Bespoke vs Made to Measure

Sorry i've been gone a while! School totally got in the way of a couple of posts.

Anyway, Bespoke and Made to Measure usually get confused. The former is usually analogous to the term "Couture" because in reality, they are the same. Bespoke stems from the UK while Couture stems from France and both mean garments are made almost completely by hand. This includes the pattern, cutting and sewing.

These garments are true to the client's body, however unique that may be. Attention to detail can be seen in the photo above on a fully canvased lapel and chest. Surgeon's cuffs can be found on Bespoke suits where the buttons on the cuff actually work. Maybe even extra pockets can be added to the suit as well.These suits usually range from $4000-20,000. Savile row is famous for this.

Made to measure on the other hand is slightly different in that there is a pre-made general pattern. This pattern is altered after a client's measurements are taken. It wont be a perfect fit but it will be close. Think of it as altering a suit before the suit is even made. Also, interfacings used would vary as these suits may be half canvased or fused. With these suits, there wont be as much customization as bespoke as these suits follow a set pattern. The turn around time is also quicker in terms of production.

You can find made to measure in boutiques such as Ermenegildo Zegna and Brooks Brothers and some department stores such as Saks 5th. Prices can range from $1200 and up.

Both are great choices and really, depends on preference.

Men's Dress Shoe Guide...Never Leave Home Without Knowing It

Since Calculus 2 is not taking up my time tonight, here is a little guide that will save your ass and your style to that now perfect outfit. Never make a shoe mistake again.

Some notes:

Whats in right now. 

Shoes: Saddle, any captoe and tip. Wear them black for formal occaisions and wear them brown with dark jeans, gray pants or tan.

Boots: Chukka and Chelsea boot. Wear them to wear them. You can even find them in suede, varnished leather or canvas

Loafers: * Monkstrap. Featured in GQ style guide this year under shoes. Make a statement. Wear monks

Leathers: Preference

Soles: Rubber for casual and Leather for formal. *If going with leather, make sure to have some taps installed by a cobbler. Gives the shoe extra life. The click noise people will hear when you walk is the sound of, "He knows what the hell he is doing."

Hunting for Women: Houndstooth

The Houndstooth pattern is traditionally found on men's garments in Britain. Usually spotted on hunting jackets, this pattern is now spotted on everything from coats to accessories for women. It's a great pattern and cuts a mean figure.

Steampunk....Where Fashion Is Headed

Lately, the genre of steampunk has caught my attention....

So what is Steampunk? Simply, if you ever saw that Will Smith movie, "Wild Wild West" you get the idea. 

Why is steampunk cool? Because they don't give a shit, look cool and aren't even trying in the process. It's a lifestyle.

I love this style because it combines elements of couture and street. What a combination. Here are some examples

Why this outfit works:

This is a work outfit. You want to be comfortable but still stylish. How? The down vest should be slim cut and in a bright autumn color to compliment with all that tan action. It will also keep one warm but not add too much bulk.

Slim cut trousers subdue the wildness of the down vest with clean lines and a complimenting color. Wearing a boot as opposed to a heel is more functional, comfortable and meshes well with the idea of a work outfit.

The shirt makes the outfit. It's tailored, trim and patterned with pin dot to contrast with all the bold color, adding a little style but not taking away from the outfit. Tailored shirts also showcase shape to a body...what needs to be shown once that vest is taken off.

Is this sexy? Probably not. What it is, is comfortable, functional and well put together. Give it a try and see for yourself

Why this outfit works: 

You can go all black if you are at some event or on a night out. If standing out is your thing, contrast colors. Try a black blouse with red flares and black wedges or any color to contrast with one article of clothing.

I love wedges with flares because of the compliment it creates: you aren't trying too hard. With pointy high heels you look too much like a bitch and flats will look too baggy. Wedges are right in the middle...perfect. Flares give a nice elegant drape and form when walking. 

Wear this with confidence and I guarantee you will be the most fashionable one there.
