It had been a while since she had seen him. And no, of course she wasn’t worried. Why would she be? He was a capable guy. A capable asshole.. But capable, nonetheless. She crossed her arms, staring at the door before her. All she had to do was knock… ‘Just reach your hand out…’ Her eyes narrowed at the door before her, and then she turned around.
This situation was more complicated than Yoko wanted to admit. She slowly looked behind herself again at the door. This internal struggle, battling her own emotions, was driving her up a goddamn tree. The redhead let out a sigh. ‘So maybe I do miss him.’ She had to, right..? Why else would she be here. Their last meeting had felt a bit odd and she hadn’t seen him since… Maybe she was sad about that.
Yoko had never been good with these sorts of things. She couldn’t put herself out there and really admit how she felt. No, no. That wasn’t her style. Not that she felt any specific way, of course. She faced the door again, this time determined. “All I have to do is knock…” She whispered to herself, extending a fist forward to tap the door. She knocked a few times before feeling her body get cold. Was it too late to run away..? Why did she feel so nervous in the first place?
“This guy is an idiot…”
She quietly grumbled to herself, beginning to tap her foot against the ground. She felt impatient, and hoped this jerk wouldn’t keep her waiting long.
It had been a while since he’d done... well... anything. Ever since the whole fiasco where he’d been forced to be somebody he wasn’t... he hadn’t really been around much. He’d spent most of his days inside, getting drunk or something along those lines. He hadn’t even really spoken to anyone, least of all her or even Ari. For once he’d decided to clear his head and go get some groceries or something. By groceries, it of course was a bag full of booze and junk food.
And what did his eyes see when he rounded the corner upon coming back from his little errand? A certain red head. Raising a brow curiously, he watched her fidget and squirm, listening to her mutter to herself with a light scowl. He wasn’t sure if she’d knocked yet or not, but he stepped forward silently until he was right behind her.
“Usually helps if someone’s home.” He said, placing a hand on her shoulder and moving past her to open the door. Dante held the door open, turning his head to look at her with eyes playfully narrowed. “And uh... I’m not the idiot.”
As soon as she walked in, he closed the door, tossing the bags he was carrying in one hand onto the counter and turning around to lean against said counter. “So, what’d you need, Red? Were you missing me? I bet you were. Not a call or text in weeks, must’ve left you wanting.”
He anticipates the shot; with the grace of a seasoned warrior, he unsheathes his blade and skillfully deflects the shot with a powerful diagonal swing. Though in the back of his mind, behind the proud facade, he feels painfully naked with only half of his weapon and three uses of his aura as a shield. “ For a man who’s not human, you’re awfully passionate about defending their sins, ” the faunus continues regardless of this internal reservation, “ And for someone who’s trapped in here like the rest of us at the hands of some humans playing god, you would think you’d be a little more open to my honest words. ”
He sheathes his blade, steel scraping against the material as he pushes it down. Though the tension in his shoulders makes it clear he is ready to unsheathe it at a moment’s notice. “ I’m not here to fight. ” His words are ever-calm, almost arrogantly so. Yet there is a degree of truth to what he says – partially due to the uneasy knowledge that he has been rendered painfully vulnerable by these damnable scientists, and partially due to the fact that this man before him is apparently not as human as he’d initially suspected. “ Nor am I here to talk down to anyone. I’m only here to speak the truth. ”
Honestly, he should have figured that a guy who didn’t flinch at his guns would be able to deflect bullets. He flips both of his guns around his fingers before shoving them into the holsters at his sides. “Only because I’ve seen what those sins become.” He muttered darkly, eyes narrowing slightly. A bright flash emerges from behind him, the symbol on his back lighting up even through his jacket and a large sword, Rebellion, appears slung across his back. “You think I don’t know how shitty humans can be?! Until not too long ago, I thought I was one of ‘em. Believe me, asshole. I know and compared to what I’m used to fighting? They’re nothin’.”
Dante stepped forward, shoving a finger against the other’s chest and narrowing his eyes at the mask. “You hide behind a fucking mask and preach about humanity being shitty. What makes you better than them? You say you’re not here to fight but you come around, talking shit and expect nobody to try to pick a fight with you? Don’t bullshit me, man. If I’ve learned anything since I got here, it’s that all this is probably the work of the assholes that brought us here. It’s not divine retribution, it’s not some punishment from our sins.”
