â What the hell is a Slapjack? He mused inside his head with his eyebrow still arched due to the confusion he was having. He literally had no idea what the other male was talking about and the only thing he could do now was to just watch and try to comprehend what this kid is trying to do.âOh, no no! Iâll stick to easy card games for now. My brain might hurt if that happens.â He shook his hand before the male started to introduce himself out of the blue, the thought of giving his name to the other mustâve slipped in his mind. âAlexâ nice to meet you in thisâ âlovelyâ place, Yejun.â
The sarcasm was strong in this one. âItâsâŚitâs good to meet you too, Alex. Uh,â Yejun looked up from the cards long enough to take in Alexâs still-standing form, âcare to sit down? I know youâre impatient and all, but it might still be a while till weâre saved. Make yourself comfy, and Iâll explain the game.â He shimmied further against the wall of the small enclosed space to make room for his newâŚfriend?
âThese are your cardsââhe gestured to the small pile half a foot away from himââand these are mine,â he went on, gesturing to the pile right next to him. The game was self-explanatory really. âWhen you see the jack,â Yejun continued, dealing the rest of the cards out, âyou slap it. Thatâs literally all you gotta do.â
â âNo idea.â It was all that left the older maleâs lips as he carefully observes the younger looking male pulling out some cards. He wonât ask why he was bringing it in the first place and he sure doesnât want to know. But one thing Alex doesnât really have a clue on was basicallyâ playing cards. He doesnât even know how to play those children card games with the pairing instruction. Nope, it just wasnât his type. âHeck, I canât even play Solitaire and you expect me to play Blackjack?â
He studied the puzzled look on the manâs face. Huh. He looked like the type whoâd know even just a little bit about cards. Then again, appearances were just that: appearances. Hm. Maybe casino games were a tad much for a beginnerâYejun sure as hell took his time learning to perfect (or at least sharpen) his card strategies.
âI could teach you Slapjack instead? Itâs easy enough.â He wrapped his fingers in a practiced manner around the cut halves of the deck, shuffling them with ease. âUnless youâd rather skip to the harder games. Itâs your call, uhâŚâ Maybe now was a good time to ask his name, if they were on semi-friendly terms now. âSorry, it slipped my mind to ask until now: whatâs your name? Mineâs Yejun.â
â Maybe it was just him overreacting about things but he could already feel himself sweating all over his body as the temperature inside the closed room began to get even higher. He was debating with himself if he was destined to be this unlucky or it was just a mere coincidence. Both were still uncalled for and it was obvious that he wasnât enjoying it a single bit due to the evident frown showing on his face. Looking at the male with a confused expression, Alex only responded with a small groan before nodding at the maleâs idea since it was only the thing they could actually do inside. ââŚPlay cards?â He said in an uncertain tone, an arched eyebrow starting to form of his face.
Aha. Yejun couldnât help but let out a small chuckle. So he was interested now, was heâŚ
âYeah, know how?â Gingerly, he took out the pack of red cards weathered by time and use. He had found this deck somewhere back in his house in Guyana. One of his friends was an avid card game player who had been nice enough to let Yejun in on his tips and tricks of the trade. He still remembered spending lunch breaks, cards splayed in hands over sandwiches or whatever the caretaker had prepared for him that day. Yejunâs finger traced the outline of the designs on the back of the top card, somewhat lost in memory. Where was his friend now?
