Cowboy Bebop's main character Spike Spiegel was directly modeled after the Japanese actor Yusaku Matsuda, specifically inheriting his distinct physical appearance, effortless coolness and tragic anti-hero persona. Director Shinichiro Watanabe and character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto drew heavily from Matsuda's definitive role as Shunsaku Kudo in the 1979 live-action drama Tantei Monogatari (Detective Story).
Spike's signature unruly, fluffy hair, his lanky frame and his penchant for wearing a loosely tailored, crumpled suit paired with a button-down shirt are visual nods to Matsuda's character. Beyond the style, Spike embodies Matsuda's trademark blend of laid-back, cynical nonchalance masking a deep melancholy and martial arts prowess, serving as a profound tribute to the late actor.
