━━ a/n: so after a month of pondering, i finally decided to separate this into two parts ― bcs it's so long it's probably gonna reach more than 30k words. also, part of the reason that this got delayed a month was writers block and (mostly) haikyuu. i am very sorry. truly sorry. anyways, i hope you enjoy the story! part two will (hopefully) be done by the next month!
inspired by hyena by my first story.
you’ve gone through almost 90% of your wardrobe. the charity ball is tomorrow, yet you still have nothing to wear.
your best friends, seokmin and seungkwan, came to your house in order to help you with your outfit, but it’s been two and a half hours and the three you have nothing. they were on your bed - seokmin leaning on a pillow, whilst seungkwan was on his stomach, peering closely at the dresses you were choosing.
“what do you think of this one?” you turned around, a strapless black dress on your hand as you eyed your friends’ reactions. this was the last of all the dresses that you have, and you pray that at least one of them is going to say it’s okay. seokmin’s eyes widened and actually looked like he was appreciating the dress, but seungkwan squinted his eyes and shook his head.
you groaned as you put your dress back in your wardrobe. almost twenty dresses yet you couldn’t find the right one for the next charity ball your company was hosting.
“look, y/n,” seungkwan spoke up, “it’s a charity ball. if you’re going to wear the same dress like every other girl, you’re not going to stand out!”
“i don’t even want to stand out, seungkwan,” you said, raising your hands up in defeat. “there’s no one in particular that i want to impress, so why would i want stand out?”
“well,” said seokmin, as-a-matter-of-factly, “you sure? because lee junghyun definitely has the hots for you.” you glared at him.
“anyone can see that,” seungkwan rolled his eyes. “he’s not even trying to hide it. and if anything, he’s the one who has to impress y/n.”
“well,” you said, dropping down on your bed, squeezing in between the two of them. “i don’t even know why i’m invited to this charity ball. it’s not like i’m the owner of the company or anything.” seungkwan scoffed at your words.
“are you serious? it’s obviously not because you’re mr. lee’s favorite employee or because lee junghyun has a crush on you.” you slapped seungkwan’s arm, causing him to hiss in pain, rubbing the spot you slapped to ease the pain.
“or maybe, it’s because everyone in her company is literally invited to the charity ball, and there’s no way she won’t be invited to it,” said seokmin, rolling to his side before getting off the bed, “you’re already invited, and that’s that. you can’t back out from it, bub.” he was now standing on the floor, rubbing the wrinkles off of his shirt. “if you’ve got nothing else on your wardrobe, why don’t we go shopping then? and then we can have dinner outside too.”
“that sounds like a good idea,” you said, pushing yourself up before facing seungkwan. “what are you going to do? are you going to stay here and sulk all day?” seungkwan glared at you before rolling out of your bed, landing on his feet on the ground with a thump.
“of course i’m coming with you. seokmin hyung’s not going to be able to pick a good dress for you.”
“hey!” seokmin cried, but the two of you only laughed at him before heading out of the room.
in the next two hours, the three of you have been going in and out of shops, but nothing was good enough for the three of you. either they were too plain or too scandalous. you were getting sick of looking at the colors, the designs, the special details that the staff had shown you but you cared nothing for it ー mostly because you're honestly sick of looking at dresses right now.
“why don’t we split up from here?” suggested seungkwan. “if any of us finds something good enough, we should take a picture and send it to our group chat.”
that seemed like the least time consuming idea, so both you and seokmin decided to follow seungkwan’s plan.
seungkwan and seokmin went to the other side of the street, so you were left alone, almost losing all hope for a good dress. even if you couldn’t find a dress, it’s fine, you thought. you won’t lose anything from not going tomorrow either, right?
as soon as you thought about that, something caught your eye. you turned towards the left side, and that’s when you stumbled upon the most perfect dress on the display. you gasped.
it was a navy colored sheath dress with an off shoulder neckline, the sleeves stopping right around the wrist of the mannequin. there were hints of gold glitter all over it, and it didn’t seem too simple nor too extravagant, nor did it look too plain or too scandalous. you felt like it fit you just right.
“you should try it.” you jumped in surprise as an unknown voice spoke from behind you. you turned around to see who spoke to you, and there, stood a man who you’ve never seen. his blonde hair reached the back of his nape, curling slightly at the end, and he was wearing a black tux over his beige colored turtleneck. he was grinning at you - it seemed innocent, but you know way better than that. something about this guy seemed off.
you raised an eyebrow at him. “who are you?”
he offered a hand to shake, but you only eyed him suspiciously. seeing as you had no intention to shake his hand, he only shrugged and held his hand down. “yoon jeonghan, at your service. it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“i can’t say the same to you, though.” he let out a laugh.
“feisty.” you scrunched your nose at his comment. “but, in all honesty, you should try that dress.”
you felt your own willpower wavering. you didn’t want to follow this suspicious man’s words, but on the other hand, you might not stumble upon a better dress than this. you were in the middle of contemplating before you felt a tug on your hand.
“hey!” you cried as you found yourself being softly dragged into the store by the stranger (whose name is apparently jeonghan).
“princess, i’m a frequent around here, and i can tell you with confidence that that dress will be sold out in the next fifteen minutes if you don’t go and try it on now.” he said, his tone didn’t sound as playful as he did a few minutes ago.
as strange as it was, you found yourself oddly agreeing with him, a stranger you've met less than ten minutes ago. as much as you didn’t want to listen to him, you have been looking for a dress for almost five hours now. you saw the perfect dress, and you didn’t want to let go of the chance.
you saw him grinning in victory when you sighed in defeat as the staff approached the two of you. before you could open your mouth, he had beaten you to it.
“she wants to try the dress on display.” he said, with an air of elegance to him. you looked at him in surprise. sure he looked classy, but you didn't think he could sound… high-class? you couldn't quite pinpoint the correct word for it. you didn't know what to expect from him, yet he sounded like he was more than what you expected. you squinted your eyes, not sure what to make of your observations, but you were almost sure of one thing.
you were 60% sure he sounded rather fake.
jeonghan stood there, waiting for you to change into the dress.
as you entered the changing room, jeonghan let out a deep sigh. this is just another job of his, he thought to himself.
you sure didn't seem like the other girls he's met around here. most of them would have giggled at his face, bat their eyelashes at him, buy him stuff he wanted, and, by the end of the day, he would be in their beds, letting them feel pleasure before leaving them without a word. thats how he would know they were just spoiled rich brats, not really giving a fuck about money in any way.
sure, he's also met with some people who were like you at first, suspicious and unconvinced. but it usually took him around ten minutes for them to fall for his charms. so he was genuinely surprised when you haven't let your guard down even in the first ten minutes, let alone batting your eyelashes at him. he inwardly chuckled. he liked challenges, and you were giving him one.
he was in the middle of planning how to get you for the night when you came out of the dressing room, and he almost choked on his own spit at how you looked.
the navy dress hugged your figure perfectly, as if it was made for you. the off shoulder neckline perfectly showcasing your milky shoulder, and the way your hair fell made you look… he couldn't find the right words to describe how you look, and how he felt. it was at this moment that he realized you were going to be a tough journey.
the staff was quick to praise you in the dress, and you smiled politely at the staff, before turning to face him. you shuffled in uncertainty, and jeonghan realized he must've been staring at you. he cleared his throat before smiling his money-making smile.
“that dress suits you perfectly.” you bit your lip, and jeonghan found that he liked the sight. most girls who tried to seduce him would bite their lip, and rather than finding them sexy, jeonghan only found them funny. he had never said that to their faces though.
“can you,” you mumbled, “take a picture of me?” jeonghan let out a small laugh as you frowned back at him. god, he's never found any of the girls he picked up around here cute, but you were cute in all your sassiness.
“sure, princess.” your frown deepened as you handed jeonghan your phone. he took a snap of you, checking the pictures before returning your phone to you.
jeonghan stared at you fumbling with your phone - looks like you were sending the picture to someone. jeonghan hoped it wasnt to a boyfriend. he wondered why though. the girls he had seduced usually didn’t care if they had a boyfriend or not - they’d willingly give themselves to him.
maybe it’s because of you reluctance to talk to him? he didn’t know.
jeonghan saw you return to the dressing room to, what jeonghan assumed, change back to your regular clothes. as soon as you were out of his sight, jeonghan started planning.
you were buying a dress, so there’s definitely something important going on. a friend’s wedding? a charity event? a company gala? he was going to have to ask you later - and definitely ask to be your plus one.
jeonghan didn’t know how long he was zoning out for, but he snapped back to reality as he saw you came out from the changing room from the corner of his eye. he took out his phone in a rush, scrolling through his messages and social media, but his mind was preoccupied somewhere else. jeonghan saw from the corner of his eye as the staff approached you and you nodded, smiling as you said to them that you'll take the dress. he pocketed his phone before approaching you, flashing his flirty smile.
