Tony Winner Shoshana Bean
musical categories at the tonys this year
throwing my tony predictions/tony hopes and dreams under a readmore so I can come back and see how wrong I was after June 7th 😌
Best Musical
The Lost Boys Schmigadoon! Titanique Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)
the only viable option imo! titanique and two strangers both have a lot going for them in different ways but schmigadoon is by far the best candidate. (and the lost boys...is also there!)
Best Revival of a Musical
CATS: The Jellicle Ball Ragtime The Rocky Horror Show
as pissed as I am that the ragtime revival didnt bother to put together a real set between the uber-successful city center concert version and the lincoln center opening, the cast is perfect and I cried a normal amount.
that being said, the jellicle ball is FANTAAAAAASTIC and I wouldn't be mad at all if it won! (and I haven't seen rocky horror so I dont get to have an opinion!)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical
Nicholas Christopher, Chess Luke Evans, The Rocky Horror Show Joshua Henry, Ragtime Sam Tutty, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) Brandon Uranowitz, Ragtime
other four guys shouldn't even bother writing a speech tbh. which sucks to say because other four guys are working REAL hard and doing some REAL special stuff but. Joshua Henry Coalhouse Walker is unfortunately putting us in a hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby situation.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical
Sara Chase, Schmigadoon! Stephanie Hsu, The Rocky Horror Show Caissie Levy, Ragtime Marla Mindelle, Titanique Christiani Pitts, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)
my GOD is marla mindelle a genius, holy shit. the fact that she (co)created titanique and is also the gorgeous talented hilarious star who does multiple improv stretches every single show is bullshit. you cant be good at Everything!!!!!
Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical
Ali Louis Bourzgui, The Lost Boys Andre De Shields, CATS: The Jellicle Ball Bryce Pinkham, Chess Ben Levi Ross, Ragtime Layton Williams, Titanique
he is not going to win but he should!!!!!!!! thats my boy!!!!!!! thats monty navarro!!!!!
in reality I think maybe andre de shields takes this one, partly because he's great in cats and partly because he's an eightysomething theater legend? but honestly I think all five of these guys are doing tony-worthy stuff.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical
Shoshana Bean, The Lost Boys Hannah Cruz, Chess Rachel Dratch, The Rocky Horror Show Ana Gasteyer, Schmigadoon! Nichelle Lewis, Ragtime
NNNNNNOBODY WINS. I YANK THE TONY OUT OF THE PRESENTER'S HANDS AND GIVE IT TO MCKENZIE KURTZ MYSELF FOR SCHMIGADOON. HOW THE FUCK WASN'T SHE NOMINATED!!!!!!!
(...Nichelle Lewis should and probably will take it. all five ladies very talented. but Mckenzie Kurtz WILL be avenged by my sword.)
Best Book of a Musical
David Hornsby and Chris Hoch, The Lost Boys Cinco Paul, Schmigadoon! Marla Mindelle, Constantine Rousouli, and Tye Blue, Titanique Jim Barne and Kit Buchan, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)
The book of Titanique is a terminally online work of art. they reference the "BUT he's gay excuse me he's blind" clip. there's a ten minute rupaul's drag race parody sequence. a cutout of Patti LuPone is there. some shows feel like soulless money-printing machines (cough lost boys cough); with other shows, like Titanique, you can feel how much fucking fun and joy and love went into the script. I love you weird gay people <3
Best Scenic Design of a Musical
dots, The Rocky Horror Show Soutra Gilmour, Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) Rachel Hauck, CATS: The Jellicle Ball Dane Laffrey, The Lost Boys Scott Pask, Schmigadoon!
I finally have something nice to say about the lost boys! the set is fucking insane. three stories of a house fly in and out like they're weightless. visually stunning. wish the rest of it wasn't a mess!
Best Costume Design of a Musical
Linda Cho, Ragtime
Linda Cho, Schmigadoon!
Qween Jean, CATS: The Jellicle Ball
Ryan Park, The Lost Boys
David I. Reynoso, The Rocky Horror Show
if this one doesnt go to cats I dont know what we're doing here. but man go Linda Cho for being nominated for TWO shows in the same season!

brief play opinions, even though I haven't seen enough of the nominated plays to give real guesses -
Oedipus was Fine, I dont totally understand why it got the raves that it did. Oedipus eating out his mom was very funny. the blinding sequence was disappointingly tame. I kind of wanted to be more disturbed or upset overall?
The Balusters was a great time, very funny and well-written, but I do feel like I've seen this exact play one thousand million times before. if you're going to do a Liberal Hypocrisy Play, I think you need to go bigger with it. every character was a predictable type and the drama was pretty meh.
Proof was great! I'm baffled that it was completely shut out from nominations!
okay not terrible! 5/9 correct picks for musicals!
Best Musical
Correctly picked Schmigadoon!
Best Revival of a Musical
Correctly picked Ragtime!
Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical
Correctly picked Joshua Henry, Ragtime!
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical
Incorrectly picked Marla Mindelle, Titanique!
to be fair Caissie Levy was the obvious choice and I'm happy for her! but I do still think Marla Mindelle deserved it and I wish Titanique had won something :(
Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical
Incorrectly picked Bryce Pinkham, Chess!
and I knew there was no way in hell he would win. but in my heart. in my heart he won.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical
Incorrectly picked Nichelle Lewis, Ragtime!
I'm actually pretty surprised that Shoshana Bean won here! considering she's been an incredibly hardworking and respected broadway actress for two decades, this feels like a 'you deserve a Tony in general' award rather than a 'your performance specifically in Lost Boys is Tony worthy' award. either way, she's definitely earned it.
Best Book of a Musical
Incorrectly picked Marla Mindelle, Constantine Rousouli, and Tye Blue, Titanique!
not mad at Schmigadoon winning, although damn this year was a total schmig sweep! I dont think two strangers, rocky horror, or titanique took home a single award!
Best Scenic Design of a Musical
Correctly picked Dane Laffrey, The Lost Boys!
I mean yeah. look at it.
Best Costume Design of a Musical
correctly picked Qween Jean, CATS: The Jellicle Ball!
extremely deserved. it is, however, driving me crazy that every broadway outlet is reporting this as the first time an out trans person has won a Tony. we've had multiple trans Tony winners in literally the past few years? Cole Escola and Alex Newell off the top of my head? but whatever, still very cool!
after a lifetime of making fun of women who swoon at the phantom of the opera, and having just seen an immersive production where the phantom offered me his arm to cross a room and then tenderly touched my face….starting to get it.

I was looking up James Ortiz, the puppet designer of/puppeteer of/voice of Rocky in Project Hail Mary, and -
this mfer created the scrungly as hell Milky White puppet from the Sara Bareilles revival of Into The Woods! icon!!
Rest in Peace, Tony.
I'll always remember your smile.

Obsessed with how some people get so attached to their own headcanons that they get mad when they see a character presented as they are in canon

resurrected dead wife watching her own montage: wow I looked so hot in that
And brother, thus begins the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice! every principal orpheus and eurydice on broadway, 2019-2025
I never had a best friend. So, I just relied more and more on the Little Debbies, and it was as much for me as it was for them. But then I met you. And I didn’t need them so much anymore. Well, makes sense. I’m your number one fan.
