supposed to be? Who even are you?”
The man smiled softly and moved his hands to robins shoulders, “I know this is your lair, but you’re not supposed to be here right now, you’ve still got a while before you’re supposed to be back here again, you have to go back Jay. They need you.”
Robin didn’t understand, he was dead, he couldn’t ‘go back’
“Please Jace, don’t you see how this is wrong, you’re not Robin anymore, you haven’t been for a while now, this isn't right. They’ve done something to you and I’m sorry I can’t do much more than try to remind you but your family needs help, as much as I miss you, you have to go.”
Rob— Jason felt himself drifting, to where he didn’t know but it was probably wherever the man was telling him to go, he didn’t want to, it was nice here, and he wanted to see the man again, would he get to see him again?
“I promise I’ll come check on you soon, but right now I need you to let go Jason, you’ll see me soon and your lair will always be here waiting for you. Now please, go. I love you, I’ll see you on the other side ok?”
Jason nodded slightly and the man kissed his forehead as everything faded back to black.
——————————
Jason woke up in pain, his head was pounding and his vision was blurry, he couldn’t hear anything but he knew he was mad, he was always mad though wasn't he? The pain finally subsided and his vision began to clear. Something felt wrong, so very wrong, his head was swimming and his body was on fire, itchy, it felt like he was being held under water.
As he got more awareness back he realized his body was moving without him, as his brain slowly caught up he realized he was likely being mind controlled, or possibly possessed? Whatever it was was an invasion of privacy and Red Hood wanted the feeling gone.
So he pulled from the only constant in his life, the rage. The anger that sat deep in his chest and ate away at him but by bit everyday, he pushed and fought against the force holding him down but it wasn’t enough, he let the green take over to try and push the unknown control out of his mind and body, but he only succeeded when his mid suddenly cleared to the image, the memory of a pretty boy with sad, bright, neon green eyes looking up at him.
He burst through the control and finally felt like he could breathe again, his vision was still green and slowly going dark.
He was prepapred to be consumed, to go on a rampage no less damaging than when someone else was in control.
But nothing came, he just froze, his vision stayed green but his body stopped, he felt himself collapse to ground and began to recognize the pain blooming in his limbs and chest.
Everything felt fuzzy and numb until a hand rested on his shoulder.
He followed the hand up an arm to— B, Batman. His dad.
His vision was slipping and his head still pounded, he tried to tell Bruce that he was going to pass out but nothing was coming out of his mouth intelligibly.
Jason felt himself lose control of his body and lurch forward, Bruce’s arms came around him before he could hit the floor and the last thing Jason knew before he fully blacked out was that he was safe. His dad had him.

Just a little snippet/wip of something I’ve been working on! This is just the first little half of the first chapter!!
