chrishaz.. chrishaz i miss you please come back ☹️☹️☹️
Y'know, with the whole yoai vs yuri debate, I almost feel like near exlusively shipping M/F wraps round to being progressive cause you can always be sure you've got a numerically equal gender balance among your ships
To my followers, it's less than a week to go now, so here is your warning:

5'6 is the annoying middle ground hight where you're not so short you've given up on the dream of being able to see at a gig and just try to make the most of it, but also short enough likely your view will be at least partially blocked
I'm melting, but these characters aren't gonna get into bed together all by themselves
Shaz Granger canonically doesn't shave her bush, and I think that's beautiful
you know that feeling were you're like 'This won't be much, only a little ficlet, it'll struggle to get over 1k words', and then you reach 1k and realise how much you've written and how much is left to go, and it's like ah

It's been a while since I've done a rewatch of ashes to ashes but I've seen a number of people on tiktok say how annoying they found Alex in season 1 especially, that she was really whiny and pissed them off. Maybe I'm missing something but at no point did I find her irritating or whiny. And also ffs she essentially just lost her daughter, so she'd have good reason even if she was.
...sounds like misogyny to me tbh
So this was gonna be a comment but it got way too long so now it's a reblog.
Anyways, here's two cents (pennies?) from someone who personally did find Alex irritating and whiny. I think it is because of misogyny, but from the writers.
Alex is, (in my opinion) not supposed to be a good person at the start of the show, because she has to grow into the best version of herself over the course of the show, but that doesn't mean she can't be likable to watch. Unfortunately, she's written to play into the 'hysterical female' stereotype, to get a laugh out of a presumed male audience, which trivialises the actual issues she does through, and makes it harder to sympathise for her.
Also, in my opinion, her relationship with Molly is nowhere near enough fleshed out- Molly barely feels like her own character to me- so while in real life, a daughter loosing her mother is terrible, in a fictional show I struggle to feel as concerned as I should. Despite having a few key ones, in my opinion the show way undersells the female relationships until series 3 (with Shaz and Alex.)
It's hard to explain why Alex is less likeable than Sam to me despite them ostensibly being very similar on paper. but there are small differences in the way they are written, framed an directed that sell her short. I guess it comes down to the fact that despite his shortcomings, we are supposed to relate to Sam, whereas I don't think in series one of Ashes we are intended to project onto Alex, at least not to the same extent- for a clear example, see the ways in which she is objectified for the audience's supposed 'gratification'. If anything, the influence of the male gaze in the show positions the audience to empathise with Gene rather than Alex- or at the least, it makes it apparent that Alex as a character is filtered through a layer of sexist bias. male characters (a.k.a Gene) absolutely do the same, even worse than Alex, but I genuinely think in ashes to ashes, at least the first series, they are genuinely afforded more empathy for doing what they do than Alex, and that informs the way they are viewed and interpreted by viewers. (not me personally though, as much as I dislike Alex in Series 1, Gene is so much worse.)
Plus I hate to say it, but whether or not it was 'good', or her decision or the director's, the energy of Keely's performance is... different from the rest of the cast, which doesn't help, and somewhat plays into the 'hysterical female' trope (although because of that I'm inclined to believe it was how she was directed).
That being said, the initial backlash to Alex Drake back in the day was absolutely fueled by misogyny from viewers. Also, I think probably a lot of modern fans who aren't necessarily sexist themselves might find her unlikable without potentially realising the misogyny-biased creative choices that make them feel that way.
Also on a non-sexism related note, one major difference Sam and Alex have is that while both are rule obsessed, Sam doesn't break said rules as frequently, and when he does, it's a big deal for him- for example binning Raymes' doctors letter, or letting Joni stay round his flat, or lying to his mum to get her to talk to him. Alex on the other hand is very rule obsessed and controlling, but herself constantly breaks the rules and acts generally inappropriately for her role. It's never really addressed and explained as to why she's does it, which makes her come off entitled and hypocritical- no character flaw is inherently off the table, but I think those traits are two of the hardest for a lot of people to get along with.
Mmmm today feels like a good day to rewatch a favourite of mine
