helen wakefield had to make a choice; two, actually. the first is whether to accept the safety net being offered out by shield (she does). the second is how severely to cut her ties with everything else to deal with the mess that required a safety net in the first place. she decides it's best to cut almost everything. almost. and so maria hill now exists. unfortunately, the start of ellis's behavioral problems at school start to bloom around the same time, only aware that they had to move and it was different than the previous times. he didn't know why though, and neither his mom or grampa graves were telling him much of anything. he was easy to wind up and get into trouble before all the changes and confusion, but after turns into a pattern of aggression and outbursts leading to detentions, suspensions, and expulsion. mostly grampa graves has to deal with everything leading up to the last one, where his mom shows up long enough for stony conversations with faculty before taking him home and getting another school sorted. the few times she's not at work or dealing with schools, she's trying to teach him how to resist people upsetting him and how to deal with being upset without adding to the trouble. after the second change of schools, the two of them seem to find a balance with each other again though. he settles, a little bit, and she makes sure to check in with him even on the longest stretches away from home. the more time passes, the more she tells him about a handful of things, and having answers makes it easier to let go of some of the anger. and she never lies to him, really. sometimes he gets told she can't share something, sometimes she promises to explain when he'd older, but at least it's honest. and he can deal with everything else as long as it stays that way, though there's a part of him that wonders if it will, the more he learns.

If Ellis looks more tired than usual, it's because he is. He's spent a large portion of the day with the same little grey tabby following him about, and a defeated sigh follows when he inevitably pauses walking and the cat is immediately climbing the leg of his jeans with a meowed demand to be held. "Is this normal? I've been dealing with this since breakfast," he confesses, though any note of frustration being loudly overrun by contented purring.

Octavian doesn't bother to hide his laughter, bending to pluck the little thing from Ellis's leg, taking a moment to detangle its claws from the fabric.
Then, he takes hold of Ellis's hands with his free one, cradling the kitten in his elbow. "At least carry your newfound friend in your arms." Subtly, he checks under its tail. "Her little legs must be tired."
The augur maneuvers Ellis's palms into a cupped position, depositing the cat into them. "What are you going to name her?"
don't think about how quiet camp is after the battle of manhattan. don't think about the days ( the weeks really ) of looking for bodies and some of them never being found. don't think about the cabins working on burial shrouds together because everyone lost people. don't think about the quiet at meals and no one is being forced to sit at specific tables because otherwise the space is too empty. don't think about ellis knowing he doesn't like to have attention at singalongs. but he can't take the silence anymore, so one night he stays standing in the amphitheater instead of sitting. don't think about a twelve and half year old single kid of ares standing with his hands clenched at his sides to make sure his voice is steady and he starts to sing and he doesn't care if anyone joins or not, he just couldn't take the silence. and he realizes he HAS to do this, to prove that anyone can, and to take the pressure off of the few survivors from cabin seven that might have felt like they would have had to rush their own grieving to lead the singalongs again. don't think about ellis not realizing until that moment, that night, how many songs of grieving he learned just from the nature of who he grew up around. don't think about the only wavering pause being when he starts crying because he realizes the song he's singing is one of the only ones he learned from his namesake ( which he sung after losing men in battle decades earlier ) and wondering if any of his friends are getting to meet any of his namesake's friends right now.
A character who is tied up and gagged, but their eyes speak volumes. The rage, the promise that when they get free, everyone here is dead.
