If you have half a day to spare while in Shanghai, take a day trip out to Zhujiajiao in the Qingpu district. This ancient water town is only an hour away from the city. For more than 1700 years, this town, fed by the Dianshan Lake, is made up of water canals. Boats and canoes are the main form of transportation. It’s just like Venice but in China.
As you paddle around the city, you will notice the ancient buildings lining the riverbanks. The village prospers through rice shops, banks, and spice stores. I stopped by one of the many seafood restaurants and tried their specialty: sea snail. Any one know how to eat these? Hint: you don’t suck them out. Clothing and souvenir shops line their main street, North Street. You will see many bridge crossings connecting the town but the most famous bridge is the Fangsheng Bridge. Built in 1571, this bridge is the longest, largest and tallest stone bridge in Shanghai. After wandering around the town, I ended the trip at Yuanjin Buddhist Temple.

If you’re curious to know where to find the monstrous xiao long bao (xlb), go to Nanxiang Mantou Dian (aka Nanxiang Steamed Bun). It’s on the way to Yuyuan Garden. This restaurant has several levels. Yu Garden or aka Yuyuan Garden was built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yudan. He wanted a tranquil and happy place for his parents. However, the expense of building this place ruined the Pans. This Chinese garden currently spans over five acres of Shanghai. It previously suffered damage during the Opium War but has since been restored in 1956. It was declared a national monument in 1982.
The ancient Chinese architecture is still preserved in these buildings.
From the verdana, you can see the Exquisite Jade Rock. This 5-ton porous rock is known for the way water flows out of its holes. The bridge to the Pavilion of Listening Billows is built to represent a dragon’s back. Within the garden is its own theater.
The one feature I loved from this garden, was the Dragon’s wall, curved just like a dragon’s back.
After exploring this ancient Chinese garden, stop by Nanxiang Mantou Dian for some xiao long bao.

After a wonderful dinner at Scarpetta, I headed next door to Coquille for dessert. This quaint French seafood bistro looks like it belongs in Paris. When you look at the Shanghai skyline towards the Pudong District, along the Huangpu River, you will notice a tower dotted with spheres. That spherical tower is the Oriental Pearl Tower. This TV tower was the tallest building in China from 1994 until 2007, when the Shanghai World Financial Center was built. There are three sightseeing spheres. At 295 feet is Space City while the Sightseeing Floor is at 863 feet.
For the brave, there is a glass-bottom observation deck for tourist to walk on and observe the city below their feet. In between the two levels, there are a revolving restaurant and hotel. At 1148 feet is the highest observatory level named Space Module. It offers a bird’s eye view of the city along the Bund. Tip: Go on a clear day to avoid the smog and try to go during the golden hour to watch the sunset.