“you looked gorgeous in that dress.” the smile that you showed to the staff earlier disappeared, being replaced with a frown instead.
“why are you still here again?” you raised an eyebrow at him. jeonghan stared down at you. okay. he knew you weren’t an easy target, but he didn’t know you would be this hard to get.
“calm down, princess.” he chuckled, trying to keep his cool. “it wouldn’t be polite to leave a girl alone, you know.”
“i’m perfectly fine being alone,” you said, clucking your tongue. “besides, i came here with my friends. they’ll be here soon.”
jeonghan raised an eyebrow at you. “and where exactly are they now?” you bit your lower lip. jeonghan smirked to himself. you must be bluffing.
“whatever,” you said, turning your back to him as you strutted off to the cashier to pay. jeonghan hummed in satisfaction, and went back to scrolling through his phone in peace. but his peaceful moment was interrupted when two guys frantically rushed into the shop, looking awry and disheveled, besides for the fact that they were looking quite handsome. jeonghan made eye contact with one of them, but they ignored him and quickly ran for you.
“girl1, tell me you bought it! tell me you bought it!” the shorter one of them held your shoulders and shook you. jeonghan stepped forward, ready to stop them, but you just nodded at them, grinning widely as you showed them the shopping bag the staff had handed you a few seconds earlier..
jeonghan stopped in his tracks. now, you do seem different when you smile. it made him want you for the night even more.
“yes, boo, i bought it. now will you stop shaking my shoulders?” the guy squealed. the other guy (looks like a horse, jeonghan thought) grinned at her with a thumb up.
“we couldn’t find anything but then you sent us the text and we were like,” the horse guy stopped mid sentence to jump up and down, apparently unable to describe his feelings with words. jeonghan stared at them. he didn’t think you would be friends with these two noisy guys, but yet you were.
jeonghan cleared his throat, causing the three of you to stop your festivities and look at him. you rolled your eyes at him the short guy eyed him up and down, whilst horse guy just looked at him with confused eyes.
“i forgot you’re still here.” you said at him. jeonghan placed his palm on his chest, faking a heartache.
“well, you didn’t need to say that out loud, princess.”
“who’s this?” short guy asked, eyes squinting at him. you waved your hand at seungkwan. “no one important. don’t mind him.”
“well,” jeonghan spoke up, “if it weren’t for me, you probably wouldn’t have bought that dress, would you?” jeonghan saw you squeeze your eyes shut, as if wanting him to just shut up already. but he knew he was right. and he also knew you knew he was right.
“kwan, seokmin, this is jeonghan. i don’t know his last name and probably won’t ever know it.” jeonghan smiled his perfect smile, bowing down to greet the two. horse guy, aka seokmin, smiled back at him, but shorter guy was like you - he looked at jeonghan with cautiousness.
“as a matter of fact, princess,” jeonghan said, “i did state my last name earlier. yoon jeonghan, at your service.” short guy tried to keep his straight face, but the way his lips were facing upwards and how his eyebrows were raised looked like he was super amused. horse guy, however, wasn't even bothering to hide it. his jaw dropped, and he looked at you with large eyes. you groaned at their reactions and slapped their backs, to which jeonghan smirked in response.
“if you can introduce yourself, why do you need me to do it for you?” you rolled your eyes at him. jeonghan felt himself getting impatient - god, he just wanted to sleep with you, but why were you making it hard for him? and with your two friends there, jeonghan knew his chances today were blown away.
“well,” short guy (seungkwan, was it?) spoke up, moving towards the door. “it’s late now, and princess here needs to get her beauty sleep for tomorrow. so we’ll be going now.”
jeonghan raised an eyebrow. so there was something important happening tomorrow. but before he could open his mouth to ask, the three of you had headed out whilst bickering with each other. jeonghan smiled to himself before heading out of the shop himself.
it was when he met moonsik later that evening that he realized he never found out what your name was.
“girl, you look fucking stunning,” seungkwan had said when he and seokmin appeared at your house to help you prepare for the gala the next day.
you did feel great about yourself. you had tied your hair into a bun and worn a necklace with a moon pendant. you took out your crystal earrings - they weren’t swarovski, but to you they were more than enough. inside the dress, you also put on your five inch stilettos, giving you a height boost. you had your beloved gold purse, some cash money, a credit card, and your phone inside the purse.
“if you weren’t my best friend i will probably ask for your number,” seokmin said, and you playfully slapped him on the arm. he yelped, before shaking his head, mumbling, “never mind.”
“are none of you willing to be my plus one?” you faked a pout, but seungkwan only shuddered, while seokmin shook his head violently.
“junghyun will kill us if he sees one of us with you.” seungkwan stated.
“oh come on! he wouldn't dare to!” but the two of them were insistent on not going, and you gave up on bringing a plus one.
“so, how are you going to the ball?” seungkwan asked.
“by car? duh?” you said, and seungkwan groaned in frustration.
“in that dress? no chance,” seungkwan grabbed your car keys. “seokmin and i are gonna drive you there, but find your own ride home.” before you could protest, the two of them had already dragged you towards your car., with seokmin taking the driver’s seat.
when you arrived, as soon as you got off the car, without saying anything to you, the two of them sped off somewhere with your car. you grit your teeth, swearing to curse them later. you walked towards the entrance, showing your invitation to the usher before going inside the ballroom, bracing yourself for whatever was going to happen later. not long after, a familiar voice spoke up - a voice you very much wanted to avoid.
“wow, y/n,” you turned your head towards the speaker, who turned out to be none other than lee junghyun. “you look stunning tonight.” and he looked so damn whipped, you actually felt sorry for him. sorry because no matter how much you want to deny the rumor that’s been going around, you also knew that his feelings for you was very obvious. but no matter how hard you try, you couldn’t return the same feelings back.
you faked a smile at him, and he seemed to fall for it. he offered an arm to you, and, having no other choice, you took it. the other people around you were staring at you - you tried to ignore it, but you knew what they were whispering about you. that the two of you were sleeping together, that you were sucking him up so you can get a higher position, yada yada yada. you took a deep breath and let it out slowly, trying not to think about it too much. at least there’s someone you can talk to here, even if you didn’t desire his company as much.
“you don’t look so bad yourself,” you said (out of formalities), walking alongside junghyun, greeting some of the most important people as you walked, for junghyun was the son of the ceo, after all. when it was just the two of you, he kept talking about work and about the gossip around work, and if it wasn’t any of those, he would talk about his own life (which you honestly have no interest in). you realized right there and then that you just couldn’t be with the guy, couldn’t bear to listen to him bragging about his achievements and not even trying to get to know the slightest bit about you.
then again, every time junghyun offered to talk to you or anything, you pretended you were busy, or had other plans, so you never really knew what kind of person he was. until today, of course.
he was excitedly talking to you about his golf clubs and how he personally went to the states to buy a high quality one when your eyes caught the sight of a familiar blonde hair. you whipped your head towards the direction of the hair, but it was gone as fast as you saw it. you shook your head - now you must be imagining things. there was no way he could enter the gala - he had to have an invitation.
“y/n, are you okay?” you turned to see junghyun looking at you in concern. you smiled and slightly shook your head at him.
“don’t worry, it was nothing. now, where were we?” you smiled - part of you knew that smile was fake, but you’ve got to admit you’re only walking with him because he’s the son of your boss, and you didn’t want to let your boss down, especially since he’s helped you so much.
“you haven’t sat down ever since you arrived, haven’t you?” junghyun said, and you were honestly surprised he noticed. then again, as soon as you arrived here, he had dragged you around. this time though, he dragged you to the nearest table for two. you sat down one one side as he excused himself to go grab drinks for the two of you.
you were just gazing at the people around aimlessly when a very familiar voice spoke up next to you.
“i was right, wasn’t it? you look stunning in that dress, princess.”
your eyes widened. so your eyes haven't been playing tricks at you.
“yoon jeonghan?” said man grinned his pearly white teeth at you, while you were sure you were just staring at him, dumbfounded. he was wearing a beige colored suit, matching with his beige pants. his blonde hair was slicked back, and inside his suit he was wearing a black buttoned shirt inside, the top button undone.
