What I mean: REMUS LUPIN KNEW HE WAS SUSPECTED FOR BEING THE TRAITOR BECAUSE HE WAS A WEREWOLF. HE THOUGHT FOR YEARS THAT HIS BEST FRIEND BETRAYED AND KILLED THREE OF THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT CARED ABOUT HIM. THEN HE WAS LEFT ALONE IN A SOCIETY THAT HATED HIM, NOT ABLE TO HOLD DOWN A JOB AND DIDN'T GET TO SEE HIS BEST FRIEND'S SON AND PROBABLY THOUGHT HE WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH TO SEE HIM.

Re: Marauders in the Era of Sexual Revolution and Drugs

Seeing some discussions about this on my dash recently and thought I’d throw in my two cents on it. While I very much enjoy when people don’t forget that the Marauders are not MODERN figures, with the same modern sensibilities as the rest of us, and take into account the period that they were born and raised in, I think it’s also very easy to tip over into taking stereotypes as absolutes. Things like the Sexual Revolution and Punk were COUNTER CULTURE movements; they were not the mainstream. Yes they made a big, HUGE, LASTING impact, but not everyone was involved. Think about the stereotypes of your own generation; are you a perfect example of all the crazy popular things associated with people of your age? Is every person that you know? 

Add to that the peer pressure of BOASTING about things you’ve done that you haven’t actually. In my experience, teens don’t do half of the things they SAY they do, whether it sex or drugs or just stupid crazy things. They exaggerate and lie to make themselves seem cooler or edgier than they really were. 

Then you have to take into consideration the fact that those things were in the MUGGLE world, and the Marauders are ( generally ) thoroughly magical raised. ( Generally because Remus has a Muggle Mother and Peter is pretty much left at uncertain heritage ). Thus their exposure to such things would have pretty much been limited to Muggleborn students at Hogwarts. In a time when those students would have been picked on and persecuted by others for flaunting those Muggle things. Plus different attitudes about things in the Magical community versus Muggle ( a discussion about sexuality and sex acceptance in the Magical community is really another discussion though. ) 

Which isn’t to say that it’s impossible that the Marauders were sex and drug filled hooligans to the extreme. I personally think such thinking needs to be tempered, and I do think it’s impossible that Hogwarts was an absolute temple of sex and drugs and hedonism just because it was the 70s.
