                              “I’m listening, I really am, its just not making sense today.” the absolute truth unfortunately, followed by a frustrated sigh as Emmett sank backwards into his chair, one that he appreciated having more than the blonde before him knew. “What do you do when days like this just block everything?” 

Features softened, Savannah having only momentarily forgotten that he was here to learn, her own fault for getting so caught up in the latest stretch of blueprints than she’d anticipated. “Hey, it happens.” She reached out to turn the sheet for her to look at a little more closely, “I step back.” She admitted, “Find something else to focus on, worst case, I just go back to the drawing board, literally. --- Pull out a sketch book and figure out whats blocking me that way. It’s there, I know you know this stuff. Not every day is golden, don’t expect them to be, okay?”

Don’t let me take advantage of that.” spoken in complete sincerity because JD knew exactly how he could be, even when those close to him seemed to forget at times, the wolf gladly entered Savannah’s home that oddly enough felt exactly like that while tapping the side of his jacket lightly as she spoke. “Brought my own, but thanks.” the warm smile that faded quickly from his lips didn’t match the worry that his blue eyes carried and heavily so, something the eldest Darius male knew the witch before him was all too familiar with. “Look — Lawson’s back in town, Sav. Thought it’d be better hearing that from me than randomly seeing him on the street at some stage.”

“You do realize who’s front door you just knocked on, right?” She laughed softly, more than aware that not only did she know JD for most of his nuances, the witch was well and truly accustomed to people taking advantage of her hospitality and kind nature. Something that she’d never considered JD to be guilty of, at least not yet. “I’m not even surprised.” The warm smile she offered as she moved to close the door behind him. There’d never really been much reason for either of them to dance around the truth with one another, they’d known each other far too long for that, however, the constriction of her throat as he quite literally dropped his reasoning for being here on her was more than she expected. Her palm flattening out on the wooden door as she paused for but a moment to try and stop her heart from plummeting through her stomach. “Is he?” Spoken mindlessly as she pushed down the knot in her throat, plastering features with some semblance of a mask. “How’s he doing?” He was right, this was better, knowing was better. It had to be better than the shock of not knowing, only to find such memorable features in the street. “I’ll bet you’re happy to see him, huh. It’s been a while.”

“I just missed them okay?” Better than telling him she’d been avoiding his calls because that would be far too unlike her. As much unlike her as the two empty bottles of wine that sat next to each other on the coffee table above a plethora of grimoires and completely irrelevant blue prints, the witch switching back and forth between the two as if she could fully comprehend much of either at that point in time. “My phone must be dead or something.”

It crossed her mind, without doubt, but JD had gone out of his way to give her some ounce of warning of Lawson’s return, as if he’d somehow known that seeing the shifter would violently jar her already shaky existence. The very least she could have done was tread carefully and really, that had been her intention. Go about her days as if nothing had changed, as if her parents still lingered in the hallways of their family home, as if the hellish state of the town didn’t shift beneath their feet every other day, as if he hadn’t come home at all -- because that was how she’d come to get through each day. Her head held high and without letting the steel like exterior she always made some effort to hold onto slip through her fingers. It was nothing, and he’d likely be gone again before she could even comprehend another of his trips back into the folds of Red Creek. Intention, however, didn’t always win out, something made damningly obvious as she pushed open the door to the cafe she’d agreed to meet Wren in that afternoon only to catch the very same man she’d thought to give space to as their gazes met from across the room. Offering a short smile, she looked around for her brother briefly, seeing that he was clearly not here yet and only then hesitating a moment before she went over, “JD said you were in town, didn’t know whether to believe it or not.”

“I mean it you know, one time thing.” She’d already held her own reservations about giving her younger sister the reigns for a single night. Not in even her most inebriated state would she ever believe it to be a good idea, they were polar opposites, but in retrospect, Savannah only hoped that giving Tatum something to focus on would be some sense of relief in the grand scheme of things. “There are definite things I will not do, but for the most part, tonight is your night, we do --- whatever it is, you want.”

        “She can’t. I’m her slave apparently.” Getting up from the couch to retrieve the remote when it was a mere two inches from her hand was a killer. She’d done stuff like that since they were kids. Needless to say, Tatum was high maintenance. “Once? Sav, come on. It’s not a Fontaine family fun night without Shelby. Her and Ethan are pros at Taboo, you know he won’t play without her. What? What’s she gonna do, throw a feather at us?” The eldest witch’s magic was not up to par with the rest of the siblings’, that much was clear. If a locator spell really irked her as much as Savannah seemed to think it would, well, maybe she’d never come around. “I will. We all took it differently,” their parents’s death. “You can’t make them see it the way we do.” Optimistically, unfortunately. After all this time, finally.