“how are you here? this is a private gala!” you hissed as he took the seat in front of you, nonchalantly.
“ah, but princess,” jeonghan said, “i’m no stranger.” you wanted to retort, but technically, he was right. he was no stranger - you had called him by his name.
“you still haven’t answered my question,” you pointed out.
“which one?” you wanted to slap jeonghan’s grin off of his face, but you found that you were enjoying his annoying presence more than walking around hearing junghyun talk about his golf clubs.
“how did you get in here?” you asked him, eyes staring right into him. you couldn’t help but admit that he looked gorgeous for a man. one of the hundred reasons you find something wrong about this man, but you still couldn’t pinpoint the exact reason.
“you never asked that question, princess,” jeonghan said, popping a cherry into his mouth. you didn’t know when or how he got that cherry. “you did ask how i was here though.” he winked at you, and you instinctively gagged in disgust, realizing belatedly how that was inappropriate.
“just, please answer my question.” jeonghan opened his mouth to answer but his eye caught something behind your shoulder. you turned your head towards his gaze. junghyun was walking towards you, and he didn’t look delighted one bit.
“i’d love to answer, but your boyfriend there looks like he might kill me,” jeonghan said, palms pressing on the table to lift himself up off.
“he’s not my boyfriend,” you mumbled, and jeonghan opened his mouth to say something else, but stopped himself when he saw junghyun getting nearer.
“see you around, princess,” he said with a wink before walking off. deep down, you wanted to join him, but you had to keep junghyun company.
“who was that?” junghyun had asked when he arrived, handing you your glass of champagne before sitting down on the seat jeonghan had occupied earlier. you bit your lower lip before shaking it, deciding it wasn’t worth telling junghyun.
“no one important,” you said before taking a sip of your champagne, the bubbles feeling like crystalline pearls on the palate, exploding with acidulous flavours that stood out against a rich, smooth background of ripe fruit. junghyun only looked at you, as if wanting to pester you with more questions, but decided against it. if he really wanted to pursue you, you thought, then that would be the best choice.
part two: unanswered prayers.
“so how was junghyun?” soonyoung, aka your analyst, asked you as he handed you your morning coffee for the day. eyes not leaving your computer screen, you took the glass, sipping on the bitter liquid, savoring the sour aftertaste before thanking soonyoung.
you were lucky enough to have your own office - it wasn’t big, but it was cozy for you to spend your nine-to-five five days a week. right in front of the main door, there was a desk, papers neatly stacked in clear holders, a laptop on the center of the desk, and a phone on the right corner of the desk. shelves and cabinets stood on the left side of the office, filled with archives of previous transactions of the company. they were alphabetically sorted - you just couldn’t see anything alphabetically disordered. a medium sized cabinet stood on the right side of your office, right next to the door leading to your team’s office. on the cabinet, there were frames of pictures - of you and your team, you and seungkwan and seokmin, you and your cousin seungcheol, and one with you and your parents - and a small digital clock, displaying 10:42am on the screen. the room was enough for you - one of the senior analysts of the company. soonyoung was one of the people directly under you, and reports directly to you. senior analysts don’t usually have their own offices, but the company was rich and the office was large enough to make more rooms that they gave all senior analysts their own offices, with the catch that they have a connecting door to the analysts’ office room, where three people shared an office.
“what do you mean how was he?” you said, eyes still not leaving your monitor. your cursor hovered over the numbers - trying to figure out how to get it to balance.
“well, you did leave together after the party right?” soonyoung said, pressing his palms on the table to support himself. “they said you guys slept together.” you thanked the heavens you weren’t drinking your coffee then because you choked on your spit. even though you knew the rumors were there, hearing them still surprise you.
“me? and junghyun?” you scoffed. “no way.” soonyoung raised an eyebrow at you, but you ignored him, moving your eyes back to the screen in front of you. “as if i’d love to hear him talk about his achievements and all. gosh, i’d rather die.” you knew it wasn’t good to talk about your boss in a bad way - especially since junghyun was the cfo, and you were technically under him - but one drunken slip up happened and now you and your team were open about each other’s office lives. you tried to be professional in every way possible, but it was impossible when junghyun wasn’t being professional about it. he was being very obvious about his feelings for you - even during work, and that made you very, very uncomfortable.
“and for once i thought you finally gave in to him,” soonyoung shook his head. “as expected of my y/n.” you stripped your gaze from the monitor to glare at soonyoung, who was snickering quietly, his eyes disappearing into lines.
“i’m not your y/n,” you said, your boss mode turned on. “besides, don’t you have some reporting to do? it’s 10.45am and report’s due at 11.” you turned to soonyoung with an eyebrow raised and a smirk plastered on your face.
soonyoung’s eyes widened comically. “oh shit.” he scrambled towards the door on the right side. you laughed inwardly, grabbing your phone and dialed the shortcut to the next door office.
“hello?” a low. husky voice answered.
“tell soonyoung that if he’s even one minute late, he’s going to treat us all to dinner.” the voice laughed and you could hear him repeat exactly what you had said. soonyoung had screamed - he was known to be quite noisy, after all - and you could hear frantic loud keyboard smashing sounds from your office. it wasn't a secret that, apparently, soonyoung was also known to be a tech newbie.
“thanks, wonwoo.”
“anytime,” wonwoo said, and you hung up the call, turning to focus back on the numbers in front of your screen.
at 11 am sharp, you opened to check your email - there were two new emails. you grinned, opening to see that only wonwoo's and junhui's reports were in your inbox. soonyoung really hadn’t handed his report. you reached for the phone again, dialing the familiar number.
“i’ll have bbq grill for tonight,” you said as soon as you hear the line connected. you could hear wonwoo laughing, repeating your words to soonyoung.
“i was just one minute late, y/n!” you could hear soonyoung’s desperate cry, but you only hung up. you grinned - that means today’s dinner was free.
you spent an hour checking the reports before making your own report to send to your manager - a guy who goes by the name of jihoon. he was an introvert, not really talking to anyone else besides meetings, so you didn’t know much about him.
as soon as it hit 12 o’clock, you clicked send. after making sure the email was properly sent, you closed your laptop and grabbed your purse and phone. it was lunch break, and you placed your wallet inside your purse, getting ready to head out for lunch, when soonyoung texted you.
[ soonyoung | 12:05 pm ] junghyun's heading for your office
you groaned to yourself internally. you really didn't want your lunch break to be disturbed by him again, so instead of going out of your office's door, you decided to go out through the other main door - the next room’s, to be exact. you went through the connecting door, greeting wonwoo and junhui, the other guy who’s in your team, and winked at soonyoung. soonyoung stared at you in exasperation.
when you were about to step out of the door, however, wonwoo stopped you.
“wait, junghyun’s walking towards here. you go once he enters your office.” you peeked outside, and you see junghyun walking towards your office, entering the room without a knock. as soon as you saw him step foot inside the room, you slipped outside soundlessly, rushing towards the elevator. you thanked wonwoo in your head, promising to yourself to treat him to coffee sometime soon.
your team was probably covering you - out of all the employees in the company, they know best how bothered you were by junghyun's gestures. luckily, the elevator was open, a few people inside it. you gestured for them to wait as you run towards the elevator. when you finally got on the elevator, you pressed close several times in a hurry before junghyun came to view. thankfully, the elevator doors were already closing, so he couldn’t get in. you gave him an “i’m sorry” smile, but deep down, you were thinking about how to run away from him. you realized you didn’t bring your car keys - why, oh why, did you forgot them?
as soon as you reached the lobby, you sprinted towards the main entrance when you, again, heard a very familiar voice.
“what’s the rush, princess?” you turned towards the voice and saw a very familiar tuft of blonde hair. you didn’t know how he knew you were there or why he was there, but without much thought, you grabbed his wrist and dragged him outside of the building, not looking back to see if junghyun was out of the elevator already or not. he didn’t resist - so you just dragged him outside, to the side of the building.
“jeonghan, do you have a car?” you asked. you didn’t want to beg, but for fuck’s sake you would rather beg on your knees rather than having to spend lunch with junghyun too.
“i do, actually,” said jeonghan, grinning. “you need a ride?”
“please, get me somewhere far from here until lunch break’s over,” you begged. this time, jeonghan was the one who grabbed your wrist, tugging you towards the parking lot.
as soon as jeonghan unlocked his car, you entered the passenger’s side in a hurry - in case junghyun could still see you. jeonghan settled down on the driver’s seat, humming before pressing the start button. the engine let out a growl, the car vibrating as the screen and the lights turned on. jeonghan changed the gear to d, stepped on the gas pedal, and the car started moving forward. you let out a sigh of relief as the car left the parking lot and onto the main road, crowded because it was lunch break.
