…
La push was hot.
I stood outside on Billy’s porch, my fingers picking at the edge of my cuticles, sweating bullets. I was only wearing a tank top, some sandals, and a pair of Daisy Dukes I stole out of my mom's closet before the trip. And yet as the trees blew, and the hot salty wind grazed my skin—it felt like I was wearing over 20 layers of clothing and a scarf to boot.
Is this what they described hell as?
I sat down on the steps, swatting away any mosquitoes that stopped to feast on my legs. Picking up a blade of grass, I began tearing it to pieces, groaning as my underarms began to dampen the shirt. Billy was sitting on my side, a small foldable table propped in front of him. It was early morning, and the humid air had already driven us outside, prompting us to stare into the wilderness from the porch in hopes of some cool breeze passing us by.
But it was pretty obvious that nothing was coming anytime soon
“ I wanna go home.” Billy gave his signature laugh, but it lacked the hearty passion he always gave—his smile didn’t reach his eyes and his eyebrows didn’t raise like the arms of a nice office chair, instead, his lips remained tensed, so lightly sighing through his nose as he released a breath—it wasn’t genuine. “ It’s only been a day Y/n, don’t you think you're being a bit dramatic?” my arms dropped to my sides as I relaxed my posture, this heat made me feel like I wasn’t being dramatic enough! “ Yeah I know Hwiyul, but you have to realize I haven’t been allowed outside since I got here!”
Billy sipped his coffee, humming in response to my outcry for release. “ Your outside now aren’t you?” Pushing his knee as a response I couldn’t help but crack an unwanted smile at his joke. “ Heard anything from your mother?” I shrugged hardly finding interest in my mom’s disappearance, after all, she did that type of thing all the time.
“ I still haven’t gotten the chance to see Sam and Embry! I heard they’ve grown.”
Billy's lips tighten at the mention, slowly growing into a fond smile as he remembers Sam and Embry before everything. “No doubt about it, they are even bigger than your father” Joshua Uley, or in other words Joshua L/n, a man only to be described as a mystery, to my mom—-he was the guy who did everything right, bought her roses on a tough day, massaged her feet when she got too tired, always remembered every date and kissed her goodnight no matter how tough the day or big the fight. But to the Uley family, he was nothing more than an undeserving piece of crap not worth the junk it took to make him—I didn’t grow up around him of course, he died before I could even get a chance to see him, the man had a knack for avoiding fatherhood. But my mom loved him, she only learned after he died from a stroke that he actually had two other kids.
My mom of course was fuming learning about the other family describing the feeling as Joshua ripping her heart out and shredding it. So like the determined woman she was— at 8 months pregnant she hopped into her broken down car, that she still drives today and drove it over 3,000 miles from sunny bright Florida to rainy ole forks, so much as without a phone call of confirmation. She still laughs to this day—remembering how terrified Sam looked as she stood at the door 10 seconds away from sobbing, the first thing coming out of her mouth was “ I can’t deny it, he looks just like the bastard”. Ever since then, we all became close, I frequently stayed over the summer with Billy since then.
Suddenly the house phone rang
“I’ll be right back, alright?” Billy wheeled back into the house. I slowly turned my head, watching his silhouette roll toward the fridge.
The old man always did have something going on.
Billy had always been like a grandfather to me, and my family was special to him, my mom being too special if you ask me after I grew up a bit they got closer finding comfort in each other from being widows. My mom weirdly enough still talked about my dad she found herself kind of unable to forget the man she thought he was, she never spoke badly about him not with me around anyway, but she never discussed him near Sam or Embry, that was just the type of woman she was. Easy to fall in love with, hard to hate.
I looked through the kitchen window watching the strain on Billy’s face as he spoke angrily—he looked like as if a person grabbed him and shook him, . Looking back to the forest, I only sighed, looks like this summer was setting its self up to be very boring.
Little did I know it’d be anything but that.
