i’m rewatching heartbreak high and this isn’t a new thought i’ve just had i thought this pretty much immediately when i watched season 1 when it came out but sasha is so awful!!!!! she pretends to be this progressive environmental social justice loving girlboss but she’s such a bitch and she’s ableist as fuck and she tries to justify all her shitty behavior and UGH

quinni was 100% right when she said “ok sia” when sasha was being shitty about her being autistic, she shouldn’t have dated her at all like she was showing her true colors the whole time and quinni just wanted to go out with her so bad that she overlooked a lot of the problems that she noticed, like yes she’s autistic and she might not have picked up on everything and also i almost always feel like we as the audience can notice more issues between characters than the characters do bc we as the audience have a more neutral external perspective but like quinni pretty much immediately started noticing shitty things sasha said and called her out on it and sasha always tried to play it off.

like when they’re both in the school nurse’s office in s1e2 and sasha calls the kid who needed his epipen “bubble boy” and quinni says “isn’t that kind of mean to call him that?” and sasha goes “well… no because i’d never say it to his face” BITCH THAT’S STILL MEAN! and she’s ridiculously self centered, she yaps about herself the entire time she and quinni are on their date and doesn’t notice that quinni got super overstimulated, she was rude about hanging out with missy and doing drugs at the mardi gras party, she almost made quinni late to the book signing she was super excited about bc she made them stop for frozen yogurt and then ran into a friend and was shitty about quinni getting overwhelmed on the bus (“she’s kinda ‘on the spectrum’”) and she tried to take full credit for the protest amerie organized even though she barely actually did anything, and that’s just season 1! i haven’t rewatched season 2 enough to list the shitty stuff sasha did just off the top of my head but omg i cannot stand her

something I really like in HBH is how Darren being nonbinary is portrayed in such a matter of-fact way and the show never feels the need to explain it. Actually, they never even say the word nonbinary! There's one scene establishing Darren uses they/them and it's in the service of showing their worldview and their relationship with their family. We have a theme of Darren feeling like an outsider because they're visibly gender-nonconforming and queer, but not so much because of their identity.

The way that they present feels so real--not in the sense of implying that other NB presentations are not real, but in the same way that Cash's asexuality feels so real, because it feels like a very specific person's super-detailed experience. Darren seems to identify with the gay male community, when the class has to divide by gender they pick "girl," they keep their birth name, they usually wear women's cut clothes. Their presentation is not "gender-neutral"--it's more like they don't fit in either box, so from a binary perspective they're bouncing from pole to pole.

When writing fic it's interesting to think about stuff like, what terms would Darren identify with, do they experience any type of dysphoria, did they ever consider changing their name to something feminine or gender-neutral, did they ever question if they are a trans woman, etc. but I kind of like that the show doesn't grind to a halt to address this. Ymmv.

amerie wadia is kind of the main character ever. so messy that she forced a group of students to get immediate remedial sexual literacy training. almost every other character has hated her at some point or another. accused of sleeping with her teacher. homewrecked an mlm couple by sleeping with both of them. takes her vibrator out in the middle of the courtyard right before a school trip. made a lifelong enemy at 8 years old. pregnant for weeks and just didn’t realize because she had other shit going on. i love her.
