Hey uh, then how about we just make the post a call for it to be changed to Complex Abuse, instead of all of this? Spreading misinformation doesn’t help people with NPD or abuse survivors. We didn’t ask for the term’s name, and having to type it in to find our resources doesn’t make us ableist.

It’s not some “super special secret that only people with NPD can do.” It’s actually the same deliberate choice, and anyone can in fact make it. You don’t see “autistic abuse,” because autism is not a personality trait that anyone can deliberately choose to use as part of the “abuse strategy,” as clinicians put it. A better comparison would be something more like “anxious abuse.” People can have a personality trait of being anxious and use that deliberately against others without having anxiety disorder.

Granted, I don’t know if that’s actually a term FOR the anxiety one, and I personally believe that the fact anyone can use the narcissistic one makes it all the more beneficial for both of our communities to use the term Complex for it instead!! I just wanted to clarify the information.

Hey uh, what the fuck is up with this idea that trans people need to anticipate other/cis people’s needs? I just saw a post online somewhere about another one of those “hahaaa this is a prompt meme to rage bait people what’s YOUR infuriating take?” Right? Cool whatever I get that, but the whole thing made me realize this point.

That post was saying like: “Hey neopronouns are cool but I think people should also have regular pronouns so people can gender you correctly around parents and coworkers,” and like I definitely believe my above idea is VERY TRUE for those using neopronouns too and the post is basically telling them to anticipate the needs of others too, but there was also a comment on it that made me see it SO blatantly obviously.

A comment on the above thread specifically mentions it/its pronouns and that person said something like “Is it really that hard to use it/its pronouns?” And my lord, the comments further on THIS idea!! Basically ppl answered with “yes,” lmao and there were like two ways they got to that “yes.”

1) There was this… condescending attitude about it where people— at worst, were sounding exactly like your basic transphobes like: “I’m not calling u that lol,” and then at “best,” were like… over and over again repeating this idea… this absolute assumption that people are like self-degrading/dismissing the history of it/its pronouns and how the worst people use those to dehumanize.

2) People kept projecting their fear and discomfort onto trans people using it/its? And in the process they kept telling us we need to anticipate other people’s needs and not use it/its(or you know our own pronouns) just because we might encounter someone else who is so uncomfortable with it that they idk get a trigger set off? I think was the insinuation there? But like we aren’t responsible for that. What happened to the energy of people being responsible for their own mental health? Where did “trauma isn’t a reason for disrespect,” go?

And in neither of those cases did any of the people typing that shit ever even acknowledge that the people they’re talking to WILLINGLY WANT TO and ARE COMFORTABLE WITH use/using it/its for our own damn selves?? I don’t get it.

Anyway if you use neopronouns and/or it/its pronouns, it is not your responsibility to anticipate cis, or even other trans people’s needs. You are allowed to ask for the basic respect of having your pronouns be validated and respected.

Hey so uh, I don’t think about the topic in terms like this. There’s absolutely nothing “special,” about any form of abuse. It’s a serious matter across all terms. There is nothing ‘regular,’ about abuse either. That’s literally the whole point of the word abuse here. Abuse is the outlier. It’s made up of deliberate, harmful, and repeated behaviors/actions that go beyond all reasonable ‘regular,’ expectations. All put simply, of course.

The particular pattern of behavior in the clinical terms that concerned people wish to change— and I’m all for listening to those people, so I use Complex Abuse, as an alternative, myself, in the context of what professionals use in treating patients with history of surviving abuse can use all of those “classic,” as you put it, modifiers at once. (Emotional, Physical, Financial, etc.)

As I understand it, the way an abuser will do this involves a deliberate and intentional use of the narcissistic personality trait. There is an awareness and implementation of this trait to complete the pattern of behavior that makes up what the clinical pros call: an abuse strategy.

And let me be very clear: Neither I nor any professional who has helped me in trauma recovery have EVER used this term in any therapeutic treatments/materials to state or imply in any way the personality disorder of the same name automatically makes any person with a diagnosis of said disorder an abuser.

But that doesn’t mean I’ll sit here and tell you that there aren’t shitty doctors and therapists who might actually operate as such or say that it DOES mean that either. And I just happen to have severe anxiety disorders, so I understand these concerns perfectly. I deal with the whole “being anxious versus having anxiety,” conflations all the time.

We have NPD, we have friends, a partner, a life. Do we seem like some evil abuser? Because most people with NPD are not.