“Billy if you just want to torture me, then do it the old-fashioned way and waterboard me, because this—“ I gestured to the living room I was sitting in “is just—inhumane”. The boredom was officially getting to me, it had been an eventful day of Billy sitting down at his dinner table going through his mail, and snacking on salted cashews out of his pantry, while I watched trash reality TV shows.
As entertaining as Tantrums and Tiaras could be, I could hardly say it was enough for a whole day of amusement, you could only hear so many screams before you started to cry yourself.
Usually, I would’ve been at Sam’s by now eating an assortment of meals Emily made since she was looking forward to my visit and especially what came in tow, high-school gossip. The rest of the day would’ve been lined up with something like soccer or driving around—forks honestly didn’t have much to do besides going to the beach, but somehow my family made it fun.
“ Do you think your mother would like these coasters I bought? She suggested they’d add more feng shui”
but instead I was sitting on Billy’s couch, snacking on hand fulls of baked chips and half a bowl of chili listening to his ideas on impressing my mom. Billy wasn’t much of a cook and hardly neither was I and I’m suffering for it. I groaned, Billy laughed
“ You know Sam isn’t as free as he used to be, the baby could come at any moment. He can’t just drop everything to come hang out with you” Any moment was a stretch, Emily was only 7 months but I didn’t deny his point after all my mom had popped me out during that spontaneous Forks visit having me at the forks community hospital and she was only 8 months, so really what did I know. “I still can’t believe he’s having a baby already, he’s only what? 25? He only got married a couple of years ago” But even so, is she so far along that no-one could even stop by and say a hello—or even call?
I sat up waltzing my way towards the fridge letting out a small whimper when I open to see there wasn’t much worth getting up for. “ How do you even live like this?” Billy chuckled adjusting his glasses while continuing to look through his mail. He glanced up at me, a smile gracing his face as he watched me lean over and press my head up against the cold fridge door “I don’t, people usually bring food to me” I snickered, a smile staying on my face even as I made my way back onto the couch. “ Guess todays not one of those days old man”
“ Guess not”
The time eventually went by as I laid on the couch, I ran through the chips and the chili with the only thing being left was an empty bag and my face of unwavering boredom. Billy sighed then paused looking blankly at his mail “I was actually gonna make a short visit to Sue’s, what do you say you tag along? But we’ll be taking your mom's car”
I jolted up “ Do you even need to ask?” I made my way over to my room but stopped to ask a curious question “Question, is she still Ms. Clearwater or is she now Mrs. Swan?” Billy contemplated before giving me a short response “Does it matter? You’re still gonna call her Sue anyway” We both laughed as I made my way into the room. But from the corner of my eye, I watched from the entrance, as Billy realized he was alone again his smile faded, and a deep sigh escaped his chest, mumbling one thing so softly.
“ I miss you Melanie”
I wonder what drove my mom away this time
…
“ Oh my goodness! Y/n is that really you! You’re basically a woman now, stop growing up so fast!” Sue wrapped me in a hug, soon pulling away to get a good look at my face while patting my head, moving my hair out of the way as she stared. “Wow, you really do look just like Sam!” What a lovely compliment that was, my hands immediately found hers slowly removing them as I gave her tight tight-lipped smile. She giggled with excitement, glancing over to Charlie who stood beside her.
He gave me a fond simile, greeting Billy with a couple of fake jabs. “ It was just yesterday you were asking to ride in my cop car so you could ‘help me catch the bad guys’ now you’re already head to head me”
Billy smiled looking up at me his eyes beaming like a proud father he patted my arm with joy. “Remember when she got her head stuck in a log?” He happily rejoiced and I snatched my arm away deciding it was time to ditch the group “ I’m taking my leave thank you” laughter was all I could hear as I went up those cement steps. At least everyone else remained in good spirits.
“ There’s some lunch out on the table! “
I had already found my way there, holding a sandwich with joy as I sat on the family couch looking at all the photos. There were pictures everywhere some old some new, but in front of me sat a picture of the clearwaters and a picture of Henry beside it, the two pictures weren’t anything professional, they were candid both having a bit of blur. Charlie sat at the dinner table playing uno with the whole family clearly winning while Leah seethed in the seat beside him, you could hardly make out Seth but he sat across from Charlie with over 20 cards in his hand hysterical at Leah’s losing streak, all the while Sue was taking the picture with genuine laugh escaping her mouth right as she snapped the photo.
