THE PAST WEEK HAD BEEN THE WEIRDEST OF HIS LIFE. and that was a big deal considering he had quite literally died and then practically come back to life so many years later. ever since the situation in the garage after the orpheum show, the boys had been visible to more than just julie — most catching on to their ghostly traits fairly quickly and agreeing to keep it to themselves while others were still none the wiser, still only able to see them when they were on stage with their instruments. though trying to figure out who could see him all of the time was a difficult feat, it was also how his friendship with charlie becker had kicked off. the girl catching him observing dirty candy in the middle of one of their performances and only agreeing to keep their secret if he answered all of her questions. which he was more than happy to do with the answers that he had at the time. even if that meant enduring her endless questions about alex’s bestfriends and bandmates.

SINCE FINDING OUT that they had to complete their unfinished business and cross over in order to put an end to the jolts, the mood between the phantoms had been less than joyful. a mix of worry and uncertainty, the guilt at leaving behind julie after becoming so close, completely overshadowing the concept of them actually managing to be onstage at the orpheum and playing a show — just as they were supposed to do the night that they had died. taking a moment to just sit in the empty arena before the show, thinking everything over in his head, until he was joined by willie. the poof beside him being enough to startle him ever so slightly but not enough to completely knock the frown from his lips. head turning towards the figure beside him, a pang of guilt over the skater being dragged into this mess striking him at almost the same time as another jolt. a hand coming up to hold the sensitive area of his chest with a quiet groan. eyes slowly trailing over the features of willie’s face as if he was making mental notes, knowing it was a face he’d never want to forget whenever they headed wherever ghosts went when they crossed over. the thought that alex had been so much trouble for him to handle ever since day one crossing his mind.

THIS WASN’T UNUSUAL FOR ALEX. for reggie to show up at the mercer household, visibly unsettled, whenever his parents found themselves in the midst of a big row. their years of friendships meaning that the blond’s parents were more than welcoming to the younger boy, even more so upon discovering the situation that he had fled from at home. allowing him inside and guiding him up the stairs ( despite the factor that he had been to the house on more occasions than he could count and probably knew it like the back of his hand ) before gathering everything that he would need for his bestfriend to feel comfortable and at least a little bit happier. his favourite movies, favourite snacks, the comfiest blankets that alex and his family had to offer. moving to sit beside him on the edge of the bed only a few moments later, an arm gently wrapping around the boy’s shoulders.
“ well, I hope you know how proud I am you were created. ”
WILLIE.
The question was almost humorous to the skater. Where else would Alex be? Willie would have thought the answer to that one was glaringly obvious. He was dangerous to be around, hadn’t he proven that much? All he ever did was screw up his relationships, whether he was alive or dead, that seemed to be one thing that never changed. And the one connection that he’d finally managed to form after decades in this hell on earth was one that he had already succeeded in fucking up.
“In a perfect afterlife, you would have moved on,” Willie points out, rubbing his arm gently before applying a gentle pressure there, trying to alleviate some of the anxiety that was currently building inside of him. “But since that didn’t work out, I would have assumed that I would be the last person that you wanted to continue to see. Don’t you know how dangerous I am when it comes to you?”
willie had warned alex time and time again that being in his presence would be dangerous and that it was best to keep his distance — and it wasn’t that the drummer hadn’t been listening, but he disagreed with the warning wholeheartedly. sure. caleb covington was always going to be hanging over their heads, but surely there wasn’t much more he could do to them. of course in saying that, alex even doubted himself. knowing that caleb would stop at no costs to get what he wanted and god forbid anyone or anything that stood in his way in the process. but that didn’t change the way that the drummer felt, whether that made him courageous and brave or just plain old stupid. while he physically still could, there wasn’t anything that would physically stop him from searching for the skater.
“ haven’t you heard? perfect doesn’t exist. ” maybe now wasn’t the time to make jokes but alex was just trying to lift the mood, even just a little bit. his gaze dropping to the floor as he noticed willie’s actions — recognising it as something that he had done himself a billion times over the years whenever he felt anxious or scared. “ I’ve told you repeatedly that I don’t blame you for any of this, willie. none of us do. you’re the only one here that insists us not seeing each other is a good idea. ” carefully shifting the sit beside willie, the blond sighed softly. removing his cap and just allowing his blond tresses to fall. “ and I’m sure that whatever danger comes our way, we can deal with this together. ”
JULIE.
when she gets home from school, julie allows the last bits of energy she has to carry her up to her room. before she even opens her door, she can hear someone else already inside and unsurprisingly it’s alex, watching netflix; specifically beverly hills 90210. julie laughs as her bookbag drops to the floor, quickly moving to join him on the bed. “ what happened to binging this together? ” she teases.
lucky for him she’d already seen it, and julie could understand that unlimited time to do you wanted might get a little boring. there was also an added assumption that whatever luke and reggie were doing, alex had no interest in it. “ did your parents even let you watch this when it was on? it doesn’t exactly scream… wholesome. ” julie didn’t know too much about alex’s past, but from the things he’s said and other context clues, his family didn’t seem to lack in strict discipline or cookie-cutter ideologies.
the summers spent together were great but when julie finally returned back to school in the fall, that was when the effects of not actually being alive began to hit the boys the most. while they loved one another and were extremely grateful to be tethered together during such big life changes, even they needed time apart every now and then. luke often visiting his parents, reggie sneaking into a puppy shelter without being caught while alex typically chose to spend his time with willie until the school day came to an end — until his time with the skater was cut short by an emergency call back to the hollywood ghost club. leaving the blond low on ideas to occupy the time, therefore choosing to just poof back to the molina household and catch up on one more episode ( which turned into four or five ) of whatever show he and julie were watching this week. glancing up as he heard the voice, an innocent smile plastering across his lips. “ I know, but I just couldn’t help myself . . . I’m sorry. ”
alex couldn’t help but chuckle at the question, instantly shaking his head. “ not at all — not even a little bit. ” unlike ray molina, the mercers weren’t so laid back and fun. the drummer’s own childhood and experiences in life being far different from anything that he had witnessed with julie and her family. “ my dad didn’t even like me watching full house because of the three guys raising the kids . . . that’s what sleepovers at reggie’s house were for. ” the nights the boys had spent in blanket forts taking their turns to watch supposedly inappropriate tv shows and sci-fi movies to distract them from their own problems were endless. it was situations like these where he didn’t miss his parents, now that he was surrounded by love and support. now that he could watch teen drama shows whenever he felt like it. “ I like this one though. ”
JULIE.
“ oh, don’t look at me like that, i’m not taking sides —– but you’re both being super dramatic, you know that, right ? “
alex couldn’t help but to sink back into the cushioned seat of the molina’s sofa as julie’s words sounded. a quiet but particularly defeated groan slipping from his lips at the fact that she was right — that julie molina was always right. especially when it came to the boys. willie had pointed out the exact same thing when the blond had approached with his famous pout and puppy dog eyes, looking for sympathy. ultimately failing to gain it. “ willie said the exact same thing too. ” the boys had known each other for so long and been through such big changes together that petty arguments like this happened almost daily with them. they were never too serious, but always lasted just long enough for them to sit around and pout for a fair amount of time. “ all I asked was for you to agree with me and go tell reggie that grease is a better movie than star wars . . . movie wars continue if you don’t. ”

