You can pull more love, patience, and forgiveness out of yourself than you ever thought possible and pour it into an empty man, but he will never be full. He will still choose self destruction over you at every turn. He will feed off your grace and weaponize your sympathy, this is how he survives. This is how he keeps you close. He is headed down that bottomless pit inside himself and he will take you with him. And once you are depleted, once you are as empty as he is, once looking at you starts to feel too much like looking into a mirror, he will tell you that you were always the one who was defective