Past is past. He shook his hair out of his eyes, bringing himself back to the present. âWe could do Blackjack,â he continued. âOr Poker. I donât know that many Korean card games, sorry.â

Alex just rolled his eyes in annoyance. He really needed to get there as soon as possible but being âheld captiveâ, well not literally but he feels like one, by the elevator stopped him from reaching his destination. Maybe he was over-reacting at their current situation but how can the male be so happy about it. Their current place is dark, small, and not to mention itâs really hot inside. âEish.â
One thing he hated about hot places is that he somehow turns rude and aggressive . Dropping words as if he was being possessed or something. âWell, if this goes on for half an hour, Iâll kill myself in front of your eyes.â He muttered in a low voice before receiving a text from his friend who was asking him where was he and why was he taking so long. He was actually going to reply to him but the signal kept going on and off, causing his message to not go through the otherâs phone as he only received an error message after another. ââŚCrap!â
He shook his head infinitesimally in disbelief at the person trapped with him. How do people live like this guy? Okay, to be fair, maybe he had a really important engagement to attend, but what were you supposed to do in an elevator with no power? Apparently, this person chose to whine about it. Just Yejunâs luck. He didnât take too kindly to whiners. âCalm down. Weâll get out when we get out.â It was getting a bit stifling inside, though. Yejun slipped out of his plaid shirt so that he was left in his short-sleeved one, tying the first around his waist.
âLook, I know, we both have places we need to be,â he began, âbut believe me when I say all we can do is sit tight for a bit.â He could do that much, couldnât he? âTo take your mind off thingsââhere Yejun sat on the elevator floor cross-legged and rummaged through his backpack before triumphantly pulling out a semi-tattered cardboard boxââwe could play cards?â he suggested, his good-natured grin back on his face.
[...]
A grin also formed on his lips, and he bowed his head. âWell, thanks. I try. I mean, you know⌠With capturing this beauty and all.â Upon saying the word beauty, his smile grew wilder, almost ecstatic, and he spread his arms and spun slightly, excitement making him giggle rather loudly.
There was a certain aura around artists. Justâa certain something about the people who devoted a little (for some, maybe not so little) piece of their hearts and minds and bodies to making things, whatever âthingsâ entailed. You just knew. And they understood what it meant, giving yourself up to something you loved doing. Giving up those few extra hours of study time or, who knows, a scholarship at one of the SKY universitiesâŚor a lifetime of security in a job you despise. Talk to an artist about sacrifice.
Unless they proved to be an asshole of a person, Yejun almost always ended up becoming fast friends with other artists. They understood, and that was enough for him. This boy in front of him, he hoped, was not an exception.
He smiled like sunlight. Definitely no exception.
Yejun chuckled a bit at the burst of energy that followed his timid thanks. What a dork, he thought fondly. âThe word âbeautyâ does not cover half of this,â he replied, going over the wall again as if his eyes were trying to inhale the view. âI donât think.
âI hope Iâm not interrupting or something?â he asked, walking to one bright blue corner. âIâm just gonna be here plucking away at this old thingââhe gestured to the guitar case he was unslinging from his backââbut you did get here first. I could find another place if youâre claiming this one.â
Henry blinked in surprise at the younger maleâs enthusiasm, feeling a wide grin making its way on his lips at the same time. âYeah, I do,â he said, noticing how much this topic seemed to interest the other. That again excited him as well, because he just loved talking about music â hearing what kind of music others listen to, if they play any instrument, and all that. âWhy, do you like music?â That question was actually kind of stupid, because â didnât everyone like music? Whenever Henry asked people this question, they all reacted the same way and answered in the affirmative. But you never know.
"Hm ⌠Kind of, yeah," he then answered the boyâs question, shrugging a shoulder. "All those we looked at so far were a little over our budget. But weâll keep looking, of course!"
âDo I likeâ?â Words were fighting their way out of Yejunâs voicebox, tumbling over each other in their haste to leave his mouth. All his mouth did, though, was open and close gormlessly much like that of a goldfishâs. He never knew where to start when it came to music. He and the stranger would probably be on the bus another five days before he even got through half of what he could say about what music was to him. âThe short answer is yes,â he finally said with a laugh. âIâm not sure you have time to hear the long one.â
âOh, I see, I see,â he went, upon hearing the situation. âI know this sounds completely useless, but good luck. Somethingâs bound to come up soon.â He nodded fervently, wanting very much for his words to become reality.
