3 days ago I cycled 50km along the canal from Mechelen to Leuven capital of Flemish-Brabant and home to the brewery of Stella Artois-InBev. Land rights is a very difficult issue in South Africa, here we see allotments prepared for new inhabitants at the Palm Ridge township, about 1 hour taxi drive from Johannesburg. The term township usually refers to areas, that from the beggining of the 19th century and up until the end of apartheid, were segregated for non -whites. An old picture from when I covered the Canapisa march earlier this year. The political movement began in 1922 when Francesc Macià founded Estat Català (Catalan State). In 1931, Estat Català and other parties formed Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (Republican Left of Catalonia; ERC), which won a dramatic victory in the municipal elections of that year. Macià proclaimed a Catalan Republic, but after negotiations with the leaders of the new Spanish Republic, he instead accepted autonomy within the Spanish state. In the Spanish Civil War, General Francisco Franco abolished Catalan autonomy in 1938. In 2006 a statute of independence was passed through a referendum, however it's articles were challanged in the Spanish High Court of Justice and declared unconstitutional. This caused protests in over 550 municipalities, who held proxi referendums for independence. The protests continued causing a change of government in 2013. Despite the Spanish court also banning the non-binding vote, the Catalan self-determination referendum went ahead on 9 November 2014. The result was an 81% vote for "yes-yes", but the turnout was only 42%. In 2015 the new president Carles Puigdemont announced a binding referendum on independence, to be held in September 2017. About a month ago I travelled north on the Italian penisula towards Trieste, my final destination was to be Croatia but I never made it. Instead I made a new friend, Alessandro DeMarco, who was staying at a local naturalist and hosted me for a few days. We embarked on a travel into the Dolomite mountains in search of a famous but underground gathering, the european rainbow gathering. Neither he nor I were ready for what awaited us. I shot this picture as we climbed up the mountain on the second day, we had stopped for a break and a cup of tea at the second rest station. This gentleman caught my eye as I saw him following the cohort of the pro legalization for marijuana march in Pisa aka "CanaPisa" which happened on Saturday 20th of May, spreading all the way from the station crossing the Arno river and ending close to the Don Bosco Prison.