“so, what do you want to have for lunch, princess?” jeonghan asked. you bit your lower lip, before turning your head towards him.
“do you like jjamppong?”
“we’ll have two please.” jeonghan’s gaze turned towards you and the waiter - it seemed like you were a regular here.
the jjamppong place was only a ten minute ride by car, and jeonghan didn’t expect you’d like jjamppong. he liked jjamppong, but he didn’t think you’d eat here. you seemed like someone who would eat pasta for lunch and steak for dinner to him.
he also didn’t think the first time he went out to eat with you will be at a jjamppong place.
“so,” jeonghan spoke up, “will you ever tell me why you were running through the lobby for your life?” the waiter came again to bring the side dishes to your table, and you picked up two wooden chopsticks, handing one to jeonghan before breaking yours into two (almost evenly). you picked up the kimchi and ate it in your mouth, closing your eyes as if you were savoring the taste and ignoring him in purpose. jeonghan raised an eyebrow. he had to admit - you were smart, unlike all the other girls he’s been with before.
“princess,” jeonghan hummed, breaking his own chopsticks into half before picking up a pickled radish with his chopsticks. “i asked you a question.” you shook your head.
“nuh uh,” you said, taking another piece of kimchi, placing it in your mouth. “my name is not princess.” jeonghan chuckled. he knew that you were just changing the subject so you didn’t have to answer his question, and he let you be, because he was 99% sure of the reason you were running through the lobby for your life.
“then what is it?” jeonghan leaned closer, placing his elbows on the table. you eyed him, but he only nonchalantly shrugged. “you never did tell me your name, so i thought princess was it.” you opened your mouth, ready to argue, but jeonghan only stared at you. a second later, you seemed to come into the realization that you never did tell him your name.
“well,” jeonghan said, chewing a bite of his kimchi. “will you tell me?” you tapped your chopsticks to your chin as if you needed to think, before telling him your name. he hummed.
“y/n,” he said, your name feeling weird on his lips. it was only your third meeting, but jeonghan was already used to calling you princess. but then again, he half-assumed it was actually your name.
“meh. i still prefer princess.” you only gaped at him as he shrugged his shoulders. you were about to protest, but the waiter already came with your food, so you didn’t say anything. jeonghan only chuckled.
it was the first time that he’s been after a girl for three days and still hadn’t gotten into her pants. and it was not just any girl - it had to be the girl that worked at the company they were working at, and also the girl he was after. although, funny enough, you didn’t need to tell jeonghan the reason why you were running through the lobby for him to guess it.
life really does love to play tricks on people, don’t they?
jeonghan dropped you off at the office around one hour later. after three days, he had finally gotten your number, and he didn’t know why he felt so ecstatic. probably because his plan is finally ongoing.
after driving out of your office complex, jeonghan made a u-turn in the opposite direction of his office. he drove towards an expensive looking apartment complex - four tall towers surrounding the center garden, which had a big fountain in the middle of it. he stopped in front of the lobby, dropping his keys to the valet before walking into the lobby.
the lobby wasn’t big, but it looked very luxurious. on the right side was a receptionist table. the receptionist only smiled and nodded at jeonghan in recognition. it’s not the first time jeonghan’s been here, and not the last time he will either.
there were two elevators standing side-by-side on the right side of the apartment - jeonghan walked towards them and pressed the up button. he tapped his feet on the floor as he waited for the elevator. the one on the right dinged, signalling that it has arrived. jeonghan stepped into the elevator, pressing the number 11 before leaning back towards the wall, sighing.
he didn’t like going here, nor does he actually like the person he’s going to meet. but moonsik had basically saved his life and helped him, so he felt like he was bound to moonsik for life. he fidgeted with his phone - anxious to send a message to you, when the elevator dinged. he sighed and slipped his phone back to his pocket.
it’s been a week since he last slept with any women - a record, for sleeping with them and getting stuff bought for. he hadn’t received extra cash for a week now. he has his own job, of course, but it didn’t pay much. jeonghan knew the reason why, but he didn’t want to admit it, for admitting it means that it’s true.
he didn’t realize he walked past his intended destination. he retracted a few steps back, checking the number on it to make sure that it was correct. he knocked on the door before entering, needing no reply to go in.
a black haired man was sitting on the couch, leaning on it. between his fingers was a lit cigarette - the room reeked of cigarette, as a matter of fact - and he was closing his eyes, as if he knew it was jeonghan who came. his front hair was sprawled all around his eyes, giving him a messy look.
“so, how’d it go?” he asked, without opening his eyes. jeonghan scrunched his nose - he hated the smell of cigarettes. it reminded him of his childhood - of someone he never wanted to be reminded of.
“it went smoothly.” answered jeonghan, curtly.
he hadn’t always acted like that with moonsik - back when jeonghan was still fifteen, moonsik was literally his role model. he enjoyed fooling with those women, and jeonghan knew it was all thanks to moonsik. but as jeonghan grew older, he got more involved with moonsik’s business, and jeonghan decided that even though he liked fooling around, he didn’t like the businesses moonsik was associated with. he started distancing himself slowly, and moonsik had always regarded it as the boy finally hitting puberty, never really caring about it anyway.
no matter how hard he tried to distance himself though, jeonghan still couldn’t remove moonsik out of his life completely.
“hm,” moonsik hummed, his voice gruff because of the cigarette. “you seem weird.” jeonghan’s heartstrings tugged. has he caught on…?
“what do you mean?” jeonghan tried to ask, but moonsik only shrugged.
“nothing much,” said moonsik, before pressing his cigarette to the ashtray, extinguishing the fire. he stood up and headed for the refrigerator. “there’s a wedding at gangnam this saturday evening.” he didn’t ask if jeonghan wanted to come or not, for jeonghan never actually said no to his invitations. as a matter of fact, jeonghan also knew that moonsik had no relation to the bride or groom at all - he knew he had overheard it somewhere.
this time, though, jeonghan didn’t feel like going there, and he has to think of a way out of it, quickly.
part three: love at arm’s length.
you just came out of the shower when a notification appeared on the screen of your phone. the promised barbecue party was postponed to the next day, for soonyoung had other plans today, but promised to treat you all tomorrow, so you all decided on tomorrow.
you used one hand to dry your hair, whilst the other reached out to take your phone. you sat on the edge of your bed as you skimmed through your notifications.
[ unknown number | 20:17 ] hello, princess
[ unknown number | 20:17 ] i take it you’re already home
[ unknown number | 20:18 ] so what’s tomorrow’s plans?
you scoffed at the messages, ignoring the tickling sensation at the bottom of your gut. you decided to reply later, heading towards the kitchen to make yourself dinner.
you were in the midst of taking your kimchi out when your phone rang, notifying you of an incoming call. you sighed, thinking of ways to berate seungkwan who always called you at this time of the day, when you saw that it was an unknown number - not just any unknown number, but the one that’s been sending you messages. you bit your lower lip, head shifting into gear, trying to compare which is better, to answer or not to answer. at the fifth ring, you lifted your phone up in your hand and slid the call button.
“hello?” you said, sounding unsure.
“oh, you’re alive,” the voice from the other side of the call answered. you scrunch your nose.
“what do you mean by that?” you rolled your eyes, even though he couldn’t see it. he only chuckled.
“you didn’t reply to my messages, princess,” said jeonghan. “i was worried.” you half-laughed half-scoffed.
“i didn’t realize we were meeting again tomorrow.” you half regretted giving your number to him.
“well, it doesn’t have to be tomorrow,” said jeonghan. “you ate dinner already?” you bit your lower lip again, wondering if you should lie or not.
“don’t try to lie,” said jeonghan. “where’s your house? i’ll pick you up and then we can go and eat dinner.”
“you know, just because i gave you my number doesn’t mean you’re already my friend, yoon jeonghan.” jeonghan only laughed at her words.
“so, you’re saying you’d rather spend your night dirtying your kitchen utensils rather than go out and eat for free?” you perked your eyebrows.
“you never said it was for free.”
“i invited, so of course i should pay for your meal.” you bit your lower lip, mulling over the offer. it did sound tempting. but then again, free meals are always tempting.
after a few seconds of silence, jeonghan spoke up again. “so, what do you say?” you finally gave in and told him your address. you could basically hear him grin from the other side of the phone.
