The hazards of urban skiing

Slopestyle skiers made a successful debut at the Winter Olympics. Many miles away in the US, skiers use city settings to perform similar tricks.

Skiing Backwards

Skiing backwards is a skill needed for many of today’s tricks. It seems very intimidating at first, but with practice, you can ski the whole hill that way! If you want to get serious about skiing backwards, first you’ll want to get some twin tips. Twin tip skis have curved tip at both the front and back, which make them much easier for skiing backwards. When skiing backwards, have one ski slightly forward and the other slightly back. This will allow you to look over your shoulder and see where you’re heading. When making turns, you will want to switch the shoulder you’re looking over and adjust the position of your feet accordingly. That’s all there is to it! Just keep practicing and soon you will be hitting switch tricks all over the mountain.

Learning to Rail Grind

Rail Grinding can be intimidating. All over the web you see videos of people slamming into rails and getting hurt just trying to grind. While grinding can be painful if you fail, it’s easy if you just learn how to correctly balance. The problem for most skier’s is that when they try to perform a simple grind they end up leaning back and their skis slip out from under them. Skier’s are so used to leaning back when their skis are sideways to stop, that when they first try to grind they lean back, and it ends painfully. Luckily, there’s an easy way to train, and you can do it right now in the off season! The only thing you need is a skateboard. Set the skateboard in front of you about 10 feet away. Then all you have to do is to run at it, jump on the skateboard and ride off. This exercise helps you learn how the balance that is necessary when your grinding on skis. If you practice this simple exercise multiple times, all you need to do is transfer it to your skis. Start off with a simple rail and just remember to center yourself over your skis the same way you center yourself jumping on the board. It’s as easy as that!

It takes insane talent to keep that much control with so much speed and so little space. Check it out if you want to have your mind blown!

Your First 360

A simple 360 looks easy to perform, but it can be a daunting task for a skier who is new to trying tricks. I remember the first time I tried one. It looked so easy, but I had never done any tricks before, so it was hard just to work up the courage to try. After trying multiple times, I still couldn’t get the rotation and I was getting tired of face slams in the snow. Eventually I was able to get it down, and now it’s second nature. For your first 360, I’ll save you the trouble of failing as many times as I did, and give you some tips I wish I had gotten before I tried. The first thing is to find a good jump, and to keep on trying at the same jump. A lot of my first attempts were on little jumps or drops that I came across as I was skiing. Those never ended well, so I’d advise to find a quality jump in the park, and to keep on trying the trick on that same jump until you get it down. The second tip is to use your arms. Your arms are one of the main things to kick off your rotation, so make sure to extend them before the jump, and throw them in the direction you want to spin when you take off. By doing this, you’ll spin pretty fast and it will be easy to get enough rotation. The last tip is to use your head. This is the most important tip. When you take off for the jump, twist your head and look over your shoulder. Wherever your head goes, the rest of your body will follow. If you make sure to look in the direction you spin you will easily make the rotation and you can spot the landing. It’s that easy! If you do these three things, you’ll be sending 3′s off every jump in no time. Good luck!

Backyard Jib

Here’s a picture of the Jib I started making. The finished product will be covered with turf and will have a  PVC rail placed after the jump. I am hoping by building this I can train during the off season and improve a lot on my rail technique. If you ever want to build one yourself there are plenty of tutorials online with step-by-step instructions. Hopefully this leads to a lot of improvement for this upcoming season!

My Boots

These are my boots that I got last season. They are Full Tilts, which were created by Jason Levinthal; the same guy who invented the skis I’m rockin’. Full Tilts are a 3 piece boot made up of the lower shell, the upper cuff and the tongue. The tongue determines the flex of the boot, so with these boots you can change out tongues to have a stiffer or more flexible boot. Before these boots, I always had to fight through the pain of uncomfortable boots. Last season, all that changed. These boots are extremely comfortable and make skiing an even better experience. If you’re looking for some comfortable, lightweight boots, Full Tilts are the way to go.

My skis

This is a picture of the J skis that I got last season. If you’ve never heard of J skis, they’re worth checking out! J skis are created by Jason Levinthal, the creator of the original twin tip skis and full tilt boots. Each ski design is sold in a limited quantity and is hand signed and numbered by Jason. I used these skis all season and it was definitely worth what i spent. These skis are the “Allplay” model, and they are designed for all types of terrain and all types of snow. Last year I put them to the test on off-trail powder, steep icy slopes and on the park. They handled like a dream, I couldn’t imagine a better pair of skis!
