the use of either hand, either side willing to do her bidding is where sinistra became sinistra. her parents must not have realized they set her fate in stone when giving her such a name but the world was about to start by being kind to turning into something darker.
although they were pureblood status, the lowe family were considered just that: lower class status. they didn’t starve or were unable to put clothes on their backs but niceties were a luxury, not the standard. sinistra didn’t know any different and wasn’t bothered by it. she had all she needed: her parents and best friend, kenneth, fellow pureblood. but blood status didn’t play the biggest trump card. after all, her parents weren’t that kind of pureblood family. they believed they had entitlement in the community but didn’t speak terribly about muggles. therefore, sinistra had no preconceived notions about what was considered unacceptable in society. until she was eleven.
when sinistra hopped the hogwarts express with kenneth, they continued to be inseparable as they were sorted into the same house: slytherin. she clung to him as he did her. their fellow classmates didn’t understand why they weren’t more stringent about who they believed to be beneath them but as the years went on, they became more and more aware. sinistra’s parents tried reminding her what they taught her but once she was back around her friends at school, their messages rang with more truth. she never fully subscribed to the idea but it made more sense by the day. kenneth was more down to earth about it but nothing came between them.
while they attended hogwarts, sinistra and kenneth fell into a relationship without realizing it. late nights in the library turned into even later nights in the common room. then it turned into late nights on the grounds with sweet, soft words, secrets and touches. the two were meant to be so when kenneth proposed after graduation, sinistra happily and excitedly accepted. during the wedding planning, sinistra worked with her mother on the details and didn’t realize kenneth was slipping away. after finalizing the plans and hugging her mother goodbye earlier than expected, she hurried home to tell him the good news, only to find him in bed with another woman. someone from school. a muggle.
a fury sinistra had never known grew, eating her insides. she blacked out and the next thing she remembered was the muggle woman twisting and turning on the floor. the way kenneth looked at sinistra was with hate, disgust and sadness; it was the last look she would see on his face as she left without words being spoken. she jogged down the road until collapsing to the ground, sobbing. unable to know what to feel, sinistra swore to never let anything like this happen again. she swore off love, relationships and, most importantly, her blasé attitude toward muggles.
sinistra decided she needed to leave britain; she couldn’t be anywhere near kenneth and escape seemed the only way out. during her travels, she began taking meticulous notes about different classes — and blood statuses. she researched in international libraries, but became more interested in her own type of field research. sinistra became more and more disgusted by muggles as the days passed. she vowed to do whatever she could to show the world why purebloods were superior to muggles.
upon coming back to britain, her parents took her in with open arms but didn’t recognize their beloved daughter anymore. sinistra had changed and it scared them. the family discussed what she would do now that she was back while her parents urged sinistra to work for the ministry, she was approached by an unknown benefactor aware of what she had been doing abroad and offered her financial compensation to use her information as death eater propaganda. she didn’t think twice before shaking this person’s hand. she finally had a way to get the word out. but there was no turning back.
sinistra rose in social circles which would have made her parents proud if it had been under more humble circumstances but she had cut ties with them. she didn’t want them holding her back so turned her back on them. instead, she wore silk dresses, stiletto heels and adorned herself with jewelry doing whatever she had to. most importantly, sinistra invested in the sweet perfume she wore everyday she and kenneth were together.