HOW COULD HE EVEN HAVE THE AUDACITY TO SAY THAT? the words caused him to scoff as he shook his head, hands anxiously pulling at the sleeves of his jumper. all alex had tried to do was get on with his life the best he possibly could, just like willie had insisted he do a billion times — alex had tried to stay. to fight. to keep the skater in his life, yet he was just continuously told of how dangerous it was. “ isn’t this what you wanted me to do? ” after everything that had gone down with caleb and the club stamps, the drummer had been more than forgiving and ready to move past it but all attempts had gone unwanted. “ every single day since we went our separate ways, I have been thinking about you. I haven’t stopped . . . I can’t stop. being on stage with the band and acting like everything is okay is the only way I’m coping right now, willie. ”

A SOFT CHUCKLE FELL FROM HIS LIPS. the offer being a nice one if it was truly needed but one that surely wouldn’t end well for either of them in the long run. who had allowed two sixteen years old boys to think that hiking the hollywood hills in the middle of the summer was a good idea? an escape from their parents and the not-so-fun situations that they had going on at home but one that would leave them practically out of breath and exhausted before they ever even reached the top. but it would all be worth it in the eyes of buffing up . . . right? moving to lean against the nearest rock, alex unfastened his jacket from around his waist ( clearly not dressed adequately enough for the weather or current choice of activity ) and to double check that his fanny pack was still fastened firmly across his chest. “ you don’t have to carry me . . . just give me a second . . . I just need to catch my breath. ”

THIS WAS A WEIRD FEELING FOR ALEX. not only did they live in los angeles where the heat was blaring most of the time, but they were ghosts. and while their new ghostly lifestyle didn’t come with a book of rules and things to know, the drummer was almost certain that they weren’t meant to be affected by the weather. yet here he was. stood in the middle of sunset boulevard, shivering like he was stood in a freezer. ever since that one night after the orpheum show, things that they thought they knew — all of the things that they had adjusted to since poofing straight into julie’s garage that night — had been turned on their head. no longer applying to the situation. the boys having to deal with everything new. glancing over at reggie, the blond shook his head slightly with a thankful smile. “ nah, you should keep it, reg. I’m sure it’ll pass. plus . . . I don’t quite think I can pull off the leather jacket quite as well as you do. ”

HIS ENTIRE FACE LIT UP WITH THE BRIGHTEST SMILE. the simple act from his bestfriend raising the odd question but nothing in comparison to the happiness that it made him feel. especially as it wasn’t exactly out of the ordinary for reggie peters to do something like this after all of the time that they had known each other and been bestfriends. “ you know how much I love you, peters? ”