“i’ll be there in ten minutes. get ready, princess.”
you should really have more self control, you chided yourself, as a car appeared near your driveway. “so this is where you live,” said jeonghan as you approached the passenger’s side, opened the door and entered the car. you made a face to him.
“i’m only coming because this is free dinner,” you said, settling down on the passenger's seat before buckling your seatbelt. “otherwise, i wouldn’t have agreed on anything.” jeonghan chuckled at your words as he stepped on the gas pedal, the car finally moving. “whatever you say, princess. any song requests?” you let out a thought, before telling him the name of the song you wanted to hear. he fiddled about with the radio, turning on the song that you requested with one hand, the other on the wheel.
“what are we eating?” you asked jeonghan, who was humming to the song and drumming his fingers on the wheel.
“what do you want to eat?” he asked. you made a face at him. “you’re already driving towards somewhere, so why do you have to ask me what do i want to eat?” jeonghan only let out a small chuckle.
“just in case you have something in mind, princess,” said jeonghan, making a turn towards the right. “if you have nothing in particular, do you mind if we go and eat at my favorite café?” you pondered for a while, before shrugging.
“doesn’t really matter, as long as i get my dinner.” you saw jeonghan smirk from the corner of your eyes as he made another turn, this time to the left. not long after, he slowed down next to a small shop - he was right, for it was a café. but to be honest, you’d think he’d bring you to a fancier café. he seemed like the type of guy to do that.
“surprised?” asked jeonghan, as if sensing your thoughts. you turned to look at him, questioning him with your eyes.
“i don’t usually bring people here,” he said as he stepped on the brake, the car slowly coming to a stop. he turned the engine off, before turning towards you, continuing as he unbuckled his seatbelt. “but you didn’t mind eating at the jjamppong place, so i didn’t think you’d mind eating here either.” suddenly, he leaned over closer to you, and you leaned back in instinct. it took you a few seconds to realize he was unbuckling your seatbelt for you whilst smirking at you. you felt your cheeks grew hotter by the second, and instinctively slapped his hand away.
“hey! a thank you would’ve suffice!” but you ignored him as you got off the car, stalking off towards the restaurant.
something about him seemed off, but you can’t help get dragged towards him. you really, really, really need to have more self-control, for heaven’s sake.
it was ten past ten pm when the two of you finally paid the bill and returned to the car, and you were confused. everything about this guy was fishy, but you couldn’t help but have fun when you’re with him, not that you would say it straight to his face. it was the weirdest thing you ever felt, and yet, you would rather be with him than be with junghyun.
“so,” jeonghan started as the two of you settled down on your seats, “do you have to go home now?” you turned your head to look at him, an eyebrow raised in question.
“well,” he continued, “you up for some late night adventures?”
“late night adventures?” you scoffed. “what are you, a high schooler? and where do you want to go, exactly?” jeonghan grinned at your words. “you’ll see.”
instead of turning around towards your home, jeonghan went the opposite way - towards a highway. a highway? you thought. why a highway?
“relax,” said jeonghan. “i’m not gonna kidnap you. i’m gonna bring you home, so don’t worry.”
“and how am i supposed to trust you?” you said. “we’ve known each other for barely a week now.” jeonghan chuckled.
“just trust me, princess. and you’ll see.” you wanted to rebut - for you know every cell in your body cannot trust this man - but you found yourself feeling curious at the final destination. your heart and brain started arguing, but this time, you found yourself listening to your heart more than your brain.
and when you arrived at the destination, you did not regret it one bit.
it was a beach - you didn’t know there was a beach near here, to be very honest. it wasn’t big either, but when you stepped out of the car, you found that the sea breeze calms you down. it was a peaceful feeling - a feeling you haven’t felt in years.
“princess,” called jeonghan. you turned around instinctively, not realizing how you’ve gotten used to the nickname now. you saw that he had laid a blanket on the sand, and gestured for you to sit on it. you obliged, for you didn’t want to get your clothes dirty. jeonghan was already occupying the left side of the blanket, so you sat down on the right side.
as you settled down, it only occurred to you how romantic this must’ve looked to other people, if other people were there. you felt your cheeks reddening. what the hell is this guy planning?
“are you blushing?” you felt jeonghan poking on your cheek. you instinctively slapped his hand away, and he yelped. “ow! no need for violence!”
you were sure your face was red as tomato now, for you were flustered, and you rarely ever get flustered. “what exactly are you planning, yoon jeonghan?” he cocked his head to the side.
“what do you mean?”
“this,” you gestured with your hands, “and you going to my work place, and asking me out for dinner. what are you trying to do?” jeonghan chuckled.
“if it isn’t obvious to you, princess, i am interested in you.” his words made your heart skip a beat, but you tried to control your facial expression. there was no way you’re going to let this guy know what you’re feeling.
“let’s go out.” you choked on your spit, and started coughing uncontrollably. he only patted your back as if your response was normal.
“we’ve barely known each other for a week!” jeonghan raised an eyebrow at you. “and?” you couldn’t tell him the reason - you couldn’t tell him that his words felt so off, so you came up with another excuse.
“you have to court me properly, duh!” he smirked at your words, and leaned close - too close to your face for your liking.
“do you want me to court you the way junghyun is courting you?” you shuddered at the mere thought of it - but something flashed in your mind.
“how- how do you- how do you know?” you stammered, pointing a hand at jeonghan. “i never told you about junghyun!” jeonghan chuckled.
“i have my sources, princess. i also know he was the reason you were running through the lobby for your life.” you can feel the alarms ringing on your head. you couldn’t think right now - should you listen to him or not?
“well, do you want me to?” he asked again, and, shaking off your thoughts, you grabbed him by the collar.
“i swear, if you court me like junghyun is doing i will never, ever talk with you again.” jeonghan laughed at your words.
“so, you’re allowing me to court you? you must be interested in me too.” you found the faded blush rushing to your cheeks again. you turned your head towards the other way, avoiding jeonghan’s gaze. damn him, you cursed.
“i swear if you don’t stop that-”
“okay, okay, i’ll stop.” jeonghan laughed. “and i won’t court you the way junghyun is. i’ll do it my way, so don’t worry.”
you squeezed your eyes shut. jeonghan was wrong - for there were so many things you have to worry about.
apparently, jeonghan’s way of courting you was to take you out for your lunch breaks, and take you out for dinner.
you also realized that his way of courting you was to save you from the catastrophe that is lee junghyun, which you found yourself grateful for.
the only days he couldn’t take you out for you lunch breaks, you had dragged your team out for lunch, treating them with your own money. they couldn’t say no to it, for it was free food, after all. and you lowkey enjoyed the frustration junghyun was feeling, although you had to admit it was a bit mean.
however, one friday, jihoon had told you to stay in the office because both junghyun and his father wanted to talk to you for an important matter - but they didn’t have a specified time, so you would have to wait for them in your office all day. you were in a bad mood all morning, and you could feel your team feeling your unhappiness, for they all had been a little bit wary that day.
you sent a text to jeonghan to tell him that you wouldn’t be able to go out for lunch on friday, when jeonghan came up with a different suggestion.
[ jeonghan | 11:21 am ] do you want me to get take out for you?
[ jeonghan | 11:21 am ] we can just eat at your office
you bit your lip. you didn’t want junghyun to know about jeonghan’s existence, merely because you didn’t want junghyun to question you endlessly about him. but then again, you kind of felt like the father-son duo were cornering you on purpose, and you didn’t want to fall victim to that. so you agreed to jeonghan’s suggestion.
as the clock turned twelve pm, your team came inside your office through the connected door. “staying behind?” wonwoo asked. you nodded solemnly, before your office phone rang. you picked it up.
“someone’s here to see you - said he made an appointment with you.” the voice over the phone - nayeon, you recognized.
“just let him in,” you replied as you saw your team eyeing each other.
“who’s coming?” soonyoung asked, and you were about to answer when someone knocked on your door.
“come in!” jeonghan appeared as the door opened, two plastic bags of food on one hand. he scanned the room with a grin on his face.
“damn, i didn’t know there would be much people here,” he said as he walked towards your table. “i only bought food for two, though.” soonyoung, wonwoo and junhui were looking at you dumbfounded. you glared at them, signalling them to get out, but soonyoung had a mischievous look on his face.
“ah, you see,” soonyoung started, “miss y/n here never told us she had company coming over.” jeonghan turned his head to look at you as he placed the bags on your table, smirking. “oh, did she?”
