Jane huffed and tilted her head slightly. “You know that guy who walks around like he owns the air in the room? The one with the stupid confident smile?” She curved her lips into an exaggerated grin, dropping her voice in mock imitation. “Hey… sunshine. Namaste. Miss me? Aughh.”Then she rolled her eyes and let her face go back to normal. “Yeah. That’s him. Head of digital content at Scarlet, the magazine I work for. Basically, he’s in my face every day… except weekends. Those are my only safe hours.”

Jane stood near the small stage at Karaoke Boho, microphone warm in her hands, heart beating way too fast for someone who sang alone in her apartment almost every night. It was Valentine’s Day, and she wasn’t going to spend it sulking at home—tonight, she wanted to actually have fun. The opening notes of Shake It Off filled the room, and she sucked in a breath, nerves and excitement tangling in her chest. Her voice started soft, cautious—but then it settled, smooth and clear, carrying easily over the music. By the chorus, she was smiling, swaying with the rhythm, forgetting the crowd for just a moment and singing like she always did at home. When the song ended, she lowered the mic, cheeks flushed, eyes darting toward the room as she caught someone watching. “…Okay,” Jane said with a nervous laugh, “that was either brave… or a terrible life choice. Emir hadn't had the chance to go out for an evening run in a long time. He had been working on doing promo for his new show, Sandokan and trying to keep whatever relationships with friends and family alive, he needed this run. His favorite place to run was at Riverside Park and there wasn't usually anyone there, until tonight. He had just stopped running when the other person said something about pizza being cancelled. "I'm sorry, are you talking to me?" He asked and tilted his head to the side.

Jane startled so hard she nearly jumped out of her sneakers. She spun around, one hand flying to her chest, eyes wide. “Oh—!” A sharp breath escaped her. “God, I thought you were… a tree. Or a mugger!” Her gaze flicked over him.. tall, broad shoulders, dark beard, hair catching the low park lights and she visibly stiffened for half a second before forcing herself to relax. “…You run quietly,” she added, swallowing, trying to sound casual and failing just a little. She rubbed the back of her neck and gave a crooked, embarrassed smile. “Uh, no. Sorry. I was talking to myself. I do that when I’m tired and emotionally betrayed by carbohydrates.” A pause, then softer, defensive humor creeping in: “Did I say that out loud?”

“Wow… imagine having so little going on in your life that you have to invent chaos for entertainment. Tragic, really. Someone get her a hobby that isn’t stirring nonsense.” Jane paused, then added with a dry laugh, “I wonder how much she makes for making up drama”

Briar laughed. "Or, if I'm here, I can always answer the door." She promised her. "Besides that moment with your ex, how are you doing?"

Jane’s lips curved into a small, genuine smile. “Uggh, you’re so sweet… officially my front door hero. Keep that in mind.” She grinned. “Besides finally tackling my apartment—bye-bye Christmas tree, a little decorating, and turning roommate auditions into a full-on reality show… I’m good. Can’t wait for a fresh start. What about you, Briar? Any chaos or adventures lately?”

Issac laughed. "It does not favor me at all." He shook his head with a smile. "Well how did things end between you two? He might miss you." He shrugged. "Okay, so no pizza, what do you want to do now?"

Jane smirked, eyes narrowing slightly. “Miss me?? Yeah, right. More like he misses the free stays in my apartment,.. ah, please, don’t ask me that, I’m afraid you’d judge me.” She sighed, leaning back. “I was thinking of confronting him… but that’d be plain stupid.” She thought for a moment, “I’ll just order something other than pizza I guess… so, what’s good in Manhattan?”

Jane smirked at Sage, still bitter about her leaving her oldest brother. “Oh, you’re definitely cursed… maybe it’s on you. You know what they say,.. karma’s a b**ch. Honestly, at this point, Manhattan probably just rolls its eyes every time you show up on a date.”

Jane’s shoulders tensed, and she let out a sharp, almost bitter laugh. “Dating… dating is really hard these days,” she muttered under her breath, her voice tight. She bit her lip, words tumbling out before she could stop them. “I’m trying to breathe, I really am… but can you blame a woman for not having sex for what feels like… forever?!” Her eyes went wide as the words hit the air. “Oh… crap. I—uh…” She stumbled over herself, cheeks flushing, then deliberately shifted her gaze, forcing the conversation away from her own mess. “Anyway,” she said with a sigh, leaning back slightly. “Azriel…” She let out a short, incredulous laugh, shaking her head. “What are you even talking about? You sound like some kind of… superhero or something.” She paused, taking a breath. “Sorry, I vented. But… are you okay?” She asked, genuinely checking on him.

Jane laughed softly, shaking her head. “Thirty nights of screaming fans and glittering chaos? Ryker, that doesn’t sound like work… it sounds like surviving a musical apocalypse!” She smiled lightly and added, “Honestly… I’m kind of jealous, because I really love Harry Styles. I’ll light a candle for your sanity… and another for your ears. If you make it through October, I expect heroic stories,.. and at least one moment where you admit you’ve become one of his fans… or maybe you’re secretly one already?”

