Heyo, just curious, is there anything actually wrong with caving (when ofc, done with permission from your local conservation agency) or is it just something people don't like? I have never been able to understand why people treat it like summoning the devil lol (I'm being genuine here so sorry if this is an odd question)

oh yeah no i’m not talking about it from an environmental/conservation standpoint, i don’t know enough about that to say but afaik if it’s cleared for caving you’re not hurting anything i just think it’s scary and i think that’s what most people are saying when they express similar things

and tbf i do actually agree with that one saying about how the most dangerous part of a caving trip is the drive to the cave entrance. however i personally have experienced both a) almost sliding off a cliff in a car and b) a completely successful and uneventful caving trip but it had a horizontal passage where i could feel the rock on my chest and my back at the same time. and i’ll give you one guess which one FELT more like i was going to die

well yes i am joking but also i’m not kidding. i had this whole rambling thinkpiece locked and loaded about how every software company on earth seems to have forgotten that internet use as a leisure activity is voluntary and that social media got popular because it at least FELT like people were on there. and how it’s finally starting to click for me that no, i really *don’t* care what’s on twitter or instagram or facebook or tiktok or youtube as much as i used to, because interaction no longer implicitly means people.

it’s not about how likely any given thing is to be fake, not really. odds still are a real person wrote that tweet, or drew that picture, or made that comment, or left that review. it’s just that the ONLY reason it EVER mattered that the pixels on my screen were displaying various images or words was the (near) guarantee that those things represented the conscious intention of a living human person somewhere. even if they were a total stranger, even if they were lying. as soon as you take away that certainty, there’s no reason to care at all. you see what i’m saying here? this isn’t a matter of ethics or artistic integrity or all that higher reasoning shit, genai content is shooting itself in the foot at the level of *the basic human need for connection* and taking everything it touches off the table as a source of the exact dopamine hits that got the whole world glued to computers in the first place.

and basically i don’t have any immediate plans to leave but i keep finding myself seriously thinking about a future that’s *less* online instead of more, when for so long the increasing pervasiveness of the internet in our lives has seemed immutable and inevitable. and maybe that won’t happen on a societal scale anytime soon, but there’s lots of ways i could take more of my own life offline, and genai has effectively wiped out most of the reasons not to. even the ‘shallow’, ‘lazy’, or silly or irrational reasons. maybe especially those ones.

I’ve also thought a lot about “lightweight” versions of word/excel which seem to not really exist(?) afaik, but i think there are technically alternatives to photoshop (not as powerful) like paint.net or gimp.

When started wanting to write more, i found Focus Writer which you can kinda turn all the bells and whistles off for compared to word, but it has more vibes and power than notepad, so maybe that’s a thing.

see usually when i’m a little hater about a show that isn’t my thing i’m doing so from a place of near comical ignorance of the actual material. however due to recent events i found myself in possession of about 20 oxycontins and instructions to take them every 4-6 hours while sitting on my ass for days on end, which allowed me to get a full season and a half into the apothecary diaries before i ran out of prescription narcotics and realized all at once that i was having an absolutely horrible time and had been since episode one. the problem is i now cannot even speak about that show without devolving into “and ANOTHER THING i can’t stand—“ type diatribes that make it very obvious i watched quite a lot of it, and basically
