i actually really like kagura,,, im proud of her for being so self aware?? she realized how selfish she was, and used that to grow as a person and i think thats really cool. she gets too much hate :(

To all the people who ask what is Kagura’s purpose in the Fruits Basket storyline:

I have read many comments on here about whether Kagura was an essential person in the series, and if she wasn’t a part of the series, would it matter.

The short answer is: yes, it would.

Many people have mixed feelings on Kagura as a character, and that is okay, but it is important to understand that she did have a purpose in the storyline. She was the first person who ‘accepted’ Kyo as a person. Before Kagura, Kyo stuck to himself, he was alone, often shunned by the other members of the Sohma clan. Kagura reached out to him, and the two of them became friends. In a way the both of them needed each other as Kagura’s mom wouldn’t let her talk to other children, and Kyo had a reputation even before he was actually born.

Yes, I understand that the reason Kagura played with Kyo was that she felt bad for him and ultimately wanted to be close to someone she felt was more pathetic than herself. However, I do genuinely think that Kagura needed Kyo. They were able to support each other. She helped him learn that there were people who would accept him and that he wasn’t going to be alone forever. Even though, he might not have realized it, then but he does when they have their heartbreaking conversation. The reason he thanked her was because of this. He thanked her because he realized she was the first real connection he had. That alone is important. She was there for Kyo when no one else was and ultimately set him up, so he was capable of opening up to others (Tohru).