“are you going to introduce us?” junhui asked, his tone innocent, but you know there was much more hidden in that innocent voice of his. you smiled, gritting your teeth behind it. “guys, this is jeonghan. jeonghan, this is soonyoung, wonwoo, and junhui. now,” you turned towards the three of them, “i don’t think you guys would like to work overtime today, would you?” the three of them scrambled towards the door, hurrying outside, snorts and snickers could be heard as they exited the room.
you sighed in exhaustion as jeonghan took a seat across you, laughing at you. he took out the food for you - black bean noodles with tteokbokki - as you went to grab him a glass of water to drink. as the two of you settled down, you began eating on your noodles, making a sound of satisfaction as they entered your mouth.
“whoa, slow down there, princess.” jeonghan chuckled as he took a bite of a tteokbokki. “you’re gonna choke yourself to death.”
“that’s probably better than having to face this day,” you said as you swallowed.
“no,” said jeonghan, shaking his head in disappointment as you grabbed a tteokbokki with your chopsticks, taking a bite of them. “then you’re not going to be able to go on our first date tomorrow.” this time, you really did choke, fumbling for your glass of coffee.
“slow down there, princess.” jeonghan was already next to you, patting your back to relieve you from your pain. as you finally calmed down, you turned your head to glare at him. “what do you mean by date?”
“well,” jeonghan said, “you did say i can court you.” he pointed out.
“that doesn’t answer my question!” jeonghan was about to retort back when you heard someone knocking at your door. before you could say anything, the door was already opened, and at the door frame, stood junghyun and his father aka your boss aka ceo lee.
“y/n!” junghyun called, his face bright before noticing jeonghan standing next to you. his face immediately darkened - you wanted to laugh so bad, but you held yourself back.
your boss, however, had a weird expression on his face - something that you couldn’t quite pinpoint. you stood up to greet him, but you found that his attention wasn’t on you, but on jeonghan instead.
“oh,” you said, in initiative, “ceo lee, cfo lee, this is jeonghan. jeonghan, mr lee hyungsik and lee junghyun.” jeonghan had his usual smile on his face as he offered a handshake towards the two of them, but there was something off putting about the smile. it seemed almost… wicked?
“yoon jeonghan,” jeonghan stated as he shook both of their hands. “it’s nice to meet you.” while everyone was smiling, you could sense the thick atmosphere forming. none of their smiles were genuine - they were all fake, and it bothered you, for some unknown reason.
“can’t say the same about you.” you heard junghyun mumbled. you were sure jeonghan heard it too, but even if he did, he showed no signs.
“ah,” ceo lee said, “yoon jeonghan.” as you took another look at your boss’s face, you saw that he was still looking at jeonghan in… awe? fascination? the way he said jeonghan’s name was weird, you thought.
jeonghan, however, made no signs of recognition at all.
“well,” you said, cutting the tense atmosphere in the air, turning to face your guests. “what did you need me for?”
“ah,” your boss spoke up, stammering for some unknown reason. “we- ah, we- well, i forgot what we’re here for.” you saw junghyun turning to face his father in disbelief, but his father did not turn to look at him. “i’ll mail you when i remember what it was about. sorry to interrupt your lunch.” he excused himself and exited your office, junghyun following him in tow - not before glaring at jeonghan, who acted nonchalantly. as soon as they closed the door, you breathed a sigh of relief, closing your eyes.
“wow,” stated jeonghan. “he made it seem as if he's already your boyfriend.” you shuddered at the mere thought of it.
“i know right?” you said, before sitting up and looked at jeonghan. “but the way ceo lee stared at you was weird. did you feel it too?” jeonghan only shrugged.
“i’ve attracted men too, before, y’know?” was the only reply you received, and for some reason, it made you uneasy. not because of the reply - but you felt like there was something way deeper than that.
several weeks passed after the incident, and you and jeonghan have gotten closer. he did take you out on a simple date on the next saturday, and would take you out for lunch or bring it to your office for you. your teammates loved him - sometimes, they would stay behind during lunch and have lunch with him in your office room instead, prompting you to glare at them. it went unnoticed, though.
on the weekends jeonghan didn’t take you out, you went out with your best friends seokmin and seungkwan. you told them about jeonghan, and they were more or less not too surprised about it.
“he called you princess at your first meeting.” seungkwan had simply stated. you scrunched your nose at his words.
“that doesn’t mean anything, though.” seungkwan chortled, and seokmin only looked at you, smiling sheepishly.
“well,” seokmin said, “he did sound like a flirt, to be honest. but then again, if he was only a flirt, he wouldn’t have gone through lengths to get to know you.”
“and more or less, we could see you not having any interest in junghyun,” said seungkwan. “though i don’t know why said guy cannot notice it, even though it’s so obvious.” the three of you had laughed at seungkwan’s words before going into a different conversation.
one particular saturday, your period came earlier than expected, and it was, for lack of better words, hell. you were curled up inside your blanket, writhing in pain, barely able to pick up your phone. so when your doorbell rang, you were filled with rage as you got out of your comfort zone to berate whoever was at the door.
when you saw jeonghan’s face on the doorframe, you scowled, not before letting him in (for in his hands were the familiar take-out bag of your favorite jjamppong and you didn’t want for it to go to waste).
“what are you doing here?” you asked as he headed towards the dining table. he carefully put the take-out jjamppong on the table, before turning to face you, who was already headed into your bedroom again. jeonghan trailed behind you, following you to your bedroom.
“i called your phone a hundred times, but there was no answer, so i came to check up on you.” you rolled your eyes, but he couldn’t see you.
“you sure you weren’t lying?” you said before crawling inside your covers again, sighing at the warmth before the pain in your lower abdomen and back attacked you, causing you to groan in pain. jeonghan called your name in worry.
“are you okay?” you glared at him. “what part of this looks okay to you?” jeonghan winced.
“that time of the month?” you nodded, not before groaning once more at the stabbing pain. jeonghan looked flustered, as if not knowing what to do.
“uh, what should i do?” you groaned, incapable of letting out an answer. he sat on the edge of your bed carefully, as if testing the waters. when you didn’t kick him out of the bed, he took it as a positive sign.
“should we cuddle?” he asked. the pain occupied your mind more that you couldn’t comprehend what he just said, and only nodded. so he snuck into your blanket, positioning some pillows behind him, before leaning backwards into it, pulling you into his arms. he had his arms around your stomach, your back against his chest, and he hummed an unfamiliar song to your ears. you didn’t know how or what happened, but you felt a lot better than you were a few seconds ago that you sighed and snuggled closer into his chest.
he didn’t stop humming and you found your eyes getting heavier and heavier, finally getting the sleep you couldn’t get a few hours ago, before reality hit you hard in the face.
“what the fuck are you doing?” jeonghan stopped humming and stared at you in surprise.
“uh, trying to make you feel better?”
“yeah, but, why in my bed?” he stared at you, still dumbfounded, until he managed to let out a laugh.
“you said it’s okay to cuddle, princess,” said jeonghan, and you felt your cheeks getting hotter. was the pain that bad that you couldn’t even remember what you had said?
“besides,” continued jeonghan, “you’re still here in my arms. so i know you’re feeling a lot better than you were earlier.” you couldn’t even deny it because it’s true - and you found yourself not being able to leave his arms even if you had complained earlier.
“you don’t have to fight the feeling, y/n,” said jeonghan, and you got taken aback. he never called you by your name, so it felt weird in your ears. “if you like it, then just say you like it. i’m not here trying to make you fall for me or anything, i’m just trying to make you feel better.”
“so, if another woman feels like this you’re gonna cuddle them too?” you said, absentmindedly. you didn’t realize what you had said until a few seconds of silence later, and when you did, you buried your face into jeonghan’s chest instinctively, trying to hide the blush that was forming in your cheeks. however, jeonghan noticed what you had said and laughed.
“well, it depends. are you jealous?” you could literally hear him smirk, so you only scoffed in response.
“not an answer, princess.” ah. back again to princess, eh?
“if you don’t give an answer i’m gonna stop cuddling you.” your pride still stopped you from answering, so you kept quiet, testing out jeonghan’s bluff. true to his words, he unwrapped his arms around you and slipped out of the blanket, causing you to lose the warmth he had covered you with earlier. he stood next to the bed, while you hid yourself inside the covers.
“one last chance, y/n,” said jeonghan. you groaned in response.
