Sanji comforting reader in a storm. Maybe it's a really awful rock, the boat sort of storm, waves threating to sink them, or they just hate storms even the tiniest one.
oooo i like this! i decided to combine this request with another one. here is how go fish! Sanji would comfort reader during a storm:
(this is essentially, go fish! part 3.5)
God, you hated storms. Well, not technically, since you did love a normal rainy day here and there (emphasis on normal). You didn't even mind a thunderstorm either but you were learning that experiencing a stormy day on land and sea were two completely different things, since your chances of drowning on land could be easily avoided by seeking higher ground. But at sea? The only ground you had was the ship beneath your feet and even that wasn't guaranteed.
And weathering a storm on the high sea at night? Even worse.
You didn't even think things could get any worse until the ship started to rock.
It was extremely late in the night, or remarkably early in the morning, you couldn't tell anymore, when the storm outside had just turned from bad to worse.
From inside your shared room with Nami, you could hear the violent crashing of waves outside of your window along with the occasional crack of thunder. You were swinging all over the place in your hammock, occasionally hitting the wall if a wave got too rough.
"N-Nami?" you called out loudly. "Are you- shit!"
Suddenly, a huge rogue wave slammed into the side of the Going Merry, completely rocking the boat, slamming you hard against the wall, and causing you to fall out of your hammock and unceremoniously face-first to the floor.
"Ugh, fuck," you groaned.
Slowly, you picked yourself up and crawled towards your makeshift barrel nightstand, feeling around to find your smaller, hand-held lamp. Finding it, you carefully stood up, your head pounding from the fall, and flicked on your lamp. The small flame from the lamp illuminated your shared room, casting it all in a soft, eery glow considering the night's circumstances.
"Nami?" you called out again, carefully taking a few shaky steps towards your crewmate's hammock, the ship rocking back at forth.
But when you got closer to her hammock, you saw it empty.
"Fucking shit," you muttered, realizing where she must be with rising panic. "She better not be out on deck during this goddamn storm. Not even Nami can get us through this."
Knowing your friend, and the rest of the crew you realized, it dawned on you that she, Usopp, and Luffy were all probably trying their best to weather this storm and come up with a plan.
With a stab of fear to your heart, you quickly made your way towards the door, fully intending to push your own fear of possibly dying aside to drag your friends off the deck during such a life-threatening storm. When you opened the door and stepped into the hall, however, another violent wave rocked the boat, almost making you lose your footing and crash into the wall.
As you put out your right hand to steady yourself against the wall, you heard a door open and a voice call out your name that you would recognize anywhere.
"Y/n?" Sanji called out, a hint of worry in his voice as he made his way over to you, swaying in rhythm with the ship. "You alright, my love?"
"Ah-uh, no, Nami!" you quickly sputtered, trying to best explain the rush of panicked thoughts swirling around in your head. You whipped your head to face Sanji, who was now a foot away from you, the soft glow of your lamp illuminating his pretty face and saw his calm blue eyes looking down at you with concern. "Nami, she's, she's not in our room. And Usopp! Luffy! They're not outside, are they?" you asked in a hurry, trying to frantically turn around and head down the hall toward the deck but the ship's rocking causing you to nearly topple over. "Sanji, they'll die out there-"
"Woah, woah, woah," he calmly started, reaching out and grabbing your right arm, steadying you. "Slow down, love. Hold on," he gently squeezed your arm to get your attention. "Look at me, y/n."
His touch cut through your panicked thoughts, calming you down slightly and steadying you in the hallway.
You did as he instructed, backtracking your steps to face him fully as you looked up at him, and that's when you felt something wet on your face. What the-
"Aw, hun, you're bleeding," he murmured, concern for you washing over his tanned features as he examined your face. He gently took your chin in his hand, his fingers gingerly tilting your face in a couple of different directions as he asked, "What happened?"
Your skin tingled where he touched you, his touch feeling electric even though he was handling you as delicately as a porcelain doll. You swallowed hard, trying to keep your focus on his question. "The storm," you started explaining, your eyes wandering away from his curious gaze, "it- it hit me against the wall and I fell out of my hammock."
Sanji leaned in closer as you explained yourself, humming to himself as he listened.
At Sanji's close proximity, you could feel the warmth he radiated and in turn, you felt your heart skip a beat. "But, I'm ok Sanji. Really," you reassured him as you involuntarily scrunched up your nose, but when you did that you felt a sharp pain, causing you to flinch out of his grip. "Ow," you hissed, your eyelids fluttering closed.
