You know, Marcille from Dungeon Meshi reminds me a lot of Sanzang (and they're both my favs from their respective medias so I guess I have a type?)

Do you ever think, looking at the concept art for Hero is Back, about how we might have had a jttw with the pilgrim’s fully realised height and demonicness? Third bro Sha Wujing as the towering once-god he was described to be. The Second bro Zhu Bajie that really needed to eat the portions of thirty human people in order to be mildly full. The uncanny valley White Dragon Horse, who may look like a horse but that thing is clearly not a horse. Sun Wukong who is really a monkey that walks on two legs and talks. In the stories people used look at the pilgrims and - run. Just run, screaming, for fear of been killed by demons. And those demons did kill. Just not them, because that was unbuddhist and Tang Monk said so.

Do you guys think Tripitaka just casually drops insane dad lore onto his disciples, like

Sanzang: *explaining why he doesn't like rivers* So my dad was murdered and his corpse was thrown into a river. And then my mom tried to drown herself, but didn't, and instead went with the bandit who murdered my dad. And then, after I was born, my mom put me on a piece of driftwood with a note attached that was written in her own blood and let me float out onto the river. And then later, around when I first became a monk, me, my mom, and my grandfather cut out the bandit's heart and liver while he was still alive and sacrificed them to the river. And then after the fact, my mom tried to drown herself again and I had to stop her, and then my dad's corpse floated by and just, got up? He was saved by a river dragon or something. All of this happened in the same river mind you. And now I have to deal with all these river demons. So, yeah, that's why I don't really like rivers.

His disciples:

Bajie: did you just say you cut out someone's heart and liver while they were still alive

Sanzang: uhhhh, ummmmm, oh hey look, a ferry, let's go ask if we can have a ride hahahahahaha