“You’re not looking for a fight? Fine.” He takes a few steps back, hands out in front of him. Though he reaches up, gripping the hilt of Rebellion and spinning the massive sword about within his grasp, allowing the tip to hit the ground with a Clang and a small shower of sparks. “I’ve been lookin’ for a good fight since I got here. And I haven’t had any demons to take my anger out on. Let your sword do the talking unless you’re a little bitch who’s all talk.”
“Not even a little bit,” she grumbles as she’s righted, taking hold of his shoulder a moment until she can manage a couple of deep breaths to keep her knees from buckling. The further she gets from the fire, the better, and the way she keeps looking at it from the corners of her eyes makes that obvious.
“Why ain’t I surprised that’s prob’ly th’ line’a thinkin’? Disgraceful.” Fingers tighten on his shoulder, brief and tense (she doesn’t just mean the fire or the reasons that might lie behind it), but then lets go, arms immediately moving around herself, shoulders hunching. “I’m in th’ next sector over, so here’s hopin’ that ain’t on fire too.”
He allows her to get her bearings without a word, eyes watching her carefully to make sure she doesn’t collapse or something. He could tell that she wasn’t in the mood for jokes or games and, honestly, this wasn’t the time for it, anyway. He ran his fingers through his short black hair, scratching at his scalp lightly.
“Hey, c’mon. I’ll walk you home. Make sure nothing happens. It’s not the best time to be walking alone, anyway.”
He gave her upper arm a soft, reassuring pat. It wasn’t often that he expressed such kindness and, honestly, he doubted she’d see him in the same light when this was all over and he was acting like himself instead. But it was a time of crisis that, honestly, reminded him of when demons attacked. So naturally, he was going to adopt a more serious attitude. “If it is on fire, we’ll figure somethin’ out.”
The ginger watches the other with an air of indifference. With the sheath of his blade clutched firmly in one hand, Adam stares down the stranger as he coolly replies, “ Would you really waste your time? ” Unmoving, unflinching, the faunus continues, “ This city is in ruins, yet here you are… threatening a man whose only crime is saying something you don’t agree with. Yet I can’t say I’m surprised. ”
“I think you underestimate how much time I have on my hands.” And thus, a loud bang fills the air between them as he takes a quick shot at the other’s legs, mostly aiming for the knee but not really aiming. “Besides, you’re saying something that’s insulting to humanity. Not that I give much of a shit, I ain’t exactly human. But you’re just an asshole standing around, talking about how it’s humanity’s doing that this is happening.”
“And nothin’ pisses me off more than some jackass just sitting on a soapbox, talking down to everyone around them.”
Despite not being in the best state of mind as she jumps, she at least has the sense not to drop straight at him like she’s jumping out into water. A solid hit against his chest, one arm awkwardly hooked over his shoulder, the other pressing a hand against his chest.
“…why is it always fuckin’ fire with this place!?” Mostly rhetorical, an indignant exclamation as she wriggles in his grip, still tense at the proximity to flame. “…thanks though. ‘Preciate it.”
“Sure. You alright?” His question comes with him letting her go so she can walk on her own. He wasn’t too concerned with the flames, but it was pretty obvious that she was. Sucked about the shop, though. Sector Six was his home, so he did know pretty well what she was talking about.
“Your guess is as good as mine. I guess people just assume there are trees here so it’s easy to start a big fire. Wouldn’t be my first pick but, then again, I live here.”
“Are you fuckin’ crazy–!?”
–okay, so that was definitely the sound of the art history section collapsing, never mind. “…fuck it, head’s up!” And out she goes.
“You have no idea.” He muttered under his breath. And he shifted his body a bit, trying to get directly under her and getting ready to catch her when she made it down to him. Even if it meant falling on his ass. He could take a few falls on his ass if it came down to it.
“Aaaand, gotcha!”
“…I knew workin’ at a bookstore inside a big-ass tree was gonna come back an’ bite me.” Worse than that, there is fire everywhere and she’s too terrified to do anything about it.
“Holy shit. There’s actually someone up there.” He places his hands on his hips, tilting his head as though to try and get a better view. She looked... familiar, almost. “Huh...Hey, you!” He held out his arms, “Jump and I’ll catch you!”
