Ok so wth is this then
Straightestmike has died
Best day of all of our lives
Guy ok it is 100% not over. (Full disclosure: we also might just be losing it)
Ok, so this is about Will's infamous coming out scene. While I have a lot of issues with it, one thing that stuck out was how I felt like I was looking at Will from before he accepted himself - scared, unsure. I felt like he wouldn't do what he did. That's when I realised maybe it wasn't him.
Walk with me. I think that it was Vecna that got him to say what he said. For one, we know the only reason he came out was because Vecna gave him visions, and we also know that Vecna has remade that 'spy connection' thing. So, it doesn't seem completely insane to claim Vecna got him to say those things.
First of all there's the obvious - Mike is not Will's Tammy, and there's no way he got over his years of deeply being in love with him overnight.
But then there's something else more pressing. He says: "And we... And we like biking to Melvald's for malted milkshakes." Now, as well all know Melvald's is currently a general store and so would not be selling 'malted milkshakes'.
However, it used to be a diner.
And interestingly? It was a diner in the 50s. As in, when Henry was a kid, not the party.
And it turned into a general store sometime between then and 1973, because Joyce was working as a retail clerk at that point. How old was Will in 1973 (at the very very latest it could've still been a diner)? 2 years old. I hardly imagine a 2 year old is biking anywhere.
So, my point? By the time Will and the party were at the age where they would be biking to Melvald's, it wouldn't be the appropriate venue to get malted milkshakes. But when Henry was that age, it was. So, I really don't know if this is a huge reach or not, but maybe Vecna had some sort of influence over what Will was saying, and it wasn't his true thoughts.
Connecting this to Byler, maybe it wasn't Will calling Mike just a crush and his Tammy, but rather, it was Vecna's influence.
I was feeling bad for both us Bylers and Milkvans BC neither of us got anything good out of volume 2 and I wanted to see their reactions to know if they felt the same and
"Queerbaiting isn't a real thing, they're doing it to themselves"
Ok screw this 😊
Okay, for you all, I'm going to go back through and explain why every mike/Will scene in vol 2 leads to endgame, but that can start tomorrow.
For right now, I'm going to tackle the coming out scene and specifically Mike's reaction.
It starts off strong. No one really knows where Will's going w this, and he's talking about them all being friends, and playing d&d (Mike smiles) and it's sweet. Mike's warmed by Will. Obviously.
and then Will says the thing. "I don't like girls." And, while the rest of his friends are in the shot right after, Mike is the one we're obviously supposed to be looking at. He gets serious. Sits up straight.
It's the focus, bc Lucas and Dustin are almost stone still. But Mike is physically affected.
only After the line, when Will goes to elaborate, does it show Lucas and Dustin's reactions.
"I mean I do. Just... not like you guys." and ohhhh suddenly D+L understand. Suddenly they get it, and they sit up too.
And Then. Will makes direct eye contact and talks about his "crush". And Mike....
He perks up, just slightly- the tick of an eyebrow.
He glances down, quickly, and looks back up.
His face is twitching, unable to hold still.
Will then starts talking about the fear of losing loved ones- of drifting apart, and That being why he didn't come out: because he was scared.
And as he's saying this, we cut to Mike. Mike, who is no longer in a frame of three- him, Lucas, and Dustin. No, this is a close up, and he's almost completely alone in the frame, and he swallows. He's still; frozen.
After, it takes Three people hugging Will before Mike can join. Usually he'd be there, right after Jonathan, but he hesitates. He hesitates. He waits.
And he's the first to move to pull away from the hug.
Finally, this↑.
"I need to show him I'm not afraid anymore." And it cuts to Mike. Who nods, determined.
All of this points to Mike having something- a secret of his own. Something he's afraid of and that Vecna can use against him- something relating close enough to Will's speech that had him nodding along and seeming more affected and moved by his words by the second.
I think this scene was done perfectly. Coming out is scary, but a little less so when you've already had three people cheering you on (Joyce, Jon, Robin) and offering unwavering love/support about your queerness.
Because of this, and his bravery and strength, he now has this extra layer of protection when they face off against Vecna. He knows how his friends and family feel about him, and his secret. It can't be used against him ever again.
I mean, literally none of his queerness can. He literally just looked Mike in the eyes and told him he was his crush.
Mike, though, he's not safe.
He, before this day, wasn't even aware he knew other queer people. He's always felt completely and utterly alone in this, and we've seen how societal norms and pressure from others affect his life and decisions. He is afraid.
He is so, so scared.
But he just saw Will come out, and saw everyone's reactions (Except Nancy's... and the rest of his family's), and he's seeing that it can actually be brave and beautiful to accept yourself.
Will is now the one helping Mike to feel like not a mistake.
We still have the finale, and I think this scene alone built up to a lot.
Just because Will has all the answers about himself does Not mean he has all the answers regarding his love life (Mike's not Will's Tammy- and that line did Not mean what y'all interpreted it as, and that's okay).
Mike also now not only knows that Will is a safe person to talk to, but that Will Has (Had. He said "Had" and I'm wondering if that will come up at all) A Crush On Him. THE BOY HE LOVES HAS/HAD LOVED HIM BACK.