It was perfectly imperfect, Henry’s picture was just as sweet, he sat in his chair sleeping away as Leah and Seth drew things on his face while Sue raised a thumb, and in the corner, there was a tiny note that read, Happy April fools we love you.
The clearwaters always were the sweetest.
I eventually found myself walking around, looking happily at all the pictures, Leah and Seth fishing with Charlie but it was more Leah sitting grumpily in the back with a fishing hat on while Seth and Charlie held up a large salmon. Another was Henry planting Sue a garden as Leah and Seth threw mulch at each other behind him. Further and further into the house pictures of Everyone came up, even I making an appearance, it was a picture of me grumpily staring at 8-year-old Sam and 1-year-old embry as he attempted to hold my hand as the adults laughed, it was sweet
I wandered my eyes catching the sight of a giant picture, one of the whole family. Without noticing I drifted to the photo standing on the steps star-strucked as everyone I remembered and slightly forgotten were all up there.
There stood Sam towering over everyone giving a small smile while Emily was on his side her stomach being held by Sam, the rest of the boys were huge, each and everyone one of them having a girl on their side besides a few. Leah sat on the opposite side deadpanned with reddish cheeks as a woman kissed her. While Billy sat beside my mom looking up at her as she leaned over and wrapped her arm around his neck using her other hand to gently place his hat on her head.
The photo was beautiful, I can’t even remember when my mom had time to do this.
The boys looked good, all of them growing to be people I hardly recognize, Collin and Brady were near Paul reaching his height in only a couple of months, while Rachel somehow got even hotter. The group of boys had always been close, sneaking off the Emily’s house to be shirtless and eat food like a bunch of weirdos. I always wondered why they all gravitated towards Sam no matter how little they knew him before, it honestly felt a bit strange—even cultish, I looked around for Seth but before I could even get a good look,
The stairs creaked and two boys came stomping down arguing with each other before coming to a halt. They stared at me, one of the boy's mouths opening as he came closer. “ No way, Y/n!”
“ Embry?! Quil?!”
Sam isn’t the only one who apparently changed, quil and Embry burst into laughter before they both wrapped me into a tight hug. “ Man, what the hell are you doing here? Is everything okay?” Words could barely even leave my mouth as I blinked at both of them. Had it been really that long? Embry was huge “ Y-yeah! It’s summer you know—why are you so big?” Quil laughed earning a punch from Embry “ I had no idea you were coming down this early! Does Sam know?” Seeing how he didn’t know, I had no idea if he did, it’s pretty obvious now that my mom didn’t mention the whole coming down thing to anyone besides Billy.
Honestly I’m a bit stunned
And I guess my face gave embry the idea that I was a little confused. “ How about we take a seat hm?” I nodded slowly stepping down the steps with Quils help.
I sat across from embry at a loss for words. “ Well, sis how have you been” he sat awkwardly twiddling his fingers before pushing his hair behind him—while Quill was simply cracking up. “ Why are you so big? Why is Quil so big, is Sam this big? Is he even bigger?” Embry sheepishly smiled, looking towards Quil for help as I continued “ When did you get so ripped? How is your hair so long? Are you on some meal plan-“,
“ Woah woah slow down N/n your going to fast”
Just then Sue walked in from her slide door her smile disappearing as she saw the two boys at her table. “ what did I say about coming here shirtless, I have guests!” Quil looked up with only a smirk “ Does Billy even count as a guest? “ Sue pursued her lips “ Not really but still!” Embry looked up to Sue raising an eyebrow “When were you gonna tell me Y/n was back in town? Does Sam know?” Sue sighed pulling the two boys up by the arm as she led them towards the outside back door, “ No he doesn’t, it’s a surprise!”
