I think possibly the most heartbreaking whump trope is when character A is dead and character B is so distraught and in denial they literally have to be pulled away from A’s dead body.

even more random dialogue
“Wait, can...c-can you stay? Just...for a while? At least until I fall asleep.”
“Hey, are you sure you’re feeling okay?”
“You’re feeling pretty warm. I’m gonna get a themometer to check your temperature.” “What? No! No, no, I’m fine! I promise!”
“Listen, I know it hurts, but you’ve gotta let me take care of you or else it’s gonna get even worse.”
“Are you feeling any better today?” “...Not really.”
“No, listen, you have to stay awake, okay? Can you do that for me? You can’t fall asleep now.”
“No, please, it’s so cold...” “I know, honey, I’m sorry. We’ve gotta get your fever down, though, or it’s gonna get even worse.”
“I don’t wanna get you sick, though...” “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ve already been exposed anyway, and you need someone to take care of you.”
Whump Prompt #75
“You’re not a hero! You’re a pile of scrap metal that some bleeding heart idiot wired together for a handful of money! You don’t have a mind or emotions, you have programming. Your kind doesn’t understand or deserve things like emotions or compassion. Everything special about you comes from a series of ones and zeros that are easily removed.”
I don’t know if anybody else is a nerd but the trekkie in me just immediately went "oh my gosh imagine if someone said this to Data.”
character A finds it unusual that character B isn’t in the mood for their favorite dinner. playfully, A reaches over, feels B’s forehead, and asks through a laugh: “are you feeling okay?”
heat meets A’s palm, proving that, no, B isn’t feeling okay at all
Some things I think are super cute.
Sickies that have a stuffed toy or security blanket they need when ill.
Sickies that grab everything soft and make a nest.
Sickies that are upbeat even when they don’t feel good.
Sickies that only want soup for the duration of an illness, especially if it’s only soup made by one specific person.
Sickies that just curl up wherever and nap. In the car. On the living room floor. In a hammock on the back porch. The waiting room of a doctor. A booth. Just anywhere.
“I- I don’t know what to do.” Caretaker’s voice breaks as they watch Whumpee sleep. Whumpee tried so hard to hide it, but their pain is only getting worse. In sleep they can’t wipe away the tears that trickle down their cheeks, or the high-pitched whimpers that escape when the blanket rubs up against their injury.
Caretaker buries their head in their hands. “I don’t know how to help you,” they whisper. “I don’t even know what I’m doing.”
Whumpee that’s not 100% human so their temputure naturally runs a lot higher than normal people. Then when they get a fever and someone takes their temperature they’re like “WHAT THE HELL HOW ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?!” because it’s some absurd number like 126 (40-50 something for celcius)
When the whumpee who never admits anything is wrong and always insists they’re fine wakes caretaker up in the middle of the night in tears to ask for help, you know something’s really wrong.
Is anyone else more about accidental whump than having a whumper? Like falling down a well or getting fallen on by a horse or an infected animal bite? Like, torture seems to dominate the whump scene, sometimes it's nobody's fault. And that's just the worst thing in the world sometimes.
Person A falls off a small cliff into the ocean, has to swim, hypothermic and with a broken arm, to an outcrop of rock, and person B is wondering where they are, they should be home by now.
Or there's an unexpected snow storm. Person A goes out to reinforce the cabin roof and falls off their ladder, knocking themself out cold. Person B freezes half to death looking for them in the dark.
Or young person A gets pulled into the river and their family race to get them out.
I'm all about nonviolent, human error based whump, it's just so wholesome to see a community help each other out against the cruelty of nature rather than man
See - see - this is the stuff I like
This is the stuff that - if I were Gordon Ramsey - I would openly be weeping “finally, some good fucking food”
All of my whump stories that I’m writing are accidental occasions. Right now I’m writing an occasion in which the character gets mauled by a heckin’ lion. One of my favorite stories that I’ve written but never published was about a character that got blasted from a dragon that spits acid. Your whumpers don’t always have to be humans/sentient!! Your whumpers could be the elements: snow, mudslides, avalanches, earthquakes, volcanoes erupting, tornadoes, dust/sand storms, falling through ice, and of course that beautiful, good ol’ fashioned thunderstorm.
“I’m cold.” “Well, I don’t control the- wait, you’re cold? It’s like 80 degrees in here!”
Just Trying To Find Others
Like/reblog this post if you’re a minor-friendly whump/sickfic blog!
Come on, anyone?
Anyone???
yes absolutely! i’m a legal adult myself but I’m totally fine with younger people visiting and following my blog if they’re comfortable with it. There’s certainly nothing NSFW here, just the stuff you’d typically expect from a whump blog.
“I’m really hot.” “Somehow even with snot running down your face, I agree.” “No, not like that!”
boy so miserable and exhausted and ill and near delirious with fever he starts to beg the caretaker to make him feel better. crying and breath hitching,"p-please, please, please I don't feel good." he doesn't even know what he wants apart from not to feel so terrible, so he's broken down to the point of just begging whoever will listen, hoping they can do something about it. but is the caretaker super worried and holds boy tighter and tries to reassure him he's trying his best, or is the caretaker not a caretaker at all and ignoring boy's pleas? or is it a little of both? caretaker rescues boy who still thinks he needs to plead and beg to get a blanket?
Gentle forehead kisses to check whumpee’s temperature
“Hey...I know you’re busy, but...when you can, can you please come get me?”
some more random dialogue
“How is everyone doing?” “Well, A is so delirious they won’t shut up about how much they want a jetpack, and B drank almost an entire bottle of cough syrup and has thrown up at least six times already. So no, we’re not doing too hot.”
“Don’t you think we should call B?” “No, they’re not supposed to be back home until next week. I’ll be fine.”
“I’m not going anywhere, okay?”
“Obviously the meds haven’t kicked in yet, because I did not understand a single thing you just said. Go back to bed.”
“That’s...that’s my sleeve, but sure, go ahead, it’s not like the tissues are literally right there on the nightstand...”
“Do you need me to carry you?” “...maybe?”
“That’s, uh...that’s a lot a blood...” “Don’t you dare pass out. I can’t give myself stitches.”
You know what’s one of my favorite specific fever sicknarios?
When someone is so fever ridden and out of it that they can’t articulate their thoughts and end up saying something completely random. Like the caretaker(s) put them in a cold bath to get their fever down and they’re trying to question why they’re doing it but it ends up coming out like this:
*in their head*: Why am I in a bathtub? Why is it so cold? I don’t like cold. I wanna be warm. Maybe some tea might help. Yeah, tea with lots of honey because my throat kinda hurts. I like honey. Bees are so talented for making honey. Bees are awesome.
*outloud with a really weak voice after being quiet for a while*: Bees are awesome.
And the caretaker(s) could either be super concerned and try to cool them down faster or be sympathetic and agree with them, “Yes, bees are awesome.” Or maybe both!
I love this omg
As much as I love sick characters who are miserable and clingy and emotional, sick characters that are delirious and ridiculous might actually be my favorites.
And when the caretaker plays along and pretends like they’re having a normal conversation it’s just asdfghjkl
