People love dead Jews but they also love dead Black Civil Rights leaders because if MLK hadn't been assassinated, the white left would be treating him like they treat Jim Clyburn right now.
Me, passing a car covered in horny thirst-trap anime girl stickers: while I personally find this to be cringe, given the national push for censorship, I must concede that this is technically Praxis.
something something, protecting annoying people from dangerous policies
Let the record show that the specific vehicle that inspired me to make this post was, as a point of fact, owned and operated by a girl. I got a tattoo from her.
There are two types of anti zutara kataang shippers. The virtue signaller who openly pisses on the poor, and the one who doesn't even try.
Something about this recent wave of anti-ZK hate has really gotten me on my last nerve. Like, these are people who have irrevocably won the ship war, Kataang is canon! And yet, they are furious at us for like... not giving up or something?!
We're just trying to mind our own business, write our little fics and make our little drawings and enjoy the dynamic between these two characters, imagining what things could've been like if they were a couple, but somehow that is a capital offense deserving of hate.
But then if you ask the Enlightened Centrists over in the ATLA genpop, both sides are at fault, because apparently criticizing the show is the same level of "Bad" as harassing real people for their shipping preferences.
Yeah, like the show is over, and I can count at least 2 major revivals of this shipping war.
Like, I will always see Kataang shippers talking shit about Zutara shippers (and like, I can believe there will be rotten eggs everywhere, theoretically), but for the life of me, I had quite a hard time finding those "evil Zutarians that piss on the floor" when interacting with this fandom and only heard second-hand rumors about them being awful. It also doesn't help that once I did get to see the Zutara shippers that seemingly are controversial, it turns out they aren't even as bad as they were portrayed as, and more often than not, it was Kataang's hippers that ended up acting wicked and spiteful because Zutara shippers still just...exist. Like I myself lately got in a lot of fights defending Zutara, and Kataangers really brought me back to middle school.
A lot of the "bad behavior" from zutara shippers that we get accused of is people willfully misunderstanding the argument. The top post in the screenshot above was complaining about zutara shippers using momtara and dadko in a shippy way because Katara being parentified is tragic, and like...yes? Zutara shippers also think this. In fact, they were the ones who said it first. Momtara and dadko are cute shippy nicknames, yes, but they arose from zutara shippers turning to Zuko as someone who helps ease that burden off of Katara.
The last tag about Zuko's actions not being ignored doesn't seem to have anything to do with that argument at all? How is people using momtara and dadko erasing Zuko's past actions? Even if you argue in an oblique sense that Katara's parentification arose out of the war that Zuko's people waged, doesn't Zuko later taking on that responsibility and easing it off Katara have even MORE weight? Doesn't the part that Zuko played make it even more important that he takes on that burden?? Like, what even is the argument here?
Wait, why should I think kataangers have a point? The points being made in the screenshots were "momtara and dadko is bad because Zuko was once a villain" and "nuke all zutaras." Which of those points do you think is valid?
These people weren't harassing anyone, but one was implying that zutara shippers are immoral and the other was saying we should "shut it." That kind of behavior leads to harassment even if it's properly tagged. I screenshotted the posts to complain about them but did not include the usernames and did not engage with the actual posts because they were properly tagged.
As far as the antikataang tag, I tend to tag even if a post I make is slightly not positive to kataang, because the shippers are incredibly sensitive. It is a preemptive de-escalation move.
I don't think saying that we need to only make certain kinds of content to avoid being spoken about this way is a way to de-escalate things, it's letting fandom bullies dictate how we engage with the show. Notice that nobody on this thread was dragging kataang shippers for how they ship their ship or advocating for harassment, it was a discussion about how they talk about us.
I'm not fat, I'm poison resistant... I am also fat, but the poison dose is relative to body mass, and the first way of saying it is more pithy.
It has come to my attention that this is a rather alarming thing to say. I'm fine, I just thought it was funny and also true.
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you don’t like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lol
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and we’d really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ‘no’ and ‘OTP’ and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one person’s kink may be another person’s squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And That’s Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Don’t Like, Don’t Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A “live and let live” philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesn’t want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creator’s.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individual’s personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what they’re designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanlore’s relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!
DLDR has a modern offspring I’d like to nominate for honorary status on this list! “Dead Dove Do Not Eat” (or simply “Dead Dove”) is a tag that basically says “this is going to be awful, this is a hurtfest. Read at your own risk and don’t yell at me if you’re an idiot.”
DDDNE doesn’t replace DLDR, but I think it’s a very useful addition.

hi this drives me crazy
canon is what happens in the text. e.g. merlin tries to poison morgana
a headcanon is a fact that you have personally made up as an elaboration of canon. it is your invention. e.g. i think morgana and gwen had a teenage lesbian situationship before the events of canon. or, i think modern morgana would love evanesence.
an interpretation is how one reads the existing text. it is not an invented fact nor is it a headcanon, it is a reading. e.g. i think merlin tries to poison morgana out of misplaced self-hatred. or, i think that one line was delivered with suppressed malice and shows a nuanced relationship.
fanon is the general fandom’s accepted headcanons and interpretations that elaborate or recontextualize canon. e.g. merlin is a badass waif and morgana is a bitch.
these are all different words with different meanings.
and a cannon is a large mounted gun, usually on wheels, that uses explosives to fire projectiles.
“In Europe they–”
WHERE in Europe??!? WHERE??? You mean Iceland?? Azerbaijan? The Netherlands? Liechtenstein???? THERE ARE 50 COUNTRIES IN EUROPE. ALL WITH DIFFERENT CULTURES. SO PRAY TELL ME, WHERE IN FUCKING EUROPE.
in europe they got antisemitism
You know that whatever character did those problematic things isn't like. Real, right?
You are aware that a fictional character is just a rhetorical construct designed to fulfill a narrative/thematic purpose right? That their actions are written by an author who wants to use them to explore complex ideas and moral gray areas within the safe confines of fiction right? That they aren't a real person who has killed real people right?

I would actually have a lot of questions that would probably scare them off.
“Tell me about the bodies you saw! How many do you think you stepped over? Did you see any faces? What did you think of Rainbow Valley? What did the Death Zone feel like? Were you, like, constantly thinking about the fact that your body was actively dying the entire time you were in the aforementioned Death Zone?”