Just as she finished her sentence Billy had called, both of them giving an eye roll. Embry only waved at me mouthing out a love you before he was ushered out. Throughout their whole interaction, my eyebrows never stopped scrunching, and my confusion never left.
“ Why are they so big”
She ignored my question mumbling an apology as she fixed her chairs “ Sorry about those too!” I ignored it, my mind was racing with a million questions hitting me at once. “Do you not notice how big they are now? Or has it been such a long time?” Sue smiled patting my head as I looked at her with a look one would describe as jarring. “ I suppose they have gotten bigger even you don’t look quite the same yourself”
“ Yeah well, I didn’t grow 6ft in let’s say 9 months? Why is quil so hot?” Sue withdrew her hand giving me a small little smirk before promptly grabbing her keys, “ Not! like that Sue, his hand—it felt like I was touching the glass of a working oven, it’s like they’ve turned into Marvel superheroes”
Sue laughed at my comparison, handing me a container of sandwiches as she led me back outside towards the front yard. “Please don’t say that around embry his head will get big” I raised a brow “It’s the truth, they look like a real-life rendition of the super soldier experiment pecs and all, I was head to head with embryo before I left! Now his head is nearly grazing your ceiling” Sue placed a hand on my arm, giving me another smile “ As much as I would like to discuss the possibility of embry and quill being scientifically modified war soldiers, I have to take you back home, Billy has some business to take care of and can’t take you home and he doesn’t wanna leave you out alone”
My mind finally quieted down as I curiously looked for Billy “ can’t embry take me?” She begins walking down her steps waving her keys on her index as she walked the path “The boys left with Billy, so it’s just me sorry kid”
I stared blankly at Sue, not saying anything as I’m following her to her parked car.
It has come to my realization that everyone is a lot stranger than last summer and no one is seeing it but I. Embry never left me alone when I came down here, what’s with everyone—what’s with the sudden change?
“ You coming?”
“ Do I actually have a choice?”
“Hmm no!”
I sighed as I reached her car but as soon as I grabbed the handle Sue suddenly placed a hand over mine, her face already reeking of bad ideas “Say, has your mom taught you how to drive yet?”
“Yeah, Yeah we made it—she’s fine, the drive was easy”
Well everything’s easy when your not the one doing the work isn’t it? I still have a migraine from when I nearly ran into the trees.
I watched Sue’s shadow as she stood in the kitchen catching up with Charlie, she was waiting on Billy. Meanwhile, I was sitting in front of the living room TV on the floor hanging up another call after reaching my mom's voicemail again while simultaneously and very unenthusiastically watching the Forks news.
“Switch the channel! I don’t like that reporter!” Sue yelled
It wasn’t anything special just a very pale yet beautiful man being appreciated for his contributions to the city, “Alright, give me a sec!” forks news was always more of a blog than news, just last summer their biggest story was a string of mysterious late-night ding-dong ditches throughout the whole neighborhood it had been going on for months before the culprit was finally caught through a newly installed security system, turns out it was just a inquisitive wolf who liked bell ringing, I retyped my moms number.
The call went to voicemail again
I sighed it was 20th call towards mom and yet she hadn’t picked up a single one of them.
I placed the phone back on the table, leaning my head back in frustration. It wasn’t necessarily uncommon for my mom to disappear like this but she never ghosted me this hard—it honestly felt like she was just abandoning me like she used to when I was kid, I wasn’t sad just annoyed she could waste a perfectly good weekend on work leaving me here with suddenly grandpa Billy.
It didn’t make sense why she wouldn’t pick up, she hadn’t done this for years but somehow it felt like my childhood all over again, minus the free candy and play dates with Sam and Embry.
As I stood up, the usual howls began singing into the night. I reached over ready to shut off the TV. Sue walked in with the first frown I’d seen all day she even seemed angry
“I told you to turn it off N/n”
“I was-“
“ This just in, authorities have discovered the body of 24-year-old Amanda Bennet at 8:09 p.m. She had been missing since last night and was last seen at her job closing up shop. The scene has been described as horrific, and investigators are working urgently to determine the cause of death and identify any suspects involved, she was the local cashier.”
