[every time someone from gai follows me on here im like OH they found the kinder surprise 🤣]
Ohhh noooooo are there two pretty boys fighting over him? They should make out make up, we can all be friends 🥰
Would this face lie to you.
“Surely not!”
“Oh.” He supposes five minutes won’t do much more, then, but still. Gai-sensei always said that honourable shinobi abided by the rules they set.
So Lee hangs, forehead exposed with his hair compliant to the pull of gravity, as if it has any other choice. He watches Neji start without him. “Is that mine? You got a drink for me?” As he speaks, Lee starts swinging forwards and backwards on the branch.
Two minutes to go…
"I did."
He's getting comfortable - crossing his legs, leaning against the trunk of the tree. He sips his tea, content to sit. He's used to Lee's shenanigans by now.
A big smile splits across Lee’s face. Two minutes pass easily, and Lee does a hanging sit-up, before flipping down to the grass in a series of twirls. He lands in a crouch beside his teammate.
“Thank you!” Lee reaches across Neji’s lap to retrieve his drink, and settles cross-legged facing Neji’s side. He balances the drink on Neji’s knee as he breaks the seal with a pop, and leaves an arm lying over his thigh. “I wish I could be taller. Haku is the same height as me now. I think they might outgrow me soon.”
Currently hanging upside-down on a tree branch by the ankles, because Haku said it would make him taller.
"... Lee."
He's holding a bag - from their favorite boba shop. He's going to shake it once. It has drinks and some sweet buns.
"Get down."
“…!!” His favourite! But… “I have five minutes left. Will you check if I’ve grown taller?”
"... You have not gotten any taller."
He'll sit at the base of the tree. He places the bag down, before reaching in. He's taking out Lee's drink and placing it on the side of his lap farthest from Lee. Then getting his own. He stabs it with a straw. And sips!

Neji is staring at him. Silently. He has been for a few minutes now.
Lee, too, has been staring at him.
It is a competition, right? Some kind of challenge? Maybe Neji's warming up to this "rivalry" that Gai-sensei keeps talking about.
But they haven't talked about the rules. Lee has already blinked a few times. Does that mean he's lost? But Neji has blinked too. Neji hasn't said anything. Maybe Lee should say something? He doesn't really know, actually, whether Neji has really been studying him all this time, or has he merely blanked out? It's hard to tell with his all-white eyes.
"Neji, how do we know when one of us has won? And what is the challenge?"
Lee blinks at him. It is a reasonable question; it is less likely that they would die together, than for either of them to die before the other.
“Why not? Which one do you want?” He probably should work on his will, thinking of it. Gai had been speaking to him about it recently.
“And does this mean, if you die first, then I get one of your bones? It is a youthful idea, Neji, a pact between teammates that brings our precious bond beyond the limits of this life! Oh, and, is the skull considered one bone? And what about teeth?”
Neji gestures for Lee to sit beside him, patting the grass. His Byakugan spurs to life - he's looking at Lee's bones, through skin and muscle.
"... your left radius and ulna." He holds his hand out silently, as if expecting Lee to understand he wants to hold his arm.
Neji is quiet for a moment. "You can't have my skull. I would want Tenten to have that. Teeth..." He considers it. "I could have one of yours already. I'm sure you've lost enough during fights that you would not miss one more."
He can't quite remember the names of the specific bones, but he supposes, when Neji holds his hand out, it's probably his arm bones. Though Neji doesn't direct him with words, Lee reads his body language perfectly; he drops to the ground in a cross-legged position, and places his arm, warm and slick with sweat, into Neji's palm.
He nods. "Yes, Tenten should get your skull." It makes sense. The two were as tight as thieves, nearly inseparable. There were times that he, perhaps, coveted the bond they shared, but it was sufficient, most times, to share in their embrace in a way that made sense, in a way that was natural. As far as friends could be soulmates, Lee thinks that he's found this in them.
"My teeth are precious tools! I should not like to extract them intentionally while I am still alive. You will have to wait until I die." He tugs his arm just so Neji loosens his grip, and slides it along his palm till he's grasping Neji's fingers in his. Fingers that impart life or death with the slightest of touch. Fingers that have spread over Lee's chest uncountable times, to hold his chakra, to warm it. "It will pain me to lose you, Neji. But if I must mourn you, your hand will be a comforting memory to have and hold."
"Lee. Is everything a competition to you?"
He has to think about it, but he doesn’t think for very long. “No, I do not think so. I can think of many things that are not competitions.”
It is a little odd for Shino to approach him so suddenly and ask this. Lee can’t remember if they’ve ever really talked before this, actually. He knows Shino is from the cohort after his, that he’s an Aburame, and that he was in the chunin exams last year.
“Why do you ask?”

He must have ... done it again ... ran till his legs gave out. The weights at his ankles are impossibly heavy, and it's nigh impossible to lift his heel for even another step.
Lee practically leans his full weight onto her as his knees buck beneath him. Ino surprises him with the strength in her slender arm, though Lee supposes by now he should know better than to underestimate her. She's shown him her fierce strength a couple times now, hasn't she?
But still, his legs shake uncontrollably with the exertion of keeping upright, and Lee smiles bravely up at Ino. With sweat drenching every inch of his body, his hair mussed, and his breaths coming in desperate pants, he must look quite disheveled. Still, a thumbs-up finds its way to the air, trembling but valiant.
"Thank you, Ino-chan! You saved me! I–" His knees buck again, and he starts to pull Ino down with him. "–I think I might need to sit down."
Headcanons about Family
Rock Lee (李石 Li Shi) had a older sister, Jade Lee (李璘 Li Xuan), who died when she was 7 and he was 6.
he's shy.
Lee. I have a question for you.
This is the difference between Lee and his teammate: a preamble. It might even be something that positions Neji a little closer to their sensei than Lee; Lee would have simply asked.
It does explain why Neji had just been standing there, staring at Lee while he completed his set of sprints. He must have been waiting patiently for an appropriate time.
Lee straightens, intrigued. “What is it? Please ask!”
Neji continues to look at him, with his unsettling white eyed stare. It might be hard to tell but he's looking directly at Lee's face.
He brushes a stray lock of hair tossed by the wind over his shoulder.
"If you die before me, could I have one of your bones?"
