She finds it to be the one calming thing after…
Well, after time stopped and then accelerated by some immeasurable speed, then regulated itself back to a steady tick.
She found peace in the way it would start, slow or all at once, the unpredictability comforting in the chaos that surrounded her. She felt like she could relate to it in a way, the brewing elements in the clouds, gathering themselves together to either let loose or to drip, drop by drop onto the earth depending on the mood. Her emotions were regulated in a similar fashion - either letting go completely, in what she referred to as weakness, or presenting themselves gradually on her face and in her mannerisms, slowly and tediously displaying how much she was truly hurting.
She even sometimes imagined she was there beside her - watching the droplets fall. In those moments, she let her own tears fall, much like the rain.
He didn’t pay too much attention to the weather - too consumed with other priorities like what to have for breakfast or what game he was going to…
That is until it happened - what he later referred to as the accident- what at the time everyone referred to as the incident- what he as a young child just referred to as what the heck was going on.
It was raining that day. That detail was seared into his memory, never to be over ridden by some other aspect, but to be thought of almost in conjunction with - the accident.
He didn’t particularly like the rain.
It was storming - Ace knows this because he got that eerie feeling across his skin as he always had done since he was a child.
That and Nancy was acting very sporadic- forgetting customers orders and nearly tripping when entering the kitchen.
So he gathered some bravery (from where he wasn’t sure) and asked politely what was wrong
When she dismissed him in the locker room he gathered additional courage and asserted, “I know something is bothering you.”
And perhaps it was the rain outside pelting on the tin roof of the restaurant, perhaps it was how she looked at him like the rain itself - fierce and chaotic and gentle and piercing.
“You can tell me anything, you know that right?”
And she dipped her head and let those blue eyes land on his features again, replying, “if I say these words, I can’t take them back.”
It was raining that day. That detail was seared into his memory.
He had grown a fondness for the rain.
