I just saw a youtube short about a couple whose child was diagnosed with PANS/PANDAS. The father said that it was as though his child was "gone". And it got me thinking about all the horror stories we have heard about changelings, demonic possession, and doppelgangers. Schizophrenia, psychopathy, certain shades of autism, and a brain tumor could all have contributed to these stories as well. I wonder how many people have fallen victim to a superstitious society that didn't know any better. Over the course of thousands of years, I would imagine millions at this point. I wonder if all those scary stories are just inspired by people who needed the help that wouldn't come for hundreds of years? Science continues to close the gap between the natural and the supernatural.

Someone I know died sometime between last night and this afternoon. They still haven't found the body, but considering he fell into an icy Lake Superior, he's fucking dead. I can wish all I want that he somehow survived his fall and is holed up somewhere surviving. But the fact of the matter is they searched the whole shoreline and found nothing. That man was 31, married, and a shining light for everyone who knew him. His wife is one of the sweetest, most down-to-earth women I've ever had the pleasure of making acquaintances with. I went to Bible college for one semester with both of them. I haven't really spoken to either of them in 10 years. But I see them on Facebook periodically. That's how I found out this morning. One of our mutual friends shared a breaking news story and tagged him. I don't pray a lot, certainly not to any god, but this morning I did. I feel stupid, I don't really truly know these people. I never fucking talk to them, just periodically react to whatever posts they made, but that's it. I felt stupid reaching out to his wife and asking her if she was okay. As if she might be, or as if I could be of any help to her. I felt stupid asking my Facebook friends to pray too. I felt stupid crying when I heard that the search had been called off and he was dead. And most of all, I felt stupid for not getting harder to reacquaint myself with them when he was alive. That is one less light in this dark world, and I barely took the time to appreciate it while it was lit. I can only guess how much pain she is in. That's fucking brutal to lose the love of your life like that. How do you go on from that? It doesn't make any fucking sense, you're not supposed to lose someone close to you. That only happens to people you don't know and will never meet. It doesn't ever happen to you or any of your friends. Life is fine and then suddenly it's not. And you're just supposed to mourn and then continue on with your life as if a piece of you didn't get ripped out? I hope to everything that this is all just one big mistake and he'll be found in some random hospital and she'll be able to hold him close and feel relief and unbridled joy. But nobody gets to have that happy ending. I feel stupid for making this post, but I don't really know what else to do with my feelings.

What the fuck is the deal with people freaking out about Cardi and Megan? Nobody bats an eye about the swimsuit portion of Miss America. And before someone says "well that's not the same because they aren't writhing around like a slut." What do you think the swimsuit portion is for? Their health and wellness? Miss America is simply a pageant that objectifies women, but I guess as soon as a woman who owns her own body and knows who she is and celebrates it by "acting like a hoe" on stage, well that just goes against our good Christian morals! At least she's being fucking honest about what she's doing.

In this shadow work challenge, we will be exploring our past and delving into some of the core experiences that have helped create and reinforce our shadows. Please keep in mind that shadow work is a highly individual process and there is simply no way I could ever devise any sort of curriculum that yields impeccable results for everyone. It is up to you to give this challenge true substance. This is not a set of step-by-step instructions or specified exercises, but a collection of interrelated subjects that form a generic basis for shadow work that you will [hopefully] be able to build off of. 

The prompts included were designed to be responded to in one (or all) of the following ways: journaling, creative expression, or tarot reading. I recommend journaling and/or creative expression as the basis with tarot as a supplement, but it can serve as a stand alone tarot evaluation as well (which is why I created this Tree of Life Spread). Whatever works for you, go for it! This challenge is only meant to get your mind reeling, and as you will see it’s pretty cut and dry, so I encourage you to use it as you please– get creative and allow it to evolve as you go. 

If you feel comfortable doing so, please share your work and tag “january shadow work challenge”. I for one would love to see it, and I’m sure those who are trying to get their foot in the door with shadow work would appreciate some reference material.