“ what the fuck?”
And just like that, forks wasn’t so sweet anymore.

…
The suv creaked it’s tires scratching against the gravel as it stopped at a red light, they were old having plenty of plugs littered across its wheel. It paired with the car an old model that’s seen better days the window’s having little anime characters on the side and some permanent drawings on the doors.
A woman’s arm hung on the window, her other hand nitpicking her daughter’s face. She sat relaxed one knee being up against her chest as she leaned back on the seat “ Where did all these bumps come from? What did you do—have you been using my soap to wash your face? “ She was throughly unamused. Y/n let out a snicker softly swatting her mothers hand away “I didn’t do anything! It’s just the dry air breaking me out” she loudly yelled swiftly turing her head to the distance. She could hardly hide her embarrassment—she may have, possibly—been using her mother’s soap against her wishes, but was to prideful to admit her mother was right.
Ms. L/n withdrew her hand eyeing her young daughter “Just like your father” Y/n only stuck her tongue out towards the remark.
The trees swayed in the wind as they drove by, La push had the smell of salt in the air. The sight was beautiful grey skies and tall trees, stores lined up against each other, la push felt like summer. Y/n swayed her head to the radio it was playing a somber tune, She smiled as a wave of nostalgia hit her, childhood memories coming back remembering the times of following billy around, he took you everywhere.
The duo smiled as they parked into a green yard, a long haired man rolled out greeting them as they stepped out. “ Billy!” Both girls shouted as they ran towards the man billy let out a boisterous laugh as he felt the arms of both the girls wrap around him “ You girl’s are to big for this” Y/n and her mother pull away pouting at their reminder of their age. “ You’re almost seventeen–“ She frowns and begins playing dejectedly her hair “—And you, thirty-three! “
The color from Ms. L/n face drops her face turing red with embarrassment she clears her throat before standing straight fixing her wounded expression “ that was uncalled for”. Billy chuckled shaking his head seeing how the girls haven’t change a bit he gestured towards the girls to follow him inside, Y/n gave a smile looking around as she stepped into the house, everything stayed the same, pictures of Mrs. Black being hung up on the wall as you entered, the smell of lavender warming up against your nose—candles being left out from the night before just like Mrs.black used to. “You know where everything is already, Don’t be afraid to get comfortable—” before he could even finish his sentence the girls dispersed from behind him Y/n making her way to the pantry while her mother got to putting luggage away.
Billy smiled, before helping Ms. L/n with unpacking.
Y/n watched them from her peripheral vision, seeing the loud laughter turn into tense smiles and uneasy chuckles.
The house was bustling with energy as the Tv sung loudly with sports chants and cheers Billy an Ms. L/N sat on the couch yelling and cheering for their respective teams, stupid merch on both of them. This could only bring a smile on Y/n’s face—the kitchen was fogged up with steam, delicious scents taking over the home, seasonings were lined up next to each other as different pots were filled with something Y/n stood tapping her finger on the counter waiting for everything to finish cooking, her beads of sweat dripping off of her forehead onto the hot kitchen floor.
She began taking out servings, filling Billy’s plate with the biggest piece of salmon before setting his bowl at the table. She set her mothers plate next giving her vegetables all over her rice and salmon, lastly platting herself which was nothing more than a plate of rice with chicken “ Ma, Billy! I’m done”
They sat down billy gave a giant smile looking down at his dinner“ you’ve gotten better! I remember you used to leave the scales on and burn it “ She laughed remembering her younger years of cooking “all you would have to eat was the charred remains! “ Billy turned towards Y/n’s mother giving her a warm look “better than this one! she didn’t even know how to thaw the meat just throw it straight into the pan” he softly ruffled her hair.
Ms. L/n laughed, “ You say it like your any better—“ her mouth filled with rice “ I know the truth you did it that way until Mrs. Black showed you how and that wasn’t until college!”
