For those of you who aren’t aware the Monterey Bay Aquarium is actually a really cool place!

• they are non-profit

• they have a living kelp forest!

• it focuses on local ocean wildlife

• they were the first aquarium to get a great white shark to eat and they are the only public aquarium to display a great white shark for more than sixteen days

• they have a seafood watch program where they promote sustainable seafood

• they are actively fighting against ocean pollution

So yeah support them, they’re awesome and I love them

They’re also one of the few, if not the only facility that has a foster and re-release program for orphaned sea otter pups! Sea otter pups are entirely dependent on their moms for the first 6 months of their life at least, so any rescued pups are usually deemed non-releasable as they have to be raised by humans and therefore don’t develop all the skills they would need to survive in the wild. At MBA, however, they rescue enough sea otters that they’ve developed and maintained a foster program where older resident sea otter females essentially adopt a pup and teach it to be an otter before the aquarium releases it. It’s highly innovative and adorable! And sea otters are such an important keystone species because without them sea urchins would decimate kelp forests, which are home and food for lots of marine life. So yeah! These places are great and deserve all the support.