“Why does that not surprise me at all?” Bribery between siblings, how she might have given for that to be the heightened point of mock hostility between any one of them, but a simpler life was not one made for them all. “So you call her then, she’s more likely to answer for you than she is me, you know that. So what if he wont’ play without her, maybe it’ll give someone else the edge they need to win. Would that really be a terrible thing?” The gentle roll of oceanic hues left her sighing quietly to herself. No, of course she never expected Shelby to do anything drastic, though it could be said for any family that things spoken could hurt much more than most actions. “If Shelby wants to be found, it’s not going to take a locator to do it.” Teeth worked over her lesser lip and she intentionally cast eyes to the open window that overlooked the street beyond her home. “I’m not trying to make anyone see if differently.” Her tone shifted, much less open as her shoulders grew rigid in reminder of what seemed to be drawing a line between them. “They’re welcome to see it however they think they should.”

                        “You free?” articulate as ever, JD offered only a slight wrinkling of the left side of his face to accompany his words, because the rest that needed to be said would be followed shortly; it all really depending on the response. 

The ever familiar face adorning her front doorstep was more than enough to elicit a fond smile out of the witch. She’d never consider JD turning up out of the blue as anything but good, even on days where any sense of comment might have lacked it’s usual ethereal banter. “For you, always. Wanna come in? I only just got home, but unless Wren thought to raid my fridge, there should still be something to drink.”

Dead exes that have managed to come back from the dead and run into us when we least fucking expect it?” He asked, rubbing at his eyes before leaning back in his seat. Pupils finally dilated back to their regular size as his high came down, hands already trembling for another hit as he lifted his water bottle filled with vodka to his lips, taking as long as a drink he could while looking at his best friend across from him. It wasn’t her idea to talk about it, Savannah was still trying to wrap her own head around it, because none of it made sense. She’d seen his body, and she’d known him her entire life, and yet somehow.. she’d missed something, and now Kai was back in his own home, as if nothing happened at all. “We don’t have to talk about it --- I think I’d rather if we didn’t.” Kai remembered nothing, and that hurt more than whatever it was she’d missed.

                “You came on a good day — myself and Shelby finally got off our asses and cleaned this place. We literally had dishes stacked for about a week, it was pretty nasty. I had to double up on gloves when cleaning that shit,” she teased before raising her eyebrow at her sister. It wasn’t a total lie, the place had been a mess but mostly with take-out boxes on Tatum’s part. “I’m joking — please, do not fucking take that seriously. Untie the knot in your panties, sis. What’s going on? Need some sex advice? I could teach you how to grapefruit.” ( @xhwitchy )

“Who knew either of you ever had good days.” Savannah chided in a teasing tone, far be it from her to ever really catch either of them in a good mood. But she’d settle. “A week?? Tay.. if I have to come around here and check in on you guys every week, I will.” The thought alone made her skin crawl, her terrible ocd forcing her to wonder about the cleanliness of the counters that lined the kitchen. Though, hearing that it was a joke, the twist between her shoulders lessened, “That’s not even funny and you know it. Wait..-- what? No.. --- No I do not need.. I don’t ever want to know how to do that, but I mean..- thanks for the.. disgusting offer.”

“It’s definitely the most disappointment I’ve felt all week. In my defense, I thought you were joking. But then I took that first bite and all my hope went out the window. How can you actually like these over chocolate? That’s like some sort of crime.”

“I definitely wasn’t joking, and really, I don’t know what I did to make you think I was joking in the first place. They’ve always been my favorite, plus, me and chocolate are not good friends, at all. The only thing criminal is your lack of taste, Gibson.”

He only sighed, giving the various belongings a glare before focusing his full attention on Savannah. “I mean, Tatum looks like a strawberry when I make fun of her. Does that count?” He wondered aloud, meeting her gaze with a grin and a strange chuckle. “Did you call her? We both should — leave her really long, unnecessary voicemails, too. We can annoy her enough to show up, and if not? Locator spell.” It’s all he really wanted, all of them together for a few hours. They hadn’t been since before the fire and, well, needless to say things had drastically changed.

“Yeah, you need to stop doing that. One day you’re going to annoy her so much she’ll combust and take us all with her.” Savannah snorted at the memory of how frustrated Tatum could get when left to the whim of their brother. Relentless as he was. “I..-- left a message, but I only called once.” Which she knew wasn’t really good enough, but for whatever reason, Shelby and her had never really.. clicked. “You want to locator spell our sister? Your funeral.” A haphazard comment that caught her in the chest harder than anticipated after their all too recent loss. Tucking blonde locks behind her ear, she went back to busying herself all too quickly. “I uh.-- you call them. If they come, great if not..-- that’s fine too.”

Kai nodded slowly at her statement, his death was something he tended to leave out of the story when explaining what had happened - there weren’t many that would or were ready to believe that one could cheat death like he had. For he hadn’t merely been dead for a couple of minutes and resuscitated, he had died. His heart had stopped, he had been medically claimed deceased and sent to the morgue for autopsy where he’d woken up cold and naked, and memory-less. But most people who asked where he’d been were not ready to hear that, and so the half lie of an accident had been established - and had there even been a doubt in his mind that she had known him better than most, it was gone in that moment. She knew the truth. 