Perhaps it was a loud noise or a cold breeze, but something made Jimin open his eyes. Feeling groggy he almost let them close again, but as he realised he had dozed off for longer than just a while, he was suddenly wide awake. He inhaled sharply and dug out his phone to check the time, and seeing that it was way past midnight, his exhale came out as a heavy sigh. Feeling annoyed he scrunched up his nose and quickly made a decision to get on the bus that had just arrived at the stop, since he had already missed the last subway and had now nowhere to go. He felt the sleepiness creeping on him, and he was too tired to concentrate on anything else than scolding himself for falling asleep.
So when he stepped up the stairs that lead inside the bus, his foot got stuck and he fell over. Gladly a stranger next to him was quick enough to save him from ending up on the floor, but one of the metal poles happened to be in a very unfortunate place - looking from his point of the view - and he hit his shoulder on it. He was still in a haze from having just woken up, annoyed by the fact that he missed his train, and just utterly not in his best shape, not mentally or physically. Which is why when the sudden wave of pain and shock both mixed together ran through his body, his eyes started to get filled with tears. He looked at the male who had prevented him from falling down completely; trying to hold back his tears he answered him, his voice trembling slightly âIâm fine.â
Now that the both of them had their feet firmly planted on the bus floor, Yejun managed to look at the passenger properly under the white fluorescent light. Jeez. The circles under his eyes were a perfect match to Yejunâs, if not a bit darker. His eyes were shining, and Yejun didnât miss the way his reply faltered ever so subtly. He so obviously was not fine at all. He was also swaying dangerously with the movement of the bus, which didnât look too safe. Yejun reached to grab one of the boyâs hands and placed it to grip the pole he himself was holding on to.
Yejun stuffed his own free hand inside the pocket of his hoodie. âYou donât seem too sure about that.â His brows pulled together. He was getting really worried about this guy. Being awake at two in the morning was crappy enough. Feeling like crap at two in the morning was just too much. Unsure whether to pursue the topic seeing as they were complete strangers, he settled for looking on at him warily. He could talk if he wanted to.
He felt like a tourist, honestly, having to search through websites and brochures on a city he had been living in for more than a year. Hailing from the province wasnât much help eitherâSeoul was just as confusing as the rest of the country. Yejun hadnât even visited his relatives in Incheon yet ever since he returned to South Korea. He couldnât help feeling a bit sad that he felt like a stranger in his own homeland, having been cheated out of so many years with it.
He went back to clicking through the page of Google entries. Anyway. He was desperate to leave the house; the four white walls of his room were beginning to stifle him. From the apartment to school to the hotelâeverything was becoming too routine. Yejun was usually thankful for any semblance of stability in his life, but this wasnât healthy for his muse. He hadnât written anything in a week.
Ihwa Art Village was what he read on his screen. It was the colors that made him stop scrolling; a neighborhood with dozens of murals covering its concrete walls. Street talent was the best of its kind. The village was all the way in Jongno on the opposite side of the river from Geumcheon, but Yejun figured it was worth the bus ride. In a matter of minutes, his guitar case was strapped to his back, notebook and pen safely tucked away inside its zippered pocket. Out the door he went, pausing only to grab a few more bills off his nightstand to get him through the day.
The village was just as impressive as the online pictures, if not more so. It was an outdoor museum, the art plastered on buildings instead of canvases. The roughness of it all made it all the more captivating. He could spend all day here.
After one or two alleyways, Yejun found himself in a small, out-of-the-way space behind one of the many brick buildings. The wall he faced was a bright, summer-y blue, dotted with orange birds flying across its azure expanse. It was always the simple things that drew Yejun in. The vibrance of the mural diverted his attention from the fact that he wasnât alone, but his eyes eventually travelled to the boy standing not very far from him, holding an expensive-looking camera up to his face. One of his eyes was scrunched up for the other to squint through the eyepiece. Yejun moved closer, his sneakers nearly soundless against the pavement. The concentration coming off of the boy was almost palpable; Yejun decided to wait until he heard the shutter click. He peered over the photographerâs shoulder, only managing to catch a glimpse of the picture, but Yejun could tell he had skill.
âI like your shot,â he said, grinning. The boy didnât look much older than him, and Yejun figured he could use some company.