“fine, ugh, yeah, i’m jealous. happy now?” you expected a smirk, but jeonghan only smiled softly at you, before crawling inside your blanket, snaking an arm around your waist as he tucked his chin on top of your head, with you snuggled into his chest for the second time that day.
“see, now that wasn’t so hard, wasn’t it?” he said, but you only whined because you felt the pain rushing towards your abdomen again. he massaged your back softly and hummed the unfamiliar tune again. you didn’t want to admit it to him, but you were in bliss.
“princess?” jeonghan called. you were halfway towards your dreamland at that point, so you only managed a hum in response.
“are you asleep?” you shook your head, feeling your consciousness being dragged into the surface.
“well,” said jeonghan, and for some reason, you detected nervousness in his voice. “be my girlfriend.” at those three words, your eyes opened up.
“eh?” jeonghan chuckled at your response. “what do you mean, ‘eh’? you know i like you.”
“well, but,” you stammered. “that was unexpected.” deep down, however, you know that the confession itself wasn’t the thing that surprised you.
jeonghan tucked a finger under your chin and lifted your head up, causing you to make eye contact with him. “i’m serious. be my girlfriend.” you scanned his words, trying to find anything in them. but there was nothing hidden in his words.
for the first time after meeting him, you felt like his words were 100% true.
“you couldn’t have asked me when i’m not curled up in my bed, writhing in pain thanks to my period?” you scrunch your nose at him, and he only laughed, pulling you closer into his arms, as if it was possible.
“i don’t care,” said jeonghan. “you look beautiful to me even now, and i wouldn’t want it any other way.” you smiled at him, before replying. “okay then.”
jeonghan only looked at you dumbfounded. “okay? as in… as… as in?”
“as in, yes i’ll be your girlfriend, you idiot.” you rolled your eyes at him, but he was grinning from ear-to-ear, and at that moment, you wondered why you had doubted his feelings for you in the beginning.
he buried his face in your hair, dropping a soft kiss on the top of your head. a few minutes later, when you felt the pain in your abdomen slowly disappearing, you sat up, causing jeonghan to sit up too. you were still in his arms - as if he had no plans on letting you go at all. and for once, you didn’t mind.
not until your stomach growled in hunger, at least.
jeonghan only chuckled as you complained to him, wanting to eat the jjamppong he brought you earlier. instead of answering back, he only looked at you with soft eyes, and you found yourself enthralled in them.
and when he leaned in closer for a kiss, you didn’t back away either.
part four: could be the two of us.
it’s been half a year since you and jeonghan started dating, and he’s been nothing short of the best boyfriend. the pictures on the left cabinet of your office had increased by one - a picture of you and jeonghan at the beachside he brought you to the first time you guys had went out together. he had his arms around you, facing the camera with a grin as the wind blew his hair backwards, and to you he looked nothing short of an angel.
and surprisingly, none of his words had sounded suspicious to you anymore. you couldn’t help but think if it’s because of your growing feelings for him, but you could still sense if others were lying, so you decided to trust him and his words.
instead of weekend dates, the two of you spend your days in your house more - cooking together, playing games together on your switch (with jeonghan beating your ass in mario kart almost every time). one time, seungkwan and seokmin showed up unannounced to your house, and the four of you played a game of mario kart too, which jeonghan still ended up winning.
“hyung, stop cheating!” seungkwan had groaned, but jeonghan only let out a cheeky grin. “it’s called talent, seungkwan. talent.”
you’ve been over to jeonghan’s a few times, but the two of you agreed that your house was far more comfortable than his apartment. he slept over at yours for a lot of times that half of his clothes were probably in your closet. though sometimes, you didn’t find the reason for all the clothes when he was going to discard them to the floor in the end of the day anyways.
however, the down side to it was the fact that junghyun wouldn’t stop bothering you, not even after you told him you were dating jeonghan now.
“so what?” junghyun had said. “you’re not married yet.” you only smiled, gritting your teeth inside. if he wasn’t one of your higher-ups, you would’ve berated him already right there and then.
but instead of getting your own revenge, jeonghan avenged you.
one particular afternoon, because it was the end of the month, you had a lot of work that you didn't even dare trying to leave your office. being the good boyfriend he was, jeonghan decided to come and bring his homemade meal to your office (you had wondered if jeonghan had his own job and he said he does, but he was free to do what he wanted. lucky him.) and on that particular day, junghyun decided it was a good time to barge into your office, uninvited.
you gritted your teeth when you saw him walking towards your table. “what do you want?” junghyun didn’t take notice of jeonghan, and sat down on the other chair next to him.
“let’s eat lunch together too.” you swallowed all the anger in your body, gathering all the remaining un-angry cells in your body, trying to speak to junghyun calmly when jeonghan beat you to it.
“i’m sorry, but she’s having a guest here and you’re barging in uninvited?” junghyun ignored him and only stared at you. you wanted to retort. what kind of person asked to have lunch together and did not bring anything to eat?
“sir.” jeonghan’s voice was firm, and you’ve never heard his voice like this before. it looked to you that junghyun was trying hard to stay ignorant, but jeonghan wasn’t losing.
“i don’t think it’s gonna be a good sight to the other employees if they see the ceo’s son being thrown out of the room, is it?” jeonghan said, a sly grin on his face. “y/n might be holding back because you’re her senior, but i don’t work here, and i can do anything i want to you.”
“if you touch me, i’ll make sure you’ll never be able to step foot in this building again.” junghyun had threatened jeonghan, and jeonghan only laughed - something in it sounded evil, but to you, he was looking very, very, very hot.
“try it. be my guest.” jeonghan said, returning to his meal. “but then again, wouldn’t it be a funny story? the ceo’s son kicked his crush’s boyfriend out of this building because he’s green with envy.” you stifled a laughter when you saw junghyun’s face getting redder by the second. he stood up abruptly and glared at jeonghan.
“it’s not over,” said junghyun, gritting his teeth as he stalked towards the door. “i will get you, one day, i swear to god.”
“you can get me, but you still can’t get your crush.” jeonghan sing-songed. junghyun glared at him before slamming the door of your office shut, and you bursted out in laughter.
“oh, thank fuck.” you sighed in relief. “he’s been pestering me so much more these days it’s driving me crazy that i can’t do anything about it.” jeonghan scrunched his nose in disapproval.
“what kind of unprofessional dude becomes your company’s cfo? sounds like nepotism to me.” you only shrugged.
“to be honest, i don’t know why he’s here either. i think if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s the ceo’s son, someone else would’ve been the cfo,” you said, swallowing the last bite of your meal. “anyways, you sounded hot earlier.” jeonghan raised an eyebrow at you. it was, as a matter of fact, very rare for you to say those kind of things.
“so do you want me to pick fights with your ceo’s son every time i come here?” you shuddered at the mere thought of it.
“no, but the way you laughed at him? kinda hot.”
“noted. i’ll do that next time we’re in bed.” you threw your memo pad at him as he laughed his mischievous laugh that you’ve grown to love.
after that, everything went smoothly - so smooth, that you couldn’t help but think that it’s just the calm before the storm. true to your words, something did happen only a few weeks after the incident with junghyun.
you were in your office, waiting for your team’s daily reports before getting off work when someone knocked on your door. without thinking much, you let them enter, crying out the words ,”come in!” and to your surprise, it was your ceo.
“oh!” you stood up to greet him, but he just dismissed you before closing the door behind him. as he walked towards your table, you saw his eye stopping on the cabinet at your left side, checking out your pictures. his eyebrows suddenly furrowed, and you frowned.
“are you,” he started, “are you dating jeonghan?” huh, you thought. he barely remembers the name of your team, so how come he remembers the name of your boyfriend that he met only once in his whole life?
“yeah, i am.” you said in confidence. “i know junghyun has been after me for years now, but i can’t say that i feel something for him.” ceo lee only sighed. you stared at his face, and felt something tugged your heartstrings. something about his face seemed... familiar?
“junghyun hasn’t really a lot of experience in that area, so i wish you would consider my son as a partner. there’s nothing you need to worry about if you choose him instead of your boyfriend right now. we have money, connections, everything for you to live comfortably.” you sighed internally, your earlier thoughts vanishing into thin air. was junghyun so desperate that he had to ask his father to court you for him?
“mr. lee,” you said, “i’m truly sorry, but i cannot be with your son. sure, the two of you may have the money and the connections and assets, but i don’t think i will be happy. jeonghan makes me happy, and i don’t feel forced to date him.” you braced yourself, ready for your ceo to get mad at you for refusing his offer, but he only sighed in defeat as he turned towards the door. he had his hand on the doorknob, before calling your name one last time.