( “Yeah, and I technically stayed that way for twenty four hours. Freak miracle I guess, that or someone got something very wrong somewhere.” ) He chuckled, though there wasn’t really much funny about any of this, a nervous habit he couldn’t be sure whether he’d always had or picked up over the last few months. ( “Liam uh….he wasn’t so lucky.” ) Kai knew it’d sound somewhat heartless, the lack of tone or emotion in his voice whilst talking about his dead brother, but he didn’t know him - didn’t remember him - it was hard to portray emotion when you did know how you once felt about that person. Though he found it hard to look at her as he answered. ( “Mom and dad know, yeah - I guess they didn’t tell many people…” )

There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that this conversation could already have gone much differently, she could have been more gentle in the things she said, but disbelief and shock perforated her system like a poison and she found herself warring over whether or not any of this was real. Perhaps she was still asleep and her alarm had yet to pierce through her subconscious to pull her back to the dampening reality that Kai Stephens was just one more in a long list of people that she’d lost. “Twenty four..--” And all the time lost inbetween? She wasn’t sure she even wanted to know, every new piece of information he noted to her churned her stomach a little more and fingertips ached to reach for him. Their last conversation had never faded from her mind --- she’d given him all the details he might have ever wanted to know, and every memory that she’d once taken from him back, and he’d never wanted to see her again. It didn’t matter that he claimed to remember everything, she still felt her shoulders deflate lightly as she thought about it.

The lump grew in her throat, knowing that only one brother stood before her, heart beating in his chest where it should have and she could no longer thing of anything beyond the fact that she wasn’t sure how to feel at that point in time. “Oh.” Her voice broke, despite knowing that Liam was likely where he was meant to be once passing on; not alive. It was all too confusing, what she’d known about the Stephens brothers was their innate lack of anything even remotely supernatural, and yet here he stood --- and the truth of any question she asked would merely have made matters worse and thrown him once again into something he knew nothing about. They were at square one; just as she thought she might have been done lying to him. “No.. No I imagine they didn’t.” And if she hadn’t known, she supposed perhaps not many others did, unless she’d some where along the line been deemed irrelevant, despite the entire town being aware of how she’d always felt about Kai. “I should..-- you still need milk.”

If there was ever a time that Kai hated the fact that he’d lost all his memories, it was right now - looking at the pained expression on this beautiful woman’s face he wanted more than ever to have been able to remember her. Sure waking up in the morgue had been terrifying, and not even knowing his own name had been confusing, but watching her almost fall apart in front of him was more painful than any of that. His parents pain had quickly turned into relief, and even though he had wished he remembered them, a parents love was unconditional and they would love him whether he remembered or not - and that made it easier to love them in return. Something told him what ever history he shared with the woman before him, it wasn’t going to be that easy. ( “Did you need to sit down?” ) He asked, gesturing to the chair on his porch. 

He’d glanced back over his shoulder at the furniture he’d been offering to her but his head had snapped back immediately when she spoke his name. He wasn’t sure why it had been such a shock to hear her speak his name, he’d already figured that she knew him - but it had caught him like a lightening bolt, and the shiver than ran down his spine was unforgettable. ( “I uh… wouldn’t be offended if I were you. I don’t remember anything - or anyone.” ) Kai scratched at the back on his neck, suddenly more awkward than he’d been since he’d returned to town. Explaining his situation had become second nature, almost like a running joke that everyone found funny. This however felt more like he was tasked with telling her the worst news she’d ever received in her life. ( “I was in an accident, suffered severe memory loss… I’m uh… I’m sorry…” )

She shook her head, adamant that if she moved now confusion would go to her head and she’d pass out, if her legs didn’t give out beneath her that was. Nobody in Red Creek was a stranger to unexplainable things, they all knew well and truly that no two days would ever be the same, but this -- this felt oddly familiar, as if she’d felt this kind of agony before. He was here, within reach but no longer was he hers to reach out for. Long before Savannah knew that this was what she’d wanted at some point in their every complicated history; she wasn’t foolish enough to think that had he forced his memories of her completely from his mind and made her forget him that he would never have come back --- his family was here, but --- had he forgotten her things might have been different. He might have left again far earlier than he did, before the boundary had been laid at the border of town. Forgetting her might have changed a lot of things ----- but now it just hurt, like a white hot knife severing ties all over again. They’d been here before --- Kai might never have forgotten her, but she’d put enough doubt in his mind to garner hope that he’d forget how he’d felt once upon a time. “You died.” It wasn’t her most poetic moment, but it slipped from her lips so quickly she thought she might have been sick. “You weren’t in an accident, you died, Kai.” And that’s what made this all the more unbelievable. She could still feel his heartbeat if she reached out with her hand, or her magic ---- he didn’t hold a sense of death over him like a black cloud, and nor did despair fall from him in waves. Piece by piece, every species she knew enough about was checked off mentally; and yet here he was ----- and her parents were gone. It wasn’t a likely thing to think about, but the momentary thought that he could be alive, and they weren’t was enough to make her head spin. “--- Liam? Is he.. Do your parents know?” Of course they did.. they had to. Though that really only begged the question of, why didn’t she know until this very moment?
