So here's what's been going on with the Odyssey in the "chud" circle of youtuber critics who are constantly accused of running some kind of cult-like "grifter" misformation network that destroys movies with "manufactured outrage" because they hate women and minorities (they don't, but outright dishonesty is all the journo-critic class has going for them):
"This looks like it's going to be bad, because the costumes look bad, the casting looks bad, Nolan keeps saying really stupid shit in interviews about the music and the dialog, he's using the terrible feminist retelling for the script, and journos are already locking in a narrative to protect this shit weeks before it is even out, which is shady as fuck."
Here's what the Journo-critic class has been saying now that the movie is out and they have to take Nolan's dick out of their mouths so they can actually talk about the movie:
"The chuds were wrong! They said this movie would never get perfect scores, but we gave it perfect scores and had articles pre-written that center this entire movie as an event about the chuds being wrong about what we, the critics and journos, were going to say about it!"
It's honestly so fucking confusing because, aside from the fact that no one ever claimed that it would flop (which is not to say it doesn't deserve to) or that critics wouldn't suck it off for it's obviously subversive and retarded creative decisions, there does not feel like there's that much genuine hype or interest in the movie outside of people using it as a culture war battlefield. Which is doubly strange, because if the rumors are to be believed, it's because they bought up most theaters to pad out the box office. Possibly because they hoped that saying theaters were sold out and that it had an impossibly perfect rating from critics would create so much hype and demand for the movie that people would be rushing to find any showings they could, but who can really say?
The negative reviews you can find mostly point out that the movie is boring as fuck, does not understand the source material, and Nolan made a lot of very strange, very misguided decisions. With the exception of a few well-crafted shots and scenes and some practical effects with forced perspective and camera trickery, it's not something that deserves this kind of unconditional defense.
Those with intense familiarity with the source material, including the classicist whose translation Nolan used as the basis for the script, will tell you that Nolan fucked up everything.
More mild reviews say that it's alright and some actors do a great job, although they don't have much to say about accuracy, but again, still not a 10/10.
The glowing reviews seem more intent on virtue signalling and telling the world that they thought it was epic and also that they have no opinions, whatsoever, on the casting, the butchering of key elements of the original epic, the confused themes, and so on. Just that the chuds were wrong and it was the best movie ever, and that they are on the "right side of history" for sucking off a massive Hollywood vanity project that seems to have almost exclusively cast big names (and Ellen Page) and popular stars to, quite literally, culturally appropriate the Odyssey as part of some extremely elaborate middle finger that will surely get lots of awards at all of those award shows that have abysmal viewership anyway.
The movie may be okay on its own. I don't actually care. I don't think a lot of people praising this movie and trying to frame it as this monumental cultural event that destroyed the "anti-woke community" actually care about the movie either. They really care about the idea of "winning" against the chuds and proving that wokeness is not an ideological cancer, but not the movie.
They will probably refrain from ever talking about it again once the news cycle moves. Probably around the time that the new Spider-man outperforms Odyssey so badly in a few weeks that theaters will be cancelling screenings just to hold more showings of Spider-man. (Nevermind all the other movies that already strongly outperformed the Odyssey in the past few months alone)
The only thing I really want to know is the "Why?" of it all. What possessed the entire Hollywood machine, plus hundreds of journos and critics, plus countless unpaid normal people to feel like this was the movie that they needed to plant their flag on. What possessed someone to buy out at least some theaters to make the movie look popular? Why do all these people who have never had a single opinion on Homer's writings and the Odyssey in general, suddenly believe that it is so important to bastardize that particular story and pretend like this kind of blatantly antagonistic attitude to adapting it was a totally benign and neutral approach?
It's not like Nolan is actually that important to their mish-mashed ideological agenda, either way. His movies are more like memes than they are genuine cultural events. It's not like "wokeness" needs Nolan as its champion, and not like they'd really lose anything at all if yet another poorly conceived vanity project flopped. Let's be real here... Hollywood will do this shit again and it will be fucking terrible, no matter what consensus the critics try to manufacture.
It's like these people believed that Nolan had the power to legitimize the misguided and failure-prone agenda of race and sex swapping and source material-butchering that they've been blindly cheering on for years. Because the way they keep bringing up "go woke, go broke" really seems like they were so desperate for a win that they thought a real director, like Nolan, was going to prove that being a fucking egotistical idiot with terminal hollywood brainrot is actually a good thing and can make great movies. But also, retroactively, that all the flop woke movies in were actually great, but some slurring youtuber tricked the world out of seeing them and making them as successful as they deserved to be.
It just seems desperate and pathetic, and it really doesn't have to be for anyone involved. This is an entirely voluntary issue and these people still decided to put themselves through a self-inflicted humiliation ritual on behalf of a movie that really doesn't seem like it was worth it.
