Rockfall (noun) – a mass of fallen rocks

With many cliffs, layers of unstable volcanic rock, and debris flows, there is plenty of rocky material moving around Mount Rainier. This rockfall plays a powerful role in shaping Mount Rainier’s glaciers. A layer of rockfall can actually insulate a glacier from melting, as was the case in 1963 when a rockfall from Little Tahoma Peak covered the lower Emmons Glacier with debris. As a result of decreased melting, the glacier advanced rapidly in the mid-1960s. This photo shows a large rockfall on the Winthrop Glacier in 1989. As glaciers melt, this abundant rockfall, along with rocky debris pulled up by the glaciers’ movement, is left behind in piles of rubble called terminal and lateral moraines and goes on to fill riverbeds.