So, we still have the finale. We still have that monologue Finn teased, and the emotional acting Finn's supposed to deliver, and I know we're going to see it all.
He's, in these last seven episodes, been building up a lot of fear, and anger, and pain, and he doesn't have an outlet. And he just has his biggest insecurities/fears thrown at him by the love of his life in a very emotional, beautiful way. He's a ticking time bomb and that was the fuse.
So, get your butts out of the trenches of despair, rewatch volume 2, and pay attention to Mike.
Watch him put his hand on Will's arm, and watch how he talks to Jane, and see how we've gotten even less of his storyline than even volume 1, and understand that the epilogue will be big.
(I think we live in our heads a little bit, about Byler and this show. We love the plot and all the characters, but we have so many wants and expectations regarding Byler that we forget that this is a show with a giant cast and a giant plot, and that while Byler may be a center, endgame ship, they're not going to have all the screentime. They never have.
And s5 takes place in only a few days, so there's not really time to show the ships having moments- especially ships that aren't canon yet and are slowburn and it's supposed to be a surprise that Mike likes Will back *(bc it is. Will just admitted that he "knows" Mike's not like him. We're not supposed to know that he Is like him, actually.)*
So, while we want Byler to be the main plot and to have emotional moment after emotional moment, the reality is that this isn't Their show- it's the whole party's, there are other characters and stories we need to follow.
But we won't be let down on New Year's. I know we won't. And y'all should believe, too.)
I feel like after all that "boyfriends lie", "girlfriends spy" stuff in S3, having it come back to "friends don't lie" in S5 is making me certain that at the very least milk is bones.
Guys I still have hope. Hear me out:
Obviously the duffers had known will was gay for a long way coming and if this was about him accepting himself, they could've gone about it waay differently. They didn't need to include Mike as a love interest because apparently it's 'not about him' and he's 'just his Tammy' BC it doesn't add anything to the actual plot, meaning they could've just let will be independent and come to accept himself by himself or at least introduce another character earlier on. But they didn't. They made Mike his love interest and included enough evidence that Mike was gay to make a whole 300 + slide PowerPoint about it.
And also, don't forget that Finn said that Mike's obliviousness to Wills feelings would 'pay off later', which hasn't happened at all. You could argue that Mike now knows that will is in love with him from that coming out scene, but did that in any way 'pay off'? No. Meaning: Mike will still find out and it will be a big moment. They still have a whole 2 hours to do it.
There's also the fact that so many things don't add up. The "we're friends. We're friends", Mike's lies in the confession, STILL no Mike POV, Mike's unexplained character change in S3 and 4, and so much more.
One last thing. That coming out scene was handled quite poorly in my opinion if this is meant to be the end of that plot line. It wasn't an intimate moment, and there were random characters that barely knew will present there. Also, Vecna shouldn't have been included into that speech at all. All it did was make Wills coming out seem like it needed to happen to progress the plot, not his character.
So, sorry for the rant but guys, please don't give up. It's not over until those final credits play 💙💛. I refuse to believe the duffers and Shaun levy of all people would solve every single other romance/friendship plot so well but then drop the ball so so hard with this.
We must become the new Merlin fandom (we can never die) please promise me guys I don't want this to ever end 🙏 🥺
IT'S A SIGN
I just went over to visit the Stranger Things subreddit (dangerous, I know) and I keep seeing stuff about how Byler is offensive (???) and how apparently us Bylers think everything is homophobic. Like we almost NEVER go out of our way to randomly bring up our issues with the GA and Milkvans to their face, we NEVER hate on their subreddits and posts, and yet they are still soo interested in bringing us down. Now it's to the point where I don't just want Byler for the positive messaging and beautiful slowburn, I want it so that these people finally admit they were wrong for throwing insults at us and making us feel awful for no reason.
But the stupid thing is, no matter if we are right or wrong, they're still going to try to make us miserable. So, my advice (other than obviously don't visit the subreddit) is just don't engage at all. Keep this community positive and keep doing what we've been doing for so long. We can keep ignoring the hate from the toxic side of the fandom, because this show isn't for them. It's for the outcasts and the people like us. Don't let them ruin it.
We're literally so close, let's not get negative now 💙💛
OK so this is kinda getting kinda ridiculous does anyone actually know why this is happening 😭
(for reference when I searched 'Mike Wheeler' it came up with the more generic results)
Why the hell does it come up with those three specifically and nothing else I'm so confused
The ghost of Shawn Levy must've possessed a Netflix intern it's the only explanation
This guy is actively PULLING AWAY when she puts her hand on his. Like bro is acting awkward as hell and is probably running off to go find Will 😔
I feel like it's insane that even before Robin's shared looks speech, us Bylers (and for that matter the GA) have been picking up on the fact that Mike and Will are like constantly glancing at each other (as in "sharing looks").
And I also think that the shared looks with each other were gradually increasing over the seasons (as in the snowball gaining speed and momentum so that it can finally become that avalanche in vol 2 or the last episode).
Brush of the knee, shared looks. It's all there, you just have to be open to seeing it.
This is a guilty/awkward look and no one can change my mind. Milkvan is 100% bones.
The look of love 😍
Damn look at how uncomfortable he is
Robin, Mike and Will combo will save me.
