Kind of adds to thing I've been thinking: That Deceit is Thomas' inherent desires and priorities whereas Patton is more Thomas' learnt values, both from his personal experiences and, most distinctly different from Deceit, the values taught to him by society and his Catholic upbringing.

I love this!! Deceit is necessary because he ensures Thomas attends to his own needs, and with Thomas being such a loving person it is clear to see why Deceit is so adament about him not always putting other people’s wants over his own limits and boundaries. Patton is his antithesis because he is the voice that deals with man-made constructs instead of survival instincts. Patience now means bigger rewards later, comprimise means two people are happy over one- things like that. It’s almost like Deceit is the ‘Nature’ to Patton’s ‘Nurture’.

SANDERS SIDES PSA

I’ve seen so much Patton and Virgil hate recently because of the most recent episode and something I think some of y’all are forgetting is:

Thomas is the only multi-faceted character in the whole series.

Fair enough, it is a part of fandom culture to take the characters we love and develop them as individuals in fanfics and fanart, but sometimes I think we can get ahead of ourselves and forget the overall goal of the series, which is to examine problems many of us face internally by seperating Thomas’ psyche into easily distinguishable chunks and showing how they interact. Why is this important?

Patton questions ‘is Thomas a good person?’ a lot because he represents the values passed down to Thomas from his external upbringing, which was revealed to be rather black and white, because of religion and also it’s easier for a child to understand. Lying is bad. Friendship is good. Maybe thats why Pat flicks fast between a patental and child-like figure; he’s a figment of socially embedded expectations.

Anxiety is a shortcut that skips your brain when sending nerve impulses to get a quicker response. It cares more about the lifesaving solution than the logistical cause of danger, so ofcourse Verge sways from ‘Some thoughts are meaningless’ (Repression) to ‘There is definitely something wrong with him’ (catastrophic/hypochondriac thinking) after a quick word from Remus. He is a survive first, think later reflex.

Logan was the hero if this episode because psychologically speaking he is the side most capable of self-awareness. If Virgil is the primal survival instincts, Logic is the BiG mAn GaLaXy BrAiN of the modern era. He has the capability to see things from an objective standpoint, uninfluenced by a survival mode or moral codes. It’s no wonder he could see Remus as the harmless trash rat he is.

In conclusion, we aren’t meant to be judging the characters for their responses to a situation. We are supposed to be understanding why they react that way and how it affects Thomas so that he (and we) can understand how to work through those issues constructively. Virgil said it himself:

Denying a side their purpose takes away that whole premise. It’s Patton’s job to be fussy over doing what’s right to keep up a value system and it’s Virgil’s job to raise any faults so that they can be fixed. It’s okay to admit that they go too far sometimes and we can still love them regardless of that. If you didnt like something a character did or said it is most likely written that way and will be a problem brought to balance by the other side’s strengths as part of the message. Okay? okay.
