The grass swayed gently under the evening wind.
Violet lay on the ground, one ear still covered by an earphone, looping Lullaby by The Cure. The other earphone dangled by her shoulder, its cord curling loosely across the grass.
Daisuke sat beside her, staring at the sky for a long while before finally speaking:
“Hey… do you believe in parallel universes?”
Violet didn’t look at him.
“…I don’t know,” she replied slowly. “Why?”
“Nothing,” Daisuke shrugged. “Just… it crossed my mind.”
The wind blew over the grass again, making the earphone cord sway lightly.
After a while, Violet finally spoke:
“If they really exist, maybe in some universe… we’re not here.”
Daisuke lowered his gaze to her.
Violet thought for a moment, as if randomly plucking an answer from her mind.
Daisuke couldn’t help but chuckle.
“That doesn’t sound so great.”
“Yeah.” Violet replied softly.
Silence fell for a while.
“Then in that universe,” Daisuke asked suddenly, “what happened to us in the end?”
Violet raised her hand, shading a bit of the sunset.
She stared at the sky, as if truly imagining that place.
“Maybe… we died together.”
The wind swept over the grass again.
And the Lullaby in the earphones kept playing.
