I will never support any Aang slander in the new movie. I have no idea why people are conflating Katara and Aang's struggles as one and the same. Aang clearly has way more severe issues to deal with surrounding the fact that he has literally not a single living member of his ethnicity/race left. And whilst it can be argued that Aang was a more absent father to his non-airbending children, however, we have to focus on the fact that the Avatar cycle needed, as far as Aang was aware, an airbender in order to continue to go through the elements.
If Aang had no airbending children, or his children did not have any children, the Avatar cycle could become fundamentally broken.
Also, while it's true that Katara lost her mother and waterbending members of her tribe, there were still waterbenders existing throughout the nations. Let's be for real right now.
There were even waterbenders in her tribe after the series ended. So clearly Aang has way more significant issues concerning the fact that his entire people have been genocided and he's the last one left. That's why he attached so quickly to the new airbender in the new movie, because he actually saw a future where it didn't rest all on his shoulders to continue his own race.
I have no idea why people are saying it's misogynistic to want to have kids ... It's just quite weird honestly. For the sake of a ship that really doesn't have any romantic moments like I personally don't even see the Zutara ship as a viable option.
When we talk about Aang's parenting methods, we need to recognize the fact that the air nomads never actually had parents. They raised all children communally, which obviously affected Aang's perception of parenthood. Clearly, he raised them according to air nomads standards so Katara unfortunately had to pick up the slack, but it's not like he knew any other way to raise children. It clearly worked for his race for a very long period of time, so why would he change it?
Anyway, obviously, all avatars are flawed, which is shown through the many depictions of avatars having significant hamartia which affected the future events other avatars had to deal with. However, I don't see why Aang can't struggle with trauma and make relatively minor negative decisions whilst all the rest of the characters are forgiven when their trauma makes them act irrationally .....