You heard fabric rustling, suddenly feeling Sanji's gentle touch on your chin again, bringing your head forward slightly and a cloth being pressed against the bottom of your nose.
"There you go, love. Just keep this there," the cook cooed. "That's it."
Immediately, you opened your eyes, and the sight you were greeted with nearly caused your eyes to pop out of their sockets. Your eyebrows shot up, your face flushing crimson at seeing Sanji completely shirtless before you.
"S-Sanji," you stuttered, taking a second to actually look at the man before you.
You were too busy before to notice, but Sanji wasn't wearing his usual button-down with a tie and pair of slacks. Instead, he was barefoot, wearing what looked like skinny black sleep pants, and well, now, no shirt.
For a moment you thought it was cute to see him in his sleeping attire, but you couldn't help but gawk at his figure. Sanji was absolutely ripped. He was fit as hell. I mean, you knew he was fit when you first met him, you did see him save a drowning Luffy after all and saw his muscles back then, but that was from afar. But this? This...was different. You didn't know him back then like you did now. You didn't have a crush on him back then, hell- you weren't in love with him then.
Back at the Baratie, you had just thought he was a cute waiter. But now? You were certain he was the love of your life and here he was, completely shirtless, his six-pack abs and every other chiseled muscle defined in the intimate glow of your lantern's light.
He was the most gorgeous man you've ever seen.
"Sanji," you breathed, swallowing and trying your hardest to concentrate. But you didn't know what to say. "I...I think I'll just go lie down back in my room."
"Ah, like hell you are," he chastised with a wry smile. "Absolutely not, Missus. There's no way I'm letting you out of my sight tonight. Come on," he nodded towards the direction of his room, guiding you along. "You'll be spending the night with me."
Following him along, but not really trying to pull away, you felt your heart start to race like a rabbit's at the idea of spending the night with Sanji. Alone in his room. Just the two of you.
But he silenced you with a good-natured grin. "Ah- no protesting! Doctor's orders."
"But Sanji you're not a doctor," you started to protest anyway as he opened the door to his room and gestured for you to go inside. You stood at the doorway, looking up at him. "You're a chef."
He winked. "Chef's orders then."
You thanked whatever God was out there that it was nighttime and storming terribly so it could hide your blush better. Quickly looking away, you mumbled, "Yes, chef," as you shuffled into his room.
That brought a good-natured laugh out of the blonde cook as he quietly closed the door behind him. "There you go. Good girl."
As you stood in the middle of the room, you tried your hardest not to notice the atmosphere shift slightly when you heard his door click shut. This was the first time you both had full privacy, where you both were truly alone and away from prying eyes. You took a deep breath, trying to calm your nerves, as you tried your best to take in his room as best you could in the dim light.
You didn't get a very good look, however, because another rogue wave crashed straight into the ship, rocking the boat, and causing you to lose your balance and stumble backward. A yelp of surprise and fear came out of you, expecting to fall hard again, but instead of hitting the floor, you fell into Sanji instead.
"Woah! Careful," Sanji called out as he caught you and held you against him.
You exhaled a shuddering breath, feeling the fear from earlier creep back up into your chest, as you rested your head back and against Sanji's bare torso. "Sanji," you whispered silently, your breathing becoming quicker as your thoughts raced. "I'm...I'm scared," you said, your voice breaking slightly at the end.
You felt Sanji rub his hands along your upper arms soothingly before resting them on your shoulders with a reassuring squeeze.
"Don't worry, y/n," his voice murmured in your ear. You could feel his voice resonate from deep within his chest. It brought goosebumps to your skin. "I'm here. I won't let anything bad happen to you."
After a moment, you whispered, "Promise?"
"Cross my heart and hope to die."
Part of you wanted to confess, right then and there. Just, let everything all out and say those three little words that danced on the tip of your tongue: 'I love you'. What did you have to lose? What if the ship did indeed capsize during this storm and you never got the chance to tell this man, this sweet, loving, kind, generous man that you loved him, that he was the love of your life.
You opened your mouth, ready to just spill out your feelings and emotions in this perfectly, imperfect moment but the ship swayed, catching you off guard, and there was a crack of thunder outside, bringing you back to the reality of the situation and you couldn't.
Breaking the spell of the moment, Sanji spoke up quietly. He placed a hand over yours, bringing his midnight blue cotton t-shirt up to your face as he instructed, "Alright, keep this here, my love. Put a little bit of pressure on there...like that, yeah. Don't tilt your head back. I don't want you swallowing your blood now, yeah?" He then took a step to the side, guiding you towards his bed. "Take a seat on my bunk, back against the wall, ok? Don't lie down. I'll join you in a second."