“be careful of him,” he had said. “yoon jeonghan. he’s not who you think he is.”
and for some reason, that left you very, very uncomfortable.
it was in the middle of the night when the two of you finished. jeonghan dropped down next to your body, the euphoric feeling still lingering as he pulled your body towards him, skin to skin. you hummed in response, arms circling around his neck, turning to look for his eyes.
his eyes caught yours, and he dipped down to press a soft kiss on your lips. it started slow and soft, but it escalated deeper as he swept a tongue against your lower lip. you let out a moan (god, how he loved the sound) and he slipped his tongue inside, exploring your mouth. however, you suddenly pulled back, sitting up, leaving him whining in response.
“you know if we don’t stop we’re gonna continue and i don’t think i have the energy for it.” jeonghan only chuckled at your words, lifting his body to sit up with you, before wrapping his arms around your waist, caging you in a back hug.
“we can sleep for an hour and go for another round.” you slapped his arm as he let out another laugh.
“you’re saying it as if you have the ability to wake up in one hour.” jeonghan pondered for a while.
“well true, i don’t think i’ll be able to wake up then.” he tucked his chin on the crook of your neck, and you only hummed as he swayed your body side by side.
“jeonghan.” jeonghan hummed in response. “today, ceo lee came to my office.” he turned towards you, an eyebrow raised.
“what did he say?” his eyes squinted. you seemed… nervous? fidgety? you were playing with your fingers - a habit that jeonghan noticed you do when you get nervous.
“well,” you said, sounding unsure, “he said, uh, he said to be careful of you.”
something struck him as he stopped swaying both your bodies, shoulders tensing. you noticed it immediately, and turned towards him.
“are you okay?” you asked, and jeonghan felt like it was a pull towards reality. he nodded, his shoulders relaxing a little bit.
“i’m okay,” he assured you. “also, maybe your ceo meant, be careful of him, he’s going to make you whipped as hell.” you rolled your eyes as you slapped his arm again, and he only laughed it off, burying his face into the the crook of your neck.
hours later, when he finally lulled you to sleep, he opened his phone to see several messages from someone he’s been trying to avoid.
[ moonsik | 12:16 am ] where have you been?
[ moonsik | 12:17 am ] i haven't heard from you for months now
[ moonsik | 12:28 am ] come to my house sometime this week.
he closed his phone and tossed it to the bedside table, but he knew he couldn’t run away from him any longer.
against his own wishes, after he told you he was unavailable for the weekend and you said you had something to do, jeonghan went over to moonsik’s apartment. he hadn’t been there ever since he started dating you, and had hoped that moonsik would leave him alone already.
as he arrived in front of moonsik’s apartment, he took a deep breathe, and let out a big sigh. he hated the smell of cigarettes. it reminded him of what his mother went through, and he didn’t want to remember that part of his life anymore.
he braced himself and knocked on the door three times, before opening the door. inside, moonsik was sitting on the couch, smoking a cigarette. on his coffee table sat his ashtray - he’s been smoking almost one pack a day, and the smell sickened him so badly, but he held it in.
“it’s been a long time, jeonghan.” he said, breathing out smoke from his mouth. “why do you look so tense? come and sit next to me.” jeonghan obliged, but he felt his body went tense all over.
from the first time he met moonsik, he knew moonsik was a red light. it was obvious. but back then he was still a kid, trying to fight for his own life. he hadn’t given a fuck. but now, he wished he could take it all back.
“how are you?” moonsik asked, and jeonghan only nodded absentmindedly. “good, i guess?”
“haven’t heard from you in years,” said moonsik, taking another puff of his cigarette, and jeonghan only hummed in response. moonsik turned to look at jeonghan. “how’s your plan going?”
that struck a nerve in jeonghan’s body. for he had completely forgotten about his plan.
“it’s, ugh, it’s going- it’s going great,” jeonghan stuttered, the gears in his brain turning around in a hurry trying to find a way out of it.
“oh, really?” moonsik leaned closer towards jeonghan’s face, and jeonghan leaned backwards in instinct. “why are you so jumpy? is there something you’re hiding from me?”
“it’s none of your business,” jeonghan said without thinking. moonsik raised an eyebrow, crushing his cigarette in his ashtray. jeonghan grimaced internally.
“none of my business?” moonsik’s voice rose in anger, and jeonghan curled his fist. “i literally raised you after your mother died, and you have the right to say that it’s none of my business? anything connected to you is my business.”
“you’re not my mother,” said jeonghan. “you didn’t give birth to me, you only taught me how to survive. i thank you for that, but we have nothing else in common.” moonsik let out a maniac laugh, mocking jeonghan.
“you forgot about your plan, didn’t you?” moonsik sneered. “you fell in love with the girl. you wouldn’t chase after a girl for two days, let alone a week. but you keep going for this girl - you definitely forgot about it. that’s why you’re so scared of coming to me.” jeonghan desperately tried to deny moonsik’s words, but he couldn’t bring himself to say anything, for he knew that moonsik was right on spot.
“what’s the matter? cat got your tongue?” mocked moonsik, and jeonghan felt the anger inside him bubble. he brought his fist upwards, flying it towards moonsik’s left cheek. it hit moonsik as he growled in pain, eyes glaring at jeonghan, before punching jeonghan in his stomach. jeonghan groaned as moonsik threw multiple punches into his stomach, unable to fight back, for moonsik was physically more gifted than himself. he was about to let moonsik beat him to death, his eyes getting heavier by the minute, before your face appeared behind his closed eyelids.
it was as if you were the source of his energy. his hand found moonsik’s collar, and he stood up, pushing moonsik backwards towards the wall. moonsik was grinning like a psychopath. behind his fringes, his eyes were shining - as if he was taking pleasure in the fist fight. jeonghan knew he had to get out of that place quickly.
“i don’t mind if you cut contact with me,” said moonsik, laughing like a psychopath. “i don’t fucking care! because if she ever find out about you,” he leaned in closer to jeonghan’s face with a smirk that scared jeonghan out of his wits, “she’s going to leave you. for who wants to be with a weakling like you?”
jeonghan’s anger peaked as he punched moonsik in the face one last time before heading out of his apartment, moonsik’s laughing voice echoing in his mind. he took out his phone and blocked moonsik’s number from his phone as he ran for his car. as soon as he got inside his car, he leaned his head on the steering wheel, breathing hard, the pain in his abdomen hurting like hell. he started the engine, letting his mind take him anywhere else but this place.
unsurprisingly, his mind brought him to your house.
“jeonghan?” you answered the door, before gasping in surprise. jeonghan figured he must’ve looked like shit for you to react like that. behind you, a man jeonghan has never seen before appeared - with a boy, around the age of three or four, in his arms. the man had noticeably large ears, and facial features that resembled a camel, and the kid looked exactly like him.
before jeonghan could ask who the man was, you had ushered him inside, visibly worried. he made you sit on the couch, before mumbling around for the first aid kit. the man who stood with you let go of the kid, before following you to look for the first aid kit, which left jeonghan and the kid alone in the living room.
jeonghan doesn’t hate kids, but he doesn’t have much experience with them either. so when the kid looked up at jeonghan curiously, his only response was a tired grin.
“are you okay?” the kid had asked. jeonghan nodded, trying hard to bear the pain in his stomach.
“i’m fine, you don’t need to worry.” the kid looked up at jeonghan, head tilted in confusion.
“but dada and aunt y/n are worried.” aunt? this kid is your nephew? you said you didn’t have any siblings though?
“jeonghan!” your conversation was cut short when you and the man earlier came running to you with the first aid kid in your arms. as you arrived, you fumbled with the box until the man took over and told you to sit next to jeonghan instead. you obliged, sitting next to him and forced him to lie down, head on your lap. jeonghan found he had no energy to fight back, so he did as was told.
“aunt y/n,” the kid called. “is he okay?” you nodded, though to jeonghan, you looked like you were worried out of your mind. you had your arms around jeonghan’s face, checking around for the bruises and any other wounds jeonghan might have.
“this might hurt a little,” the man said before pressing a cotton of antiseptic to jeonghan’s wounds. jeonghan hissed in pain, and you grabbed his hand in instinct. he squeezed it to hold out his pain, and by the time the man was done treating his wounds, he was sweating hard. you were wiping his sweat away with the sleeves of your shirt, murmuring words of “it’s gonna be fine” and “it’s okay, i’m here” to jeonghan’s here.
and jeonghan completely believed in your words.
