okay i just watched the series a few weeks ago and i know its older, but do you have a opinion on girls und panzer? I liked it and i think ill check out strike witches next. (yay for firesticks with kodi on it!)
my opinion? everyone should watch it. it’s the anime that i pitch to people who either haven’t seen very much anime or don’t watch anime at all since it’s such a bizarre concept yet very palatable despite all the historical references. it’s had a huge impact on me.
mr. desert fox himself shows up as one of the main girls. i didn’t know anything about him until the episode focusing on yukari, the tank loader, where a poster of his face can be seen in her room. i remember my friend pointed it out and so after researching him, i came to admire him and understand more about the germans during ww2. it’s not that cut and dry evil nazi bullshit that people hold on to. as with every military, there are nuances and often times those nuances tell you more about the human condition than your own education system can or will ever teach you.
so yeah, i ended up learning a lot more about history because of girls und panzer. i also became much more invested in tank modelling and it also introduced me to world of tanks. not only that, i learned part of a russian war time song just because i love the scene where all the soviet tanks are mobilized in the snow and the cute girls are singing “katyusha” together.
and it’s influenced my future plans, which include: visiting the uk just to see the tank museum and driving a tank over a car or two, which is actually possible here in america. it won’t be for a while though, but luckily, there’s a museum that features tanks right in my own state!
tanks are certainly one of most the devastating products of human aggression, yet they’re such intriguing pieces of mid 20th century technology and this series displays the creators respect for global history. paired with cute girls, it’s a powerful dynamic. i usually hate these moe series, but the characters in girls und panzer are admirable and demonstrate traits of experienced soldiers as they evolve throughout the show.
which is another major reason why i have such a huge hard on for this anime. it doesn’t glorify war, but rather, paints it as something that builds character. apart from the whole being physically and psychologically broken from the ruthlessness of combat, war can bring about self-control, toughness, and the determination to see things through. i saw this in these girls and i really came to like them because of it.
there’s a realistic quality to it, despite the crazy overall concept of panzer fahren being a common sport for girls and the whole towns on air craft carriers thing. so i think anybody can find a character they really like.
sorry for going on so many tangents but it’s one of my favorite anime of all time and i hope anyone reading this will give it the chance it deserves.
edit: oh and there’s fucking tank drifting!