You did as you were told, placing your lamp on the small nightstand table at the head of his bed before climbing on, leaning your back against the wall. You held his now ruined shirt against your face as you watched Sanji dig around in his trunk before pulling out and slipping on another t-shirt.
You couldn't help the involuntary sigh of disappointment that aroused from you watched him put the shirt over his head, pulling the fabric down to cover the rest of his body.
Sanji glanced over at you curiously, a quirk in his brow as he shut the trunk. "You alright over there?"
Your eyes widened slightly. Shit, you didn't mean to actually make any noise. That sigh was supposed to stay in your head. "I'm just...tired," you lied quickly, but soon after you said that, a genuine yawn escaped your lips.
At your yawn, Sanji smiled slightly at you before crawling into bed with you, sitting next to you on your right, back against the wall, as he put his arm around you and pulled you flush against him, your head resting in the crook of his neck. "I bet you are, my love." His thumb rubbed your arm soothingly. "Go to sleep. I'm here."
At his instruction, you felt exhaustion overcome you, the fear and adrenaline leaving your body as a deep sense of safety and relaxation came over you. Your thoughts became muddled, a bigger yawn leaving your mouth as you let yourself go.
But part of you didn't want this moment to end. Part of you didn't want to drift off into sleep just yet because when you woke up, the moment would be over.
"Sanji..." you mumbled. "How'd you...know all this stuff?"
Sanji rested the side of his head on top of yours. "Know what, sweetheart?" he asked kindly.
"This...doctor chef stuff."
"Well," he hummed quietly. "Zeff and 'em used to have their fair share of busted-up noses and concussions back in the day. All of those pirate fights we had to break up, you know?"
"Oh, right...right," you replied thickly.
That made sense to you and your tired brain. You both stayed quiet for a while, the waves rocking you to sleep instead of scaring you to death. And you had a certain blonde pirate chef doctor to thank for that.
"And Nami? And Luffy? What about Usopp?" you asked after a long time.
Sanji took in a deep breath through his nose, expecting you to already be asleep, but it warmed his heart to hear you still care about the rest of the crew, even though you were clearly exhausted and in no shape to worry about anyone else but yourself given your current condition.
"They're alright, Missus," he answered patiently, lifting his head to press a kiss to the top of your head. "Go to sleep, my love."
"Mmkay," you replied and instantly, you fell asleep, your breathing soft and even as you fell into unconsciousness.
Sanji stayed like that for the rest of the night. Rubbing your arm, planting soft kisses into your hair, and whispering sweet nothings into your ear, hoping his loving words cultivated sweet dreams in your mind.
It wasn't until two hours later that someone disturbed the peaceful bliss. There was a quiet knock on the door before Luffy came in without waiting for an answer.
"Sanji," the Going Merry's captain started as quietly as he could as he strode into the room, not waiting for the chef to invite him in. "Do you know where y/n is? Because she's not in her room- oh," Luffy started to ask before stopping when he saw the site before him.
Now, normally it took a lot for Sanji to become embarrassed, but having his captain see him 'in bed' with a woman- no, with you, made the tip of his ears turn pink and a slight blush appear on his cheeks.
"Uh, Luffy, look, it's not what it looks like-" the cook started quickly and softly, not wanting to wake you up.
But Luffy, ever the innocent and naive person he was, didn't even bat an eye. "Oh! There she is. You were looking after her during this storm." He nodded, a look of satisfaction on his face. "Thank you," the captain bowed his head towards his chef slightly, "You're a good guy Sanji."
Ignoring Sanji's baffled and embarrassed expression, Luffy then quietly whispered a status report to his head chef. "It looks like we're out of the worst of the storm. The Going Merry held strong thanks to Nami's quick navigation and Usopp's bravery with the sails. It looks like it's smooth sailing for now." A look of exhaustion came over the captain's eyes as he let out a small sigh. "I'm going to get some sleep. I'll see you in the morning for breakfast, ok?"
Sanji merely nodded as he watched Luffy turn around and reach for the doorknob.
With his hand on the doorknob, Luffy paused. "Thanks for taking care of her, Sanji." He looked at the blonde cook, gratitude written across his face. "She hates storms."
And with that, the curly-haired captain pulled the door open and left the room, leaving a slightly embarrassed Sanji and a peacefully sleeping you.
As Sanji closed his eyes, resting his head against yours, wrapping both arms around you and bringing you closer, he just thanked his lucky stars and it was their oblivious captain that had caught you both instead of another one of the other straw hats.
If it were anyone else, that conversation would've gone a lot differently.