Kai yawned as he walked into Off the Wagon, eager to drink and let loose. This semester was truly kicking his ass and he needed a good, strong drink. Walking up to the bartop, he ordered and sat down. Looking over his shoulder, he heard someone call his name and he smiled when he spotted Jane. "Hey Jane." He nodded to her. Jane slid up next to him at the bar and smiled. “Hey Kai! I’m good, just the usual chaos,” she said with a laugh. “Looks like you could use a strong one tonight too huh. Same as always?” She nudged him playfully. She ran a hand through her hair, letting out a small sigh. “Ugh… what would you suggest for me?” she added, leaning back slightly, her eyes flicking toward the bottles behind the bar. “I need something to stop overthinking about… ya know…”

it had been ages since mor actually had to pay for a place to live and unlike in pyrhtian and velaris, she didn't have a mountain of cash that she could use whenever and not be worried about it running out. this place was different. this place was controlled by money and she honestly hated it. she decided she needed a roommate and she had seen jane's listing and figured it wouldn't do her any harm to just talk to her. arriving at jane's, she knocked on the door and bounced nervously betwen her feet as she waited for her to answer. "you've got this mor, you've faced worse than a roommate interview." she whispered to herself.

Jane’s eyes flicked to the door as the knock echoed through her apartment. She stood, brushed a few crumbs from her lap, and took a calming breath. “Moment of truth,” she murmured before swinging the door open. Suppressing a grin, she said warmly, “Hi! You must be Morrigan.” She stepped aside to let her in and added with a playful wink, “Come on in—I warn you, I might interrogate you a little.” “Make yourself comfortable,” Jane continued, gesturing to the table. “There are plenty of cookies.” “Coffee?” she offered, pointing at the mugs neatly arranged. “It’s important you pass this first part of the test—high-stakes caffeine,” she said with a teasing smile.

Cressida held Jane’s gaze for a beat longer than necessary, as if weighing the sincerity behind the sparkle. Then she lifted her glass to meet hers. “To messy authenticity,” she agreed softly. “It tends to outlast the polished versions.”

A faint smirk touched her lips. “Just remember, when you drop the script, some people will not know how to respond. They prefer the fantasy.” Her eyes flicked briefly over the room before settling back on Jane. “The real question is whether you are ready for who stays once the illusions clear.”

Jane smiled, slower this time, her eyes lingering on Cressida with quiet respect as she took a sip from her glass. “Maybe that is the point,” she said. “You have a sharp way of putting things.” She paused. “I am tired of rehearsing for an audience that only loves the costume. Whoever stays… at least I will finally know they see me.” Jane looked at her, amused. “Is this how you always talk?.. make me wonder what do you do for a living?”

Xaden chuckled. "On the plus side, everyone is alive and we're all here in...Manhattan, together." He shrugged. "Do you think you'll have to deal with your ex anytime soon?"

“Wait… do you have some kind of magical superpower to make exes invisible or vanish? Because I could really use that right now!” she said, half-joking, rolling her eyes but secretly wishing it were true.

Cressida’s expression softened, the edge of her confidence giving way to something more intent. “Denial has its own schedule,” she said gently. “If you had met me earlier, you might not have listened. Timing does most of the work for honesty.”

She took a small sip at last, eyes never leaving Jane’s. “Rehearsals can be powerful, though. You learn the lines, test the posture, decide what still fits.” A faint smile followed, warmer now. “Just be careful not to mistake the performance for the person. The best versions tend to show up when no one is watching.”

Jane let out a soft, knowing laugh. “I’ll take that warning to heart,” she said, tilting her head. “But maybe the fun is in testing the lines… seeing which parts stick, which embarrass you. Honesty in a room like this has a way of rewriting the script. The magic, I think, is in being authentic—even if it’s messy, even if it ruins a few illusions.”

She raised her glass to Cressida. “Here’s to rehearsals for a better version of ourselves: no regrets, no scripts, no apologies.”

Jane squinted at him, unimpressed, then waved a hand dismissively. “Yeah, well, some of us don’t get to coast through life looking put together by accident.” A small, crooked smile tugged at her lips. “You’d probably answer the door half-asleep, on a bad day, during a minor apocalypse,... and still look annoyingly fine. So no, you can’t relate.”

"Hey, it's not an accident, these are pure pretty boy genes and the love of my girlfriend that make me look this good." Issac chuckled. "Coming from a male's perspective, he probably was really happy to see you, depending on how the relationship ended that is."

Jane snorted. “Oh wow, ‘pretty boy genes’ and girlfriend magic? Must be nice.” “The universe clearly favors you,” she added, pointing at him with mock accusation.

“You think he was happy to see me? Nah. More like happy to finally have an interesting story to brag about for once. And yeah, being on the receiving end feels kinda like a victory… right?” She paused as she realized something, then added, “Just don’t want his ego getting any bigger—he might think I’m ordering pizza just to see him. Yuuuks! This conversation isn’t going anywhere better.”