Billy looked away ignoring her words
“ Do you feel a draft in here Y/n? I must’ve left a window open”
Ms. L/n simply mocked him snickering as he gave a fake shiver.
Dinner wrapped up as everyone in the house was getting ready for bed, Y/n leaned on the counter wiping the dishes her mother passed to her when she finished washing, a howl rang out faintly being heard deep in the forest Ms. L/n gave a hum. “ How’s Jacob these days? “ Y/n eyes squinted as she secretly watched Billy’s expression—her tone seemed more strenuous than before, what’s with the sudden interest in Jacob?
Billy gave a weak smile towards her mother, before making eye contact with y/n, her eyes drifting away staring at the oven clock —10pm. “ Y/n, you can take a shower first I’ll clean everything up” she didn’t argue only nodding her head this happened often with every visit since she could remember—the mentioning of Jacob always changed the air in the house making everyone feel uneasy. As Y/n reached the bathroom door she heard hushed whispers tones of confusion and worry
“ He’s with a what!? “
“ Keep your voice down—I don’t want Y/n involved any more than she already is”
“ She isn’t—I know she isn’t”
Y/n eyebrows furred, this wasn’t new for her when it came to those two growing up she fondly remembered the nights where the living room light creaked into her room. Her mother and billy staying up for hours at a time sipping on wine and retelling stories from their younger years even sometimes having mentions of her father—
“ I thought the same for Jacob but now look at him”
—But as the years went by the joyous laughter turned serious, and the nights went from inebriated bliss to scared low murmurs. A name becoming more and more frequent as the years came and went.
Bloodsuckers.
Howls sung into the night drowning out the whispers taking her chance she crept into the bathroom glancing at the picture of a young boy shoved into the corner of the mirror it was Jacob black.
A boy she hadn’t seen for years.
“ Jacob black, what happened to you?”
…
The night was silent trees swaying as the wind blew heavily against them, the moon was full having a yellowish tint to it, things lurked in the trees surrounding the red quaint home.
Y/n laid in her bed tossing and turning as the room felt extremely warm, she couldn’t get ounce of sleep feeling to uncomfortable to properly rest.
“ This is bigger than I thought billy”
Mrs. L/n mumbled her hands trembling, she fidgeted with her jackets zipper her blood running cold. “ Their coming billy and I can’t take her with me” billy nervously looked into the deep forest behind his home hearing sounds of rustling all around them “ But what about Y/n?”
“ you can’t just leave her Melanie”
She softly looked at the purple door behind her giving a saddened expression “ It’s for the best billy, what more can I do? it’s either her or me.” Though billy didn’t show it his heart snapped, only giving her a saddened expression, “ what will you tell her? She’s not five anymore Mel’ she nervously paced her hands rubbing against her neck “ She’s an understanding girl bill’ she won’t look deep into it” Melanie sat at the edge of a couch handle her eyes heavy with bags “ keep her safe billy”
She glanced into his eyes before asking him one final favor.
“Please, don’t let her find out.”
Billy didn’t say a word only holding her shivering hand giving it a tight squeeze, she knew he’d keep his word.
Ms. L/n grabbed everything she could and hastily ran out the door recording a voicemail for her daughter.
Her only daughter.
Billy wheeled out of his house watching the woman walk into the darkness of the night, his heart aching with each step. Only now letting out a baited breath he didn’t even know he was holding , whispering something into the air he hoped she’d hear
“ Stay safe Melanie“
“Sorry this is so sudden Y/n but the office called and they really need me something about a slip up in the spreadsheets I know I know this week was our get-away week but it was really urgent I need to fly back soon as tomorrow. But I promise I’ll make this up to you okay? I will, your gonna have to stay with bill for a bit okay? Like the old times, tell billy if you need anything don’t have to much fun without me, mommy loves you, stay safe.”
The sunshine creaked through the windows rays hitting Y/n’s eyes, her door creaked open and she groaned before sitting up being met with a smiling billy with breakfast in hand.
“Hope you like pancakes”
Y/n only snickered.
“do you even need to ask?”
The car was still outside.