“ Do you really think your thoughts matter to me in the slightest? ” He turns on his heel to face the other. “ You’ll be the one crawling to me for aid when the White Fang rises above the ashes left behind by this scathing fire. ”
“Huh. Interesting. ‘cause I don’t crawl to anyone. Least of all an unimportant little shit stain like you. In fact, how about I make it so you’re the one that has to do the crawling?” Suddenly, his guns were in his hands, coat flapping backward as he yanked the firearms from his holsters. “I’ve got one for each knee. What a fuckin’ coincidence.”
A black silhouette, framed by fire, watches the city burn with utmost calm. “ Are you afraid now? ” he says, surprisingly unafraid in spite of the destruction. The smallest of smiles plays across his lips, and he turns to the person unfortunate enough to have been caught in this mess at the same time as Adam. “ This is punishment for all of humanity’s crimes. ”
“Yeah. ‘cause natural disasters aren’t a thing. Humanity’s absolutely a piece of shit, but people who go around spouting shit like that aren’t any better. So, I’m gonna go ahead and lump you in with the rest of the assholes.” Some assholes, holy shit.
“Holy fuck!”
“You assholes are actually doing something for once.”
“Who the FUCK is wasting lube?!”
“Wha…what?! Don’t do that! That’s awful – and…barbaric!”
“I wasn’t serious. But now I’m kinda considering it.”
“Holy fuck, I feel great. I just wanna get drunk and destroy something beautiful. Where’s the nearest china shop?”

And as the brand on his back begins to glow, an unfamiliar feeling of magic sears into his back like something he hadn’t felt in a very long time. Bursting forth from the brand comes a sword that’s all too familiar. With a relieved sigh, his hand reaches back, catching the hilt of the large sword and bringing it around with a few twirls.
“Fuck... I’d gotten so used to that wooden piece of shit that I almost forgot what you felt like, baby...” He held the sword out before him in one hand, running his fingers lovingly down the flat of the blade. “Looks like the band’s back together again.”
“You don’t have to act that way just to get your point across. I understand that you’re angry about it. You have a right to be. And it’s good that you stepped in when you did so others wouldn’t be injured. But we step in when we’re needed, too. Can we stop every little thing that comes around? No. We can’t be everywhere at once, as much as we want to be. All of us want to do what’s right and protect people, and we help when we can, but we’re not perfect. We never claimed to be. But we are out there fighting. Just because all you hear is talk doesn’t mean we’re not doing our job.”
“So you can take your bad attitude and shove it!”
“I do have to act this way ‘cause if I act like some whiny, concerned citizen, you won’t fucking listen. Nobody in ‘law enforcement’ does until something bad happens.” He pulled out his gun, giving it a quick spin around his finger before pointing it at a building, tilting his head to look at her. “You think you could stop me if I just started shooting the shit out of windows? I don’t have a lot of my shit still, but I’ve got enough to think I could take you and anyone else in your squad.”
“Go ahead. Try to stop me.” He wasn’t going to hurt anyone. Just aim for the windows. If she could actually make him stop, it might save some money for these poor souls. His finger pulled the trigger, letting a bullet fly with an eardrum rendering bang, the sound of shattering glass following quickly after. “Catch me if you can, bunny rabbit.” And he twisted his form around and started to bolt away from the woman, occasionally swinging his wooden sword into windows to break them out.

“We try… The one that I’m part of is still going. Maybe we haven’t gotten a lot of notice for what we do, but we haven’t given up at all. You might not be able to see it, but that doesn’t mean we’re just talking about doing things.”
“It’s a damn shame that all I hear about is talk. How’re these people supposed to feel like they can walk home without getting their goddamn necks snapped by some psycho on the way home if you don’t actually make your presence known? If you’re not out there in the street looking for it? Everyone in this city can talk as much as they want but none of that bullshit matters until something is done. Talk is cheap, as they say. I don’t hear people talkin’ about how someone was wreaking havoc and were stopped by someone. I don’t hear newspaper headlines reading “That Little Shithead Was Stopped By The So-and-so’s!”
“Don’t come t’me looking to defend yourself or anyone else who spouts on about this justice bullshit when all I’ve seen any of ‘em do is sit on their asses and talk. Talk. Talk. If you recall, I’m one of the ones who had to get off my drunk ass and do something about that little twerp who was running around frying people a few months back. Too bad he killed like eight people before I got to him. But hey.”
